Knicks · Ntilinkina vs Smith vs Monk (page 2)

I'll take Ntilikina over both these iso players.
You need to watch them play instead of watching "highlight" videos to understand why some people are high on these players.
I'm not a big fan of either of them (Monk or Smith) but when those two are "on", especially Smith Jr., you can see why fans would get excited but you in order to see that you have had to watch them play in a real game.

The Russell Westbrook comparison is overblown lol There's only one Wes...Fultz and Smith are good athletes, but not at that level.

Kid has good IQ and looks like he has more command on the pick and roll. The defense is impressive too. This kid is the best system fit of the three.

I'm sure he'll put up numbers in the NBA but will he help elevate his team? This is going to be a difficult pick for the Knicks and they are going to catch heat no matter who they select. I have to admit that I'm also a little tainted by the KP pick a couple of years ago. I remember Stephen A. Smith groaning about how the Knicks should've selected all of these well known guys (Cauley-Stein, Winslow, Stanley Johnson, etc.) and the unknown foreign player we selected was clearly the right choice.
I am trying to resist the urge to hope the Knicks drip into the foreign waters again because KP worked out well for us. But I'm just not having good vibes about Smith and my gut is telling me Ntilikina is the pick (though i know nothing about him).

The thing with Nitty is he's not super fast or explosive but his success isn't predicated on those things. He can play ball. High IQ, good defender, skilled, Unselfish, good size and length! Not likely to be a superstar or highlight king. Should help his team WIN.

“He’s a killer,’’ former Knicks European scout Tim Shea told The Post. “Definitely a lottery pick, top seven. Right now he’s a backup, but he can get out there and he’d be great for Kristaps [Porzingis]. He’d be happy to see him, too.’’
Smith was hardly a media darling on Tobacco Road and stopped talking to the press between games and sometimes after games.

So I need to watch Smith play in a real game, but people picking Ntilikina lose credibility based on the highlight reel. Got it, glad we clears this one up.
Where in my post did I indicate, I never saw them play in a game? I watched Smith play Duke twice, yeah he can score, he is shoot first forget about setting up the offense type PG.

I hate making an opinion just off of highlight videos (and Ntilikina's videos are less than impressive, IMO)...I like to watch the players play against worthy opponents and in meaningful games so, when it comes to European players, I will admit, I am a bit biased.
I hope this is not the guy we pick, but if it is, I hope it works out. DRAFT is a crap shoot.

I think you have to take in account Smith's situation. He is playing with a bunch of backups. He probably felt he needed to be that type of "offense first" type of player. If he was playing with much better talent he may be setting up more , deferring more type of player.

you also have to consider what he accomplished in that situation, which was: the big squadoosh

All nice traits, but you can say the same for Rubio, and Minny is still spinning their wheels even with a franchise center.
We need a needle mover.

The thing I noticed about the French kid is that it looks like he's learning to use his size and length to keep create space and keep defenders on his hip. He also uses floaters and the backboard to get his shot off. He's not a burner, but he plays at a comfortable place. I also like his decision maker off the pick and roll. He won't be dominant offensively but he'll be solid. The defensive potential gets me excited. He uses those long arms to get deflections, cover ground and be disruptive. Defense is #1 priority for me in this draft and I like Frank's two way potential at both guard spots. I warming up to DSJ, but I have concerns about his ability to play system ball and his dedication to defense. Monk is too one dimensional for me. It's a dimension we need, but I feel we can get outside shooting elsewhere.

+1
All of Smith's assists in his strengths video were him driving hard and winging the ball back to the three point line. Looked JUST like Rose. Definitely a skilled player and top tier athlete, but not what we're looking for or need.
Monk will be a good player in the league I'm sure, but I'm not crazy about a streaky shooting 1 way player with our lottery pick in this draft.
Frank has the most upside and two way skillset. Also he's been playing pro ball for a few years now. Don't be fooled by the videos. Just because the opponents were smaller than him doesn't mean they are scrubs. The U18 euro tournament is all professional basketball players, not HS kids.
