Knicks · The case for Lauri Markkanen (page 1)
I feel like nobody is talking about the kid. He's compared to Ryan Anderson and Nikola Mirotic on nbadraft.net.... that would be a fantastic pick if he were to be as good as those players... but Lauri isn't 6'10"... He's 7 foot!
I know we need a point guard... but I feel we could grab a nice prospect later on in the draft. At #8 if Lauri Markkanen is there, how do we pass up on the guy? The Knicks aren't so good where they have to draft a point guard or bust at #8. I could see the Kings or Orlando drafting Smith. Monk could make a jump as well. It's all wide open to me. I can't see Minnesota passing on Lauri Markkanen unless Isaac was there. How do we pass up on him at #8?
I guess we have to find a white player to compare him to besides Dirk. What about Tom Guggliotta???? He as "only" 6-10 but avged 20.6 pts and 8.7 Rebs in his lone allstar year at age 27.
Had some healthy issues in his 13 year career. "Googs" might be my new go to honky compare guy now. Everyone is into "Dirk", so passe'.
Drafted 6th in 1992 and was 1st team all rookie. Made $82,000,000 in his career.
Or we can compare him to Gallinari? Got that Italian thing. Oh shyt, What about Bargnani then? Tall white good shooter, but more Euro while still Italian.
Maybe we go Channing Frye but with a better handle?
Nalod wrote:We have talked about him and he is rising. I hope he gets taken earlier. The kid is fluid and can shoot. If Minny thinks Wiggins is the SF of the future, this kid might be a better PF than Issac (Has smallhands, no joke) and in todays game a 7 footer playing two on two with Towns would be awesome.

Really, Look at the threads and comparisons. Im making fun of all of us in a light hearted way. nothing vicious or derogatory.
Find me one comparison of KP to anyone other than another white guy? Other than me who used Ralph Sampson.
In fact usually we compare the white Euro's to other White euro's too! Its funny as hell.

It has to do with skillset more than race. Ralph Sampson is a pretty good comparison to KP. I cant think of anyone else he would compare to. He doesn't even play like Dirk. Lauri if anything plays alot like Dirk. Not many Black players that are 7' perimeter players that had any sucess in the nba.

You could also go with Detlef for the tall white guy who can shoot comparison? Joking aside, I think Dirk is probably best case with Troy Murphy or Terry Mills as a floor.

See also Frye, arenas, Jefferson, Bibby, terry, Dickerson, iguadola... etc. They do better than a lot of college programs.

You can add Duke to that list.

Channing Frye.
Channing Frye is a bum.

Frye =huge disappointment
arenas= very good
Jefferson=good
terry=good
Dickerson= who the f is he???
Iguadola=good
Could utilize a 3 man rotation of KP/Markkanen/Willy. Willy is already comfortable coming off the bench.
Eventually, a trade if need be.
But I'm not sure that Lauri will be BPA at 8.

instead of digging waaaaaaaaaaaay back, how about we look at first round picks from Arizona AFTER Frye got drafted:
2008 - Jerryd Bayless
2009 - Jordan Hill
2011 - Derrick Williams
2013 - Solomon Hill
2014 - Aaron Gordon
2015 - Stanley Johnson
2015 - Rondae Hollis-Jefferson
the only thing notable from this list is a runner-up finish at the dunk contest

Too early to tell with Johnson, Gordon and Jefferson. Bayless, hill and Williams have been disappoints, but you have guys like Budinger and McConnell who have been great values. They're not as bad as Indiana or Duke. They're solid. Throw in the fact that most of the guys you mentioned were one and done, im not that worried about Arizona's player development.

so you're saying the best recent players were drafted in the second round or undrafted. I suppose that would be relevant, if we weren't talking about what to do with the #8 pick
I feel similarly about Duke and Indiana but this isn't a thread about a player from Duke or Indiana.
As for the one-and-done thing, that's not me cherry picking. That's a list of EVERY first round pick from UA since Channing Frye.
Lastly, Lauri might prove to be a great player--but again--Arizona has had its fair share of DISAPPOINTING FIRST ROUND PICKS

I'm saying it's reach to say Arizona can't produce NBA players. They have and will continue to do so. And really is Aaron Gordon a bust? Jefferson looks to be solid considering where he was picked. Stanley had a disappointing second season, but it's not out of the realm of possibility he'll bounce back. I wouldn't let any perceived Arizona "curse" stop me from drafting Lauri. Let Willy, Kyle, Lance battle for minutes. Talent usually wins out in these instances.

Why are they disappointment, not everyone is going is built to be a super star or even an all star, the roles players are just as important. Most drafts only produce 3 maybe 4 all stars.
