After the current finals I'd suggest the following trade between the Knicks and the Cavs.
Cavs receive: Melo
Knicks receive: Iman Shumpert, Channing Frye, Richard Jefferson, The Cavs 2020 1rst round pick and the right to swap 1rst round picks in 2021 (both unprotected)
If Melo drops his no trade clause the trade works under the CBA.
Why it works for the Cavs: They don't give up much (now) and with Melo they get another scoring option from the bench. Lebron can get more rest and their bench will be far more competitive.
Why it works for the Knicks: Shumpert might be a keeper but the real deal are the first rounders in 2020 and 2021 (swap). At that time the Cavs will probably be a lottery team. Lebron will be 35/36 and will probably either play for another team or retire until then. The Cavs will be quite saturated and really don't have many options to improve their team until then.
Why it works for Melo: He has a chance to get to the finals and maybe even win a ring. Additionally he could work with his friend Lebron.
I know that this will take patience for the Knicks. A thing that they normally don't have. But this may pan out as a Boston - Nets scenario. Getting unexpectedly high draft picks while hopefully being a playoff team. To sweeten the deal for the Knicks some 2nd round picks or even the 2012 first rounder could also be included.
do we really want shumpert back plus frye and jefferson? i think not
How about we give the Cavs a similiar package for LeBron... then sign cp3 and Wade after we salary dump our whole roster?

lmao!!!!
It's funny but didn't Miami do the same thing? The Knicks could literally trade Noah, Courtney Lee, and kristaps for LeBron James. You can sprinkle some draft picks in there If you want to. After that the Knicks can start salary dumping players and then with all the extra cap space they can sign CP3 and Wade. CP3 at the moment is going to Warrant a larger contract than Wade so they can split whatever remaining salary that they have between them. They could do it 60/40. That would get the Knicks Melo, LeBron, CP3, Wade and whoever else they can stick on this roster. It could be old veteran-minimum guys. You can pick up some undrafted guys. We might still have our number 8th pick so it's a lot of options here in this scenario. It's farfetch as all hell but it's also not impossible to do.... and force Phil to coach how about that?

Oh i definitely agree, that's why I keep saying it doesn't take building through the draft to build a championship roster.. All it takes it smart trading, and FA commitments..
But phil and Mills wont get FA players like that to commit to the triangle, they will say they're cool with it, but a month in, the resistance will be in full motion.
We keep signing the wrong FA's or we get half of what we need, like a great penetrating guard like rose, but he doesn't play much D, shoot 3's or pass much. Or trading for melo, then not bringing the kind of PG that can manage his touches like kidd did, and he still put up 28 ppg for a scoring title.
I like your thinking. Let me add to your already brilliant post and make it sparkle that much more. I was thinking this: Once we are able to trade Jefferson, we can trade Jefferson and MAYBE, and I mean MAYYYBE a future second round pick (like perhaps the 2032 second round pick) to Milwaukee for Giannis Antetokounmpo and a first round pick!!
NBA champs in 2018!!!!
If we could drag in a few more teams into the trade and also get:
Mozgov
DLee
Crawford
Toney Douglas
Gallonari
Wilson Chandler
and the rights to Chris Smith's Israeli contract!
All the sins of the past would be forgiven! Praise Phil!
