talk about a dude flip flopping

The 2017 NBA Finals were arguably the most exciting display of basketball fans have seen in a while — if ever. The league can attribute this compelling display of skill to one simple thing: super teams. And according to NBA commissioner Adam Silver, that's exactly what the association needs.

Last summer, when questioned about the Warriors addition of Durant, Silver was strongly against it. In a press conference at the 2016 Las Vegas Summer League, he said, "I don't think to have two super teams is good for the league."

When asked about it this month, he flip-flopped.

Before Game 4 of the NBA Finals, Silver told the Washington Post Wednesday that the league should look to form more teams that can make a solid run deep into the playoffs.

"[A]n incredible free agent was added to that squad," he said. "All the focus seems to be on, 'They’re too good' as opposed to, 'What is it we should be doing to create more great teams in this league?'"

He added, "Rather than talking about how to break up or knock down a championship-caliber team, my focus should be on how we do a better job developing more great players in this league."

Kevin Durant and the Golden State Warriors won an NBA title Monday and did so in spectacular fashion. With the addition of the superstar forward, the Warriors became even more of a threat since last year when they won a record-breaking 73 games. They did so by cultivating talent through the NBA draft and picking players like Stephen Curry in 2009 and Klay Thompson in 2011.

Silver’s stance on super teams changed, and rightfully so as the NBA is thriving. According to research from Guggenheim Securities, viewership was up 400 percent thanks to the Warriors — greater numbers than the pre-finals audience. Like Silver, the number of views also suggest that super teams are good for the league.

"My answer is, let’s create more great teams, rather than completely focus on one incredible team and whether that’s seemingly unfair to the other team. I think it’s the nature of competition. Ultimately, it’s about raising the bar for all the teams in this league and celebrating excellence," Silver said.

However, the league may be trying to suppress the number of super teams that exist. The NBA Players Association and the NBA itself authorized changes to the CBA agreement last December. These changes are designed to inhibit stars from teaming up, which went into effect this year. Teams can give players more money under the salary cap. The new agreement also allows them to consult with their home-based players quicker, making it easier to re-sign talent they already have.

“Of course, over time, we’ll continue to look at the CBA,” he said. “And if there are additional changes we need to make to promote competitive balance, we will.”

Basically if you don't have a super team, your TOAST.

super teams are guys that are willing to sacrifice money for a 90% chance of winning a championship. Given the home team 40 or 50 extra million to retain their players is a joke. Your advocating money over winning(especially if the home team is not a contender by far) and what kind of message is that.

It isn't just the talent with the GSW, the system is tailor made for the players, and they know it like the back of there hands, an avg coach at this point can guide that team to the finals.

money is secondary to most prime time stars, or guys who want to win

Knicks should send noah and Thomas to a team for a 2nd rounders, trade lee, then sign labron and paul..

I understand it was just sarcasm, but I would love to meet the GM who would give you a second rounder for Noah. Or a sixth rounder. Or a sack of three day old sheehit.

That contract is going to be the conversation-ender for Phil for the rest of his life.

"Hey Zen Master, how did it feel to pay 72 million for Chris Dudley's free throw shooting protege?"
"Yeah, well..."
"I bet Noah couldn't hit Shaq's azz with a ball from 30 feet"

Yeah exactly. We have nothing to attract top FAs even if we could clear the space.
I don't mind if Silver changed his mind. He's human. GSW is the most exciting team I can remember in a long time and I'd love to see more super teams.

That's true reason thet upped the salary cap. So teams could pry away superstars and be able to afford them... not signing bums because that's the what the market suggests... everyone doesn't deserve the max. So teams like Portland max out their roster and can't get better cuz thet signed 4 guys way more than thet should have. You can goo around the league the last few summers. Guys getting 17-20 plus mill when they only really deserve half of that if that. If teams saved the money they could make teams that superstars would want to go to.

Worthy could have been a franchise player on another team.

Bob Mcadoo was Melo before Melo... he was coming of the bench for this team. Just silly

Supper-team starts with great organization with consistent strategic vision and personal capable to select, grow, and improve talent.
Then comes a great coach or succession of coaches tailored for the specific state of team development.
Then comes the players with desire to win, respect to the game, each other, and fans.
Then come success, and dynasties are emerging, and superstars became superstars.
For some reason majority of fans think that you can put a couple of supper-talents together and here you go - you have a good team.
Delusional bunch.

That was a pretty nice team. To bad everyone got hurt right before the finals

HofstraBBall @ 6/17/2017 7:05 PM
Silver is not exactly crying after the viewing numbers the series produced from a Cleveland vs Golden State final. That's all they care about.
Jmpasq @ 6/18/2017 9:06 AM
Id give up a protected first to get rid of Noah thats how bad that contract is, Because of that contract the Knicks need to go the 76ers route the next 3 years,
Only longterm deals are rookie deals, tank, maintain cap flexibility for the same year when Noahs contract expires ,hope a couple draft picks turn into stars. That allows us to take on bad contracts the next 3 years for assets. It sucks but there is no other way
