Buying him out now would make no sense. They wait one more year then they can buy him out within the last year of his contract. In the meantime hang on to him and see what deals can formulate until then.
Billups is supposedly going to become GM of the Cavs. Billuos twice proclaimed that Cavs need to trade Love for Melo.

I agree. But the guy that is running things doesn't do things that make sense.
So we're going to pay him $20 or 25 mil a year to play somewhere else? That's ridiculous. That would make Melo's contract worse than Houston's, Amare's, or anyone else's. At least, we paid them to play for us!

I agree with you I would wait it out. Put Melo on the bench and see what comes about. I don't think Billups gets that job.

if it's impossible to get any form of cap relief from the buyout then "Mr. Melo meet Mr. Pine; you can get off of it when you play defense and pass"
If he wanted to buy him out then he would have pushed harder to trade him at the deadline. Even if for scraps with short deals and 2 draft picks from the Clippers.

Buyout is what Melo wants. Steven A reiterated what Melo wants. Not necessarily what Phil wants. This to me is all about what Melo, Paul and LeBron possibly want.

He meaning Phil? Shorter deals and pics? You make it sound like that would have been easy but I think it would have been virtually impossible to do.

Suppose it's melo's camp coming to phil with the buy out, and not the other way around.

Yea Phil. Wasnt there framework for a deal with the Clippers? Rivers, Crawford, Wesley Johnson.
I would not buy him out. Do not pay him to play elsewhere.
Bench him. He will want to leave as he wastes away on the bench.

Oh I thought you meant contracts shorter than Melo's when you said short deals. If we're not actually saving money, then yeah I could see us getting 2nd round picks or maybe a late 1st round pick.

Yea you wont be able to completely shave the whole contract. But Crawford has a team option his final yr. Which would save 14 mil. Rivers and Johnson have player options the same yr. If either of them opt out would be more savings.
Melo is going to give up his chair during timeouts to D-Leaguers and handing out towels - I heard it from sauces.

Yeah you're right about Rivers. Hoopshype doesn't have any team or player options listed for Crawford or Johnson but the site might be wrong.
Here's my 2 cents. Phil is trying to build a culture of team ball. Porzingis adolescent tantrum was generated in part by Melo. Dolan can pay off Melo and Phil says good riddance. KP has to understand that this just business and
Not dealing with the boss Ain't cool and neither were his brothers comments to management... "despite how management treats its players"...
Thus rather than let a 21 year old dictate, get your picks and either KP wakes up or he and Melo can pack and we will get plenty for KP and upgrade our # 8. Fox and Tatum sound good along with Billy. I like KP a lot but you don't push your boss around in the press and he's been disrespectful to the franchise.

This franchise deserves disrespect

Ive seen more adolescent behavior from mgmt this season than from the 21 year old.
Everyone, take a deep breath Fill your lungs with knowledge, then breath out intelligence......
Ok, a buy out is not usually for a full price. We owe himi 56million. What is free agent Melo worth? What was DWade paid last year? He got 42mil over two years.
Knicks position might be that. Melo is younger and a better player at the moment.
So.........
$56,000,000
- $42,000,000
==============
$14,000.000
Divided by stretch provision 5 years.....
$2,800,000 a year. Exhale. See, is that so bad? Oh, but some of you say "Melo wants his money...!!!!" Yes, Clippers pay the difference.
Is melo worth 15mil a year? JR smith money? $18mil a year? Yep. So lets say its somewhere we'd stretch between $14-$20mil. Thats 4mil a year.
Now certainly most of you very intelligent knick fans knew how all this works right? I mean, before you string up Phil in a mob induced stupidity feed frenzy, you must realize that negotiating a buy out is just that.
If we waive him, that's a different story and we could get stuck in that scenario.
Melo's agent is to figure out what teams will pay him, then go back to knicks and work with them. Knicks can set the value. Knicks can say he is welcome back to play 25 minutes off the bench or less if he is a dick about things. A fair and equitable figure can be reached. Melo will get his money, but he also might have to compromise a bit. EVERYONE HAS TO COMPROMISE A BIT!!!!!!! Knicks, Clippers, and MELO.

This is true. Look, Phil wants the team to have its own identity and play organized ball. If Porzingis is already a headcase, now is the time to cut bait.
Phil can get a nice, tidy package of players who will fill whatever void KP represents (not much of one) and move on.
Smart on the part of the organization. CLE just gave the finger to Melo.
Melo would be wise to get a deal done ASAP, knicks would be wise to take advantage of this.........
Win-win is how things get done.
