It was reported yesterday that the Melo camp approached the Knicks about a potential buyout, and he was still reluctant to waive his no trade clause heading into the free agency period, and Phil had already made the decision to move on from him and head the team in a different direction.
It's been well documented how much of a Melo fan Dolan is, and he finally got personally involved yesterday when buyout discussions started taking place between him and management. Dolan clearly did not support the buyout decision. Phil and Melo had reached a stalemate. One or the other had to go. And Dolan--once again got involved--and chose Melo.
If this is true, is it good? Say what you want about Phil--his record as a Knick stands for itself--but at least he was starting to head the franchise towards a complete rebuild. And a complete rebuild had to involve parting ways with Melo. He had bought into the youth movement building the team around KP, Frank and Willy. Now what is the direction of the team heading into free agency with Mills as the GM, who has no experience? The franchise once again is in complete disarray with no vision.
I definitely see the discussions between Dolan and Phil going something like this: Phil telling Dolan that it's either him or Melo. And Dolan once again chose the aging superstar who refused to change his game and has never won anything in his career.
Where do the Knicks go from here? Does anyone really have any faith in Mills? And right when Dolan promised he would not get involved anymore with the team and made a commitment to Phil to honor the full term of his contract, he gets involved again, and we're back to square one.
Let me not remind all of you how terrible this franchise was when Dolan got personally involved with decision making. Shall I bring up how he forced Walsh to resign and gave up way too much to trade for Melo?
Many will rejoice that the triangle is finally gone (and I will not miss it either), but are we really any better off today with Dolan running things and Melo forcing out yet another coach/manager?

Dolan was ok with Phil trading Melo.
When Phil and KP had a discord, and then Phil put KP on the block, that was too much for any owner.
I don't think Phil was serious about trading KP, but when your president has ruined relationships with the top 2 stars, one of them a young emerging 21 year old, there's not many owners who would pick the prsident over the players.
This move is more KP than Melo. Melo may still move on. I don't think any new smart president coming in is going to want to build a team around Melo. I think the first thing a smart new president like Griffen would do is try to up Melo's value a little for half a season by playing him at 4, develop a decent relationship with his camp, and then trade him to a contender.
A buyout would have been a terrible move. Wouldn't have done anything for us. If Phil left because Dolan wouldn't let him buy him out, it's all on him. You have a President who would have 50 million dollars of the cap going to 2 players not playing. Put in Derrick Rose for another 20 million reward for going to the exit interview and kissing Phil's ass and u have nearly all our resources going to 0 or net negative players.
Next guy has to do well to make sure KP resign with us. If we don't trade him, and he and his brothers think Knicks are shit, then we really need someone who can beg for their forgiveness and sign with us.

In proper Knicks fashion they fire the guy JUST AFTER they pick up his 2 year option.

For the record, I think he sucked as president. The Rose trade, the Calderon trade, the Noah deal were all just terrible. And that's not just with the benefit of hindsight for practically anyone not named nixluva.

I like Frank. I think almost anyone else would have taken Smith or Monk. The thing I liked most about the Frank pick was it appeared to e a commitment to rebuilding and not a quick fix.

Phil got Phil fired. You just cannot do the things he did as a GM. It was clear that the coach was being forced to run an offense that he did not want to run. That is unheard of. You don't try to embarrass your best player and get into a war that you are going to lose. Did he really think the players were going to side with him over Melo and KP. Then you let it be known that you are talking with teams about trading your best young player and then you don't complete the trade. The only bad part about all of this is I think we would have drafted Dennis smith if Phil was not here, and I think Smith is going to be the better player. Hopefully I am wrong about that.

Most fans were in cahoots to get Phil out. This is one of the few places where people thought he was doing a good job instead of putting up the worst record in franchise history.

Hard to have evidence of Melo NOT being on team when he is on team. Although there was that Lin era when Melo didn't play much
