I do believe Phil/Gaines are good drafters. Look at KP, Willy. I think Nti will fit in any offense and his defensive potential is huge, but if Dolan was do this, ass should have done it before the draft. Or perhaps he knew Phil drafts well and wanted this process to be over before they made a move.
But I think if Phil and Dolan part ways a month ago, it's a totally different draft for us.
We probably wouldn't have picked Ntilikina, but that doesn't mean he's not the right pick. He has a lot of upside as a 2-way player and i expect him to be very good. Strong starter at a minimum in a couple of years. He fits the new NBA which values shooting, defense, and ball movement, and less one on one/iso play.
I'd still pick Frank over Monk, no question. Smith would be a tougher decision, but I think I would still pick Frank. Monk had a small drop in the draft for a reason.

Ntilikina is a perfect small ball player. Can defend multiple spots, hit from long, handle the ball... nothing changes. This is a good player for us moving forward. I would not want a redo on this draft, especially considering its the same crew that picked KP/Willy. If not for them Mudiay is probably a Knick and KP plays for the Magic.
I would stay away from Dennis Smith Jr. no matter what. I would have been OK with Monk or FN. With that said, FN seems to have a lot of upside that I really like. He apparently just needs to work on his explosiveness, which is do-able.

MONK all day. Not saying he's a better pick than Frank.. But he's a NYC type of pick. So is Dennis Smith. But I like Monk and think if he develops his PG play he could be one of the top players in the draft and definitely higher than #11.

Smith got hit with the same tag Paul George got hit with-his team sucked and he's not a winner. I acknowledge his talent, but I question his fit in a winning system. Rookie of the year is nice, but it doesn't define a career. I've seen enough from short, ball dominant, PnR players who can't make their teammates better.

KP was a great pick! But he was also an athletic Phenom. 7'3 guy that can move like he does and shoot the three. You have to take him. Frank is a different story. Think Dennis Smith is the only one that would fall in that Phenom category in this draft. He was once rated number 1 among the players in this years draft class because of it and he is still incredibly athletic. Really do feel its one of the reasons Phil got fired. But your right, Phil did draft KP and Willy and by extension Gaines, so it made sense to let them draft this year. Just not sold on Frank but hoping your right.

it had to have been. Dolan is a slow mover. I suspect he was done with Phil but didnt want to phuck up the draft process. Ensure we got this draft right, or at least as planned and move Phil out.
It sucks because this org needs an infusion of youth and player development. Phil brought those things, however he showed no ability to build a team, manage coaches or what FAs were good fits.
I was thinking about that this morning. if phil was fired in april, who would we have picked? I would say we would have to get the best talent which is probably dsj or monk. however, it isn't a disaster that we have frank n. and we are abandoning the triangle. his big asset is perimeter defense which we need help at badly. he is also young enough and skilled to adapt ( hopefully).
Tough call as it was before the draft. DSJ you wonder about injury and attitude. Monk you worry size and defense. Nitty you worry about athleticism. Easy to 2nd guess any of these.

Frank the Kid is a very good pick at 18 yrs old. He has the benefit of two years of Pro ball under his belt and shows solid skills. Considering that he would be entering college in the fall, I see him as ahead of the curve. SL will see exactly what we have.

Agreed...if not for the injury in high school, Smith is a top 3 pick...IMO, Frank was a stretch at 8...
