Knicks · Anybody out there seriously expecting the Knicks to sign a big free agent? (page 1)

EnySpree @ 7/3/2017 9:22 AM
We're rebuilding... The Knicks reassured us with their actions and through Hornacek that they are sticking with the rebuild through youth. Why would we sign any major free agent at this point? We will sign someone but it won't be a major piece... it will be a "oh snap" guy on a humble contract. Just like we've been doing the last 3 years.
TheGame @ 7/3/2017 9:31 AM
We should not sign anyone. Let Rose walk, we let Holiday walk, and the only person we should even think about signing is an older Pg but only if it is on a one year deal. Save the cap space to facilitate a trade that might net us draft picks and roll with the team we have. I honestly think the team will improve by 5-8 games just from the lack of pressure and the development of KP and Willy, especially if Thomas can stay healthy as he is our best wing defender.
CrushAlot @ 7/3/2017 9:34 AM
I was checking out Clutch Fans to see what they are saying about Melo. One poster said the Knivks are trying to move Lee and Oquinn for cap space. Is this to accommodate a trade, sign someone, or absorb contracts? Not even sure if it is accurate.
mlby1215 @ 7/3/2017 9:40 AM
I don't really think they didn't want to sign big FA. It is just that they couldn't. Not signing anyone may be good for Knicks but bad for Mills because it would look like he is incompetent. He is trying very hard to make a name for himself.

This said, if Knicks wanted to refrain from overspending, they should have resigned Holiday. His contract is cheap and obviously we still could have traded him later for something if we had better young players.

Not signing him could have two meaning. It is just my guessing.

1. Like Ndour, Holiday probably is at the wrong side of power struggle. Probably Phil liked him so he is let go. It sounds crazy and sad, but it fits Knicks.

2. Perhaps they aim for a super FA and need the caps. Maybe George Hill? I don't know. He is 31 years old, right? Then it is quite possible that Knicks wants him. Probably 30mil per year. (I want to die)

Chandler @ 7/3/2017 9:42 AM
I have a sneaky feeling about Hill

A) He's not been signed yet. I am wondering whether there have been enough conversations with his agent to tell him they have earnest interest but need to move some pieces
B) I would be perfectly ok with that just as long as the term is short. I think his game is similar enough to Frank's, and that he's a professional, that they see him as a mentor and someone who will teach everyone to play the right way

On the flip side, he does not strike me as a typical Hornacek point guard, and I'm rarely right on predicting FA moves.

knicks1248 @ 7/3/2017 10:00 AM
Nobody wants to come here, not even the 2nd tier Free agents, not even our own FA. We are listed as the worst run franchise in all of sports.

This stupid rebuilding idea with 1 pick every season is ass backwards. We have no assets to dump for future drafts, and no assets to trade for younger players.

fwk00 @ 7/3/2017 10:12 AM
Fact of the matter is that aside from a few high profile malcontents none of the teams are overpaying this year.

Secondly, the contracts are shorter than players desire. Reckless spending is a thing of the past unless you're the Warriors or Houston.

The Knicks are in a great position to sign a player or two who fit the style of play Hornacek likes to play. They won't be 'win a ring' players, they'll carry lunch pails.

You can't play the game that way in NY. Mills will be made to look incompetent regardless of what he does. Stand pat he is incompetent make any trade he is incompetent. Sign the wrong FA he is incompetent. Get the drift of what life of an NYk executive looks like.

No but they could of kept Holiday for 4.5 million

Phil is gone and it sounds like Melo will be. I don't think there is a power struggle anymore. I think the Knicks are opening up more cap space either to facilitate a Melo trade or they want to sign someone, Hill?
Ndour a part of a power struggle is a bit funny. The way Randle is playing he maybe a part of a power struggle as well.

Its why we should of traded that malcontent Porzingis. It resets the clock on FA and gives us a window to restock until we have to pay anyone. Instead we won't be rebuilt and he will leave in FA. Knicks are truly incompetent. They don't realize how bad they are viewed around the NBA. Not to mention this soft generation of NBA players can't handle anything but praise, which makes the NY media tough to deal with.

There will be players coming back in a Melo trade scenario. Why pay 4.5 million and add more players at the same position possibly.

Awww - I thought nobody wanted to come here because Phil and the triangle? Or at least that's the garbage you were posting for the last two years, so now its the rebuild?

Welpee @ 7/3/2017 11:14 AM
If Denver were willing would you do a OQuinn for Mudiay trade? They seem pretty down on him and there's talk of Murray being their long term answer at the point.

Wait, what? So you don't want to keep players we own the bird rights for on cheap deals because of hypothetical trades that might not happen. How about getting rid of Lee who is overrated as hell and plug Holiday in as a cheaper replacement. Lee is worthless for this team, he is respected around the league and may garner a draft pick. We save 8 million and gain an asset. Those are the small deals that make you better.

mlby1215 @ 7/3/2017 11:24 AM
When I said power struggle, actually I did not mean Phil and Melo. There are many reasons Phil got fired, but why happened now? It has to be someone who get benefit out of it. Maybe Mills, or maybe that dude advising Dolan to take Uriji. I meant those guys who asked Dolan to push Phil out.

Melo may not like Phil, but I don't think he would not like another 3-D guy here because it only would help him.

Ndour thinks he is the victim of this power struggle. It is not my idea.

“Basically they needed some space in the salary cap,’’ Ndour said after the Knicks explained the decision. “That’s what they say. It had nothing to do with basketball. Just business.’’

“All I can say is Phil is the main reason I was here with the Knicks,’’ Ndour said when asked if this would’ve happened had Jackson not been canned. “Whether I’d stay with the Knicks or not, I have no idea.

And Randle? I don't know Randle.

btw, maybe we can say Gaines will be gone as well?

Ndour’s biggest fan in the organization was top Jackson adviser Clarence Gaines Jr.

His opinion is no longer important.

I know you like Melo. I understand it. I respect it. But at the end, everything shouldn't have happened. Melo is not the evil man, but he is certainly not innocent. Trying little harder to play within triangle with his new teammates would not cut his head off. Yeah, he won, but at what cost?

It turns out everyone loses. The only winner is Steve "I am always alive" Mills.

Oh, if you want to say there is no power struggle behind it and it is wise to fire Phil 3 days before FA and it is all normal and reasonable. It is fine, I can understand.

Sooner and later, Melo will have a new team and he probably will have a chance to get a ring. I see no reason that you will not be happy. You should be very happy, and have another team to root for.

Holiday was a cheap signing, and he is not necessarily a Triangle player, so you can't say he is a system only talent- I thought he showed some versatility last season and a 2 year contract like he got from the Bulls is not a franchise changer and if he plays well and we do want to deal him he would have even more value because of his cost.

Missed the boat on Holiday, IMO.

Yes, considering Holiday is not some unique talent we couldn't duplicate with other players (perhaps more economically). I like Holiday, but just like Derrick Williams, he's not hard to replace.

My point was that the 15th man getting waived for cap space isn't the sign of a power struggle or a slap in the face to Gaines. Ndour's contract was structured so the Knicks could waive him for cap space or if he didn't produce. He was right, it was business.

I don't think anyone thought we would get BIG free agents. however, we do need veteran help at the pg. it is a lot to sink or swim with frank n. and too much pressure on the kid. Darren collison or even deron Williams are good options and can come in cheaply.
