Knicks · Marcus Smart might be available (page 1)

Celtics signed a guy to a contract they can't afford so they have to consolidate.

Would you absorb Marcus Smart? #pause

BigDaddyG @ 7/4/2017 10:45 PM
Yeah, Marcus is a leader. He's limited offensively, but he's a tough SOB. He would teach our young guys the passion it takes to win, but allow us to suck enough to get a top 5 pick. Would the Celtics trade him to a team in the same division?
NYKBocker @ 7/4/2017 10:47 PM
Heck yeah! Dude is old school.
EnySpree @ 7/4/2017 11:05 PM
He's still on his rookie deal... its almost a no brainer.

Celtics still have Rozier who they love that could fill in as the primary back up pg. Makes sense for all

smackeddog @ 7/4/2017 11:32 PM
I would take any of the Celtics players they have to get rid of. However Jazz would be crazy not to work out a sign and trade
CrushAlot @ 7/4/2017 11:54 PM
Smart would be an awesome guy to get.
reub @ 7/5/2017 12:33 AM
Smart is a below average player.

Which players do we have that are better than him?

The thing is Smart would help the young players understand the level of effort and intensity they need to bring. We're not getting All Stars but it does make a difference the more players you add that have the needed toughness to compete at the NBA level. We'd be really building a roster of extra effort guys that have PRIDE.

He brings a certain amount of grit and hustle with his game. An attitude that is missing from the Knicks. He'd be a nice addition to the team.

GustavBahler @ 7/5/2017 1:10 AM
Mentioned O'Quinn in a deal for Melo, but they should try and offer KOQ in a deal for Smart. O'Quinn would fit in well with what Boston is doing. Maybe Kuz as well. Smart would be a real get.
shinmen @ 7/5/2017 4:16 AM
He really would amp our defense up. Another benefit, KP would finally learn to punish smaller players with him. I remember a game where Smart completely shut down KP. That should not happen. Smart would help the defense against opponents and help our guys as well.

There's no way they will salary dump him.
Or Crowder.
They are going for a ring.
They've already let go of Olnyk to make the space.

I think they need to lose one more contract. My guess is it's Rozier.

They're still short if they dump rosier by like a million

Smart is tough and competitive and a bit of a loose cannon

One thing we'd need to really think through is how will he handle all the losing

He could just leave for FA but he could also be 10x more disruptive than Phil ever was

TPercy @ 7/5/2017 8:02 AM
Imagine if we can sign Smart and trade Melo for a decent defensive 3....we might actually win something

Want to change the culture? The locker room needs guys that give s fuck. Marcus Smart gives a fuck. I'm going that's the theme we're going for in this off season. I think a Knick fan wants to bang almost as much as we want to win.

I'm not against it per se

Just saying we need to be considering this. There's a bit of Ron Artest in Marcus

One IMO under appreciated aspect of his game is he's a very effective passer

If we think he's good from a psychological standpoint I'm all for it

Once we get better and more reliable perimeter defense I think we'll see better D from KP and Willy

reub @ 7/5/2017 9:39 AM
If we're going to trade for a young PG why not go for a good one like Corey Joseph, who might be available if we take on a contract from the Raptors?
Chandler @ 7/5/2017 9:57 AM
poked around some more on Smart. Back in college he shoved a fan during a game (forgot about that). this past year he had a couple of incidents -- flipping the bird etc.

Again, we'd need to make sure that in our current (losing) environment someone with his hyper-competitive instincts (which are generally a good thing) won't implode and become disruptive (i.e. can he stay focused on longer term)

Good points. I think KP would welcome someone as competitive as Smart. Don't believe Smart has gone into Rondo territory when it comes to dust ups, but you're right its a risk. If the price is right the Knicks should take that risk IMO.
