Looking at their cap #s this is high for them--but they would still be under the cap. They paid up for Bazemore--so perhaps the thinking is do not lose the asset and we can always look to trade him for value.
I don't think they match the offer. The Knicks vastly over paid for THJs services. They took $50 million player and upped him by $21 million. The Hawks who are rebuilding have options that they can utilize to get something back. They probably can go after Simmons from Spurs and stick to the Spurs tree. Simmon probably being steered away from NY anyways so a solid landing spot would be Hawks.

Are they really going to lose an important player and asset over just $4 or 5 mil a season? I really don't know.
They signed Bazemore to a huge deal last year. I don't know if it makes sense to have almost 40 mil f your cap annually tied to Bazemore and Hardaway. But I think they could have announced that they were not going to match immediately. They wanted to keep Tim when the offseason started but I don't think they want that contract.
It really depends on who they love more.
If they tank, they possibly get Luka Dončić, 18yr or another top 5 choice.
If they resign THjr, 24yr, then they probably will not be bad enough so it is just a trade-off.
