Knicks · Rotation and plans with Melo. (page 1)

nyknickzingis @ 7/14/2017 11:39 AM
If Knicks keep Melo, they need to play smaller next year,

Porzingis/Hernangomez
Melo/Thomas
Hardaway/Kuzminskas
Lee/Dotson
Baker/Ntilikina

My thoughts:

Would make sense to trade O'Quinn for a 3 or stretch 4. Lance Thomas fills this role but he is often injured. Kuz is still unknown, he can do it at times but will he get better on D. We should take a look at moving O'Quinn for some asset of future value (draft pick) or a 3/stretch 4 that can fit into our rotation.

Willy needs to come off the bench, because I can't see Porzingis/Willy/Melo run the offense or defense actively. I don't like that we would have to do this, but it would get better team play and more chemistry which in the end will result in better individual play. Willy can be our go to scorer off the bench, which he is more than capable of. I like Frank and Willy playing screen/roll and being the "big 2" for the second unit.

Let Melo, Hardaway, Lee all start. 3 wings. It's going to allow them to speed up the game, run the ball and shoot early 3 pointers which is what they were trying to do last year at the start of the season. Baker has a better feel for being a point guard than Rose, so he'll get the ball to the open man sooner.

Porzingis at 5 is risky. On offense he will have more spacing and ability to beat defenders off the dribble. Our floor spacig would be fantastic. Defensively he'd block many shots. I worry about the power defending. He will get beaten up and players will want to rebound over him and push him down low. Playing at 4 protects him from this as Willy and Noah do the board battles.

Don't see our defense improving all that much, but we could get up there in points. Last year's team was averaging 105. This type of lineup could get you 107-108. Give up even more, maybe. But they will be able to score, spread the floor, and would have possibly two all-star shot makers in Melo/KP.

Forecast for team

Floor: 30 wins, 7th in lottery
Middle: 35 wins, 11th in lotter
Ceiling: 40 wins, 7th seed in East

If Melo stays then we need to make sure we trade CLee and KOQ. We need to get long small forwards that can defend and rebound.
CrushAlot @ 7/14/2017 12:03 PM
I think Melo is a rocket at the start of the season. The Rockets probably need to budge from their not trading Gordon, or Capella stance. Hopefully this reset nets the Knicks a real asset. There were talks around the draft that the Knicks might be able to get Harkless from Portland with a pick to dump his deal. I think there was more to a deal like that but Harkless shouldn't be the center piece of a Melo trade.
NYKBocker @ 7/14/2017 12:08 PM
I would love a CLee for The Mayor trade right about now.

or a CLee and Randle for Faried

I like that deal also. Since we are bringing old Knicks back how about Clee for Lin.

I keep saying this, melo will be brought out just like amare towards the end of his contract.

Why he has an opt out. Knicks just have to make sure he uses it by giving him limited playing time. 10-15 minutes is fine.

Yes, of course that will happen. Keep telling yourself a max contract guy is going to settle for playing third team minutes. Maybe you let Melo play alot if it's a blowout?

"We want you to stay Melo, mostly because we aren't getting anything but worse by trading you"
"Cool, need to start making plans for PR player practices with KP and Billy and the New Frog"

"Oh, and by the way, just think what it will be like to paid around $1.5 million per minute, since we are going to give you something less than Kuz minutes..."

At least I know the young player get a chance to develop. You going to win a championship by playing Melo his customary 35 minutes. Max contract or not playing time will be dictated by the effort level given on both ends of the floor.

TPercy @ 7/14/2017 2:35 PM
I thought Hardaway can only guard opposing 2's? Besides Hardaway can't play with Melo on the floor. Would be a disaster. Can't we just have him as the sixth man?

no way dose hardaway come off the bench opposed to lee. lee will be our sixth man. Lance will start at the 3 he is one of our best defenders and when healthy isn't bad on offense.

team as of to date should be

KP,oquin
Melo,willy
lance,Kuz
timmy,Lee
frank, baker

i thought about it and willy should be groomed to take over the 4 spot he is quick and agile, he is only 6 foot 10 inches. his game screams LMA. if anything i only wanna see willy at the center position when we go small.when melo uses his eto, willy will take over the 4 spot.

that team if healthy should easily make the playoffs in the weak east, if shit hits the fan, we move melo to houston at the trade deadline

Because Hornacek is such a stern task master? Who's minutes would Melo be taking? The Knicks cut Ndour. I think Lance gets his minutes.

Exactly who cares if he settles for it or not? What's he gonna do? Demand a trade?

Ron Baker might just be our best rebounder out of our 5 starters. I don't like it.

Lee can't come off the bench. As a starter he's gun shy, ...simply not a gunner mentality.
Again, the objective is some pics along with the talent. Forget running with Melo. He's 33 and wants a half court ISO game. While I'd like Carola, rockets ain't giving him UP. Gordon? Maybe

Your right if we keep Melo he must be paired with a Forward who can defend and rebound but everyone likes guys like that

Melo should be the 6th man if they can't trade him. He can still log a ton of minutes and score a bunch of points and help the team in the short term and long term. What a novel concept.
