Knicks · If the Knicks truly do not want Melo (page 1)
TheGame wrote:Why would you do that? With Melo the team has a chance to make the playoffs. What you do is see how the team looks and if it looks like there is no chance for playoffs, you trade him in feb. it is likely he will be more flexible then. If the team is playing well, then you go for it. These kids could use some playoff experience.
Melo ain't getting the Knicks to the playoffs. He make no one better and jacks up shots at a ridiculous inefficient rate. That would kill player development and set the franchise back even further.
The best thing to do is not play him big minutes so he utilizes his opt out. Scoring record and All Star games are extremely important for Melo he will cave in.

If that means he sits a season---thats that. Id like to play melo at a reduced role--but if the Knicks feel its in their best interests--than do what you have to do. Weve seen this in sports many times--just kep the player home until a reasonable trade comes calling. Hopefully Melo increases his trade list and everyone can walk away happy.
How does this increase his value?

Melo's value is what its always been ever since he came into the league. Everyone has known for a long time what his value is, except only now he is older. He's a talented yet inefficient volume scorer who is still capable of 30 point nights and occasionally hit big shots with some dazzle with practically no defensive effort.
There's no such thing as increasing or decreasing his value anymore. It stopped a long time ago. These media idiots who constantly harp on his "value" have 0 idea what they're talking about.

No, we're trying to stop being the laughing stock of the league. You don't do this with someone who (rightly or wrongly) is considered an all-star and is healthy and well-liked. We'll be seen as the team that treats its stars like crap.
nixluva wrote:I don't think any kind of drastic treatment of Melo is needed. You can reduce his minutes in a logical way. He really doesn't need to play big minutes every night anymore. There's too much younger talent for Melo to log big minutes. IMO it's preferable that we find a good trade but if not then you start the year with Melo and see if he opens up his list of destinations so you can get a better return.
If the Knicks truly want to go in a different direction--than playing Melo makes 0 sense. The whole team is disrupted with Melo. I like Melo at the 4 but hes 32-33 years of age and thats not where the KNicks want to be per their management. So sitting him away froim the team until a trade can be consummated makes a ton of sense. Why fake it?

The Knicks have tried to facilitate Melo every step--time for Melo to open up a bit to help the Knicks.

I agree. But how does that increase his trade value?

so keeping the player that was voted "best teammate" (by his teammates) away from the team should do the trick..smh

I actually think the Knicks will have more trade options by December 15 when signed players can then be moved. Teams will be more flexible at that time.
Paris907 wrote:Briggs I am concurring 💯 % with your assessment. THE 20 Plus shots he wants to jack per game would be better served by having those shots be distributed between KP Wily and ThJr. Nitty had to learn to take his too. Otherwise their natural tendency will be to defer to Melo as the 24 second clock winds down. They've to learn that these are the shots they've to make. A painful process perhaps, and one that will secure a high lottery pick perhaps, yet its the road that management and fans have committee to.
First off, that "100" percent is really cool. Second, teams want to see what they are getting. Melo becoming a couch potato, out of sight, is going to make it harder to move him.
Teams want to see Melo in good shape (for his age) and dropping buckets. Not sitting on his ass collecting a paycheck.

Going forward, yes.
Is this team going to compete in the next two seasons with Melo?
Its not that Melo is not a very good player, he is. Its that he might opt out after this year and as mentioned he will take 20 shots.
Also, he will help win some games. That's good, but if a team has aspirations of building then he keeps you from getting a higher draft pick.
Not tanking per se, but it delays the process.
Does this make sense to you?

I'm telling you how I think a lot of players (possible FAs we could sign) around the league will perceive it. I'm not saying it's right or fair. That's a whole other discussion and what you and I think is fair doesn't even matter anyway.

I don't understand the desire to punish a guy because he is exercising the NTC that was given him. I don't know how that would fly with the league office and the player's association. It also would be a really bad look for the Knicks as an organization and the Knicks need to repair their image around the league not make it worse.BRIGGS wrote:and Melo is forceful on only going to Houston--th only reasonable solution is to "keep him away from the team" until a suitable trade can be found. They should do what any respected professional franchise would do. Move on by taking the hit for signing him to a NTC and changing directions. All respectable businesses know they have to pay the price for a mistake. They take it like men and move on. Specially after the previous Prez trashed him. But most Knick fans want to keep acting like this is a middle school team and they can force players to do anything they want even after screwing them. What are the long term repercussions of being a unprofessional franchise? Clue...look at the Knicks. Would hate to do business with that type of mindset. Mills hits me as that type as well. Reason why I think the Knicks are not any closer to being a respectable franchise. We have the same slimy guys at the top. Luckily for Melo, he has all the power and will win out by forcing the back stabbing front office to deal him to a place that is best for him.
Btw Briggs...do you expect people you screw over and trash publicly, to help you out? Where does this thinking come from? Why would Melo help the Knicks out? For fans like you that would throw a player to the gutter for yiurniwn selfish interest? I know I wouldn't. And dedinately would not waive my trade kicker.

Knicks should first play Melo like nothing happened.
Start him and let him do his thing or whatever he is comfortable to do.
If he will not play defense or will break offensive possessions just seat him ans send someone who executes instead.
This can be done again and again until he will start playing as team need him to play or will go away with some convenient injury.
If however he will buy in to increase his value for next long term contract why not to use his services?
Melo has all control over where to go and Knicks all control of what they want to get for him.
If it is stalemate (and looks like it is) Knicks and Melo will need to coexist to the benefits of both sites.
... he just gets in the way of the young guys growing

Melo is being ridiculous with giving only ONE OPTION so F Melo! Let him stay until we can get a better deal for the franchise.
You don't know if Mills is slimy and actually many of the old Front Office guys have good reputations. The narrative you've bought into is mostly Media Driven and there are lots of agendas behind that. Melo would be gone already if not for his ridiculous stance of only one destination.
Contrary to your and Melo's belief he does not hold all the cards because the Knicks don't have to trade him. Taking on a bad contract is more detrimental than Melo's presence next season would be!
