Nothing else will matter unless we maximize his talents and put the right pieces around him. The way i see it we have 3 locked-in, long-term starters. KP, Hardaway, and Ntilikina. I see our backcourt fitting well together and complimenting him well. The frontcourt is another story. Porzingis is absolutely a center. In fact, he is the perfect center for today's game. The next year or 2 can be used to see how Willy and Kanter fit into the long-term next to KP. Maybe it will work, but ultimately i see them better suited as 6th man types that can feast on reserves and have the second unit offense be built around one or both of them.
If i'm building this thing around Porzingis, i'm trying to put 2 defensive-minded, versatile forwards around him. I'm using a draft pick this summer in the mid-to-late lottery on Miles Bridges or Justin Jackson, who can cross between forward positions, shoot the 3, defend multiple positions, and rebound. Summer 2018, if we have enough cap space, i'm going after Robert Covington for the other forward slot, who does those things as well. If we don't have the cap space this summer, or want to be patient, i'm targeting Michael Kidd-Gilchrist or Tabias Harris in summer 2019. Allowing Porzingis to have the space at center to be a mismatch nightmare and surrounding him with shooting, athleticism, defensive versatility, and toughness is the way to go in maximizing his talents.
Nope.... We are building the best 5 we can. Every other team is building around 3 players. We gotta build around 1? Nope... change mindset.... We need to just keep building this team. We're on the right path

I agree. We could easily be building around Kanter, Willy, THjr... we dont know. We need to see. KP looks like the most talented and highest ceiling guy. Is he going to be better than Anthony Davis? Cause that guy is a two way star in the mold of KG and his teams cant win games. We need the whole unit.

I'm convinced the Knicks know this and their approach to building this team seems to bare this out. Having as many high quality players as possible is the best approach for this team and they will have time to find the right mix of players as we move forward.
I like this starting group of talent. We have to see what works best and develop the young talent. That takes trial and error. They have to play this out and see who rises to the top.

If you read my entire post, we essentially are building around 3 players, KP, Hardaway, and Ntilikina. We need a direction. Building around a group, with Porzingis as the focal point, is the idea. Having a direction is key. Finding the best 5 to compliment each other is the goal, but there needs to be a starting point.
Like the gm Perry said, building around the young core of KP,willy, thjr, baker,Frankie, if kanter can improve his defense, he should be thrown in there too. I also really like Dotson guy is a serious dead eye, but not your typical 3 point specialist. He has potential to be a good ball handler, defender.
I love how if we win now it helps kp and the youth get valuable experience, if we lose we still grow and get a player like doncic to add to the future.... it’s a win win situation without the melo drama

YUP! Also because we have so many young players there's no need for any PANIC moves. This is more about development, growth and assessment of what we have. After that we can more effectively target the right additions going forward.

How fast they forget about our history of shortcomings trying to do that.
Agree and may add that, although think he may be, KP has not yet proven he is worthy of building around.

No he hasn't, but it's a chance you take, as it's the best chance to build something sustainable here. Nothing is guaranteed. You just project how things could turn out and try to make it happen.

Also we can't forget that we're talking about a 22 yr old kid that was woefully underdeveloped physically. KP was behind the curve in terms of his strength. We still have a ways to go before he fully matures physically. IMO he projects to be a BEAST.
The good thing is we have some kids around him that can play too. I know it's more popular to think the KNicks don't really have any significant talent, but I think that's just Media Bias and Fans being jaded. KP and Willy are top flight prospects and we've added THJ, Nitty, Kanter... I mean that's not a bunch of scrubs even if there's no Elite guys.
So looking forward, there’s much talent on the horizon out of Europe as college. DONCIC? Yup, Porter? yup. What will this team need? If you’re Objective is to win the East in 3 years, you’ll need an athlete. KP is athletic. But he’s 7-3” and likewise Wily is okay and a solid contributor but not s stud athlete. Look at Jason Tatum or J Jackson. Those are 2 way stud athletes. That’s what we will require. A stud athlete perhaps Porter, Someone who can score inside and out, play D, Competitive and will score 20+ night night out. You’ve complementary players in Wily/Frank and perhaPs Dotson in the rotation. Now come up with the one kid that when KP ain’t gettin it done, teams will have to fear.

He's talking about Maryland's Justin Jackson, not the UNC one. I think Jackson has to show a lot more before I consider burning a lottery pick on him
Bridges would be a good addition tho

Don't you just hate when a "Gotcha" backfires?

Isnt it a bit early to tell if they are only "complimentary?"
I mean this is the whole point in drafting and building and scouting and investing in young players to develop. I am not saying any one of them end up being stars, but its really tough to predict guy's ceilings. Cant promise you that Frank or Dotson will become big time players, but I like the chance we are taking on these guys for a variety of reasons. This is the fun/patience part... letting these guys grow.
NBA Comparison: Luc Richard Mbah a Moute/ Gerald WallaceWeaknesses: Does not have one aspect offensively that stands out or which allows him to consistently score the ball … With his size and frame, will almost certainly be a perimeter player at the next level, but he lacks the polish and skill necessary to consistently operate on the wing … He does not have break down ability off the dribble and he is especially shaky handling the ball with his left hand … His jumpshot (while definitely improved) is still very inconsistent … The release comes high off his head and it is somewhat of a sling motion, which results in a fairly flat shot that goes all over the place … At this level, he has a size advantage on almost a nightly basis, but he still chooses to take the majority of his shots from the outside … Takes a high number of off balance shots, but does not show the ability to convert them at a good percentage … He does not have a great touch around the basket, and unless he can get inside position on the defense, he struggles finishing when contested … Not very disciplined defensively, he gambles far too often and leaves his team susceptible to giving up easy baskets …
Not so fast.
I think realistic sentiment will kick in some day
Do we really think KP can give 36 minutes and 95 games a year? Answer no
Realistic--we build WITH KP and keep him at Duncan late stage minutes 24-28 with 7-8 rest games. When he has a magic game--let him go 36-38 but most part play 8 minutes Q 1 sleep until 6 minutes Q 2 and repeat.
Porzigis is supposed to be hurt again? We can't crown the kid the sun that everything revolves around. We just have to keep getting better. Gotta build that starting 5... that power rotation
This is something I was thinking about when it comes to this team being better than expected.
