Knicks · Why is the team struggling so much with Kanter on the floor? (page 4)

How'd that work out, Bonn?

It didn't work out well. We lost to the terrible Hawks without Kanter. We saw that, except for the corpse of Noah, Kanter is by far our best defender at the five. We have no one who rebounds anything like him and causes other teams the heartburn that he causes them. Plus his offense is much better too. Only 25 years old, plenty of heart, and a keeper.

Bad. Why are you asking it as a question? I'm happy to report whatever happens (good or bad) about Kanter in this thread. I bumped the thread when his on/off numbers started improving. It's up to -2.5 now. I posted this thread to ask questions not prove some conclusion.

Best defender? The team has still played very well with KOQ on the court in these last 2 games (+5 on, -32 off). The problem with losing a starter is having to go deeper into your rotation of rusty/inferior subs.
Kanter is definitely the best scorer at the 5 though.

Sure O'Quinn is a good defender when the offensive player runs right at him because he can barely move his feet most of the time.

There are 3 types of plays that drive me nuts when watching KOQ

1) Gets pass and is completely wide open 15-20 feet from basket and should shoot it cause he is within the flow of the offense but pump fakes so as to allow the defense to right itself and for his defender to close gap.

2) Sits in paint while his man is involved in pick and roll and is completely ineffective because of it.

3) Constantly looses his man in transition and/or decides to pick up the wrong guy and thus allowing an easy basket.

Might not be able to find many takers for Courtney Lee because of that contract, but I'm in favor of trying to move Lee and KOQ while their value is high.

We're going to have to trade at least one of our three centers (Kanter, KOQ, Willy). I need more time to decide which one. KOQ is probably going to cost $40 to 50 mil and Kanter $80 to 100 mil. Willy costs little but brings less to the table.

Someone referenced Noah as a sunk cost and I appreciate what he means. Yet as a practical matter, are the Knicks ready to dunk $30-40 Million at the 5? Even if Noah is stretched he’s at $7-8 mm. I assume Kanter (still with negative +/- is gonna run $20-$25Mm. Keep KOQ and it’s over $35mm before Wily. I like Kanter, yet i hope to see if his presence makes us a .500 Plus team which I doubt. I’ve said repeatedly - despite his welcomed ferocity in the paint- that Begley/Ayers or Bamba would be cheaper and all more athletic or better defensively.
Let him walk as much as it hurts and it’s a great year for a 5. Then with the money you save between KOQ, Kanter, Lee and stretching Noah, we go find a real 3 like Middleton.

You definitely don't let Kanter or KOQ walk IMO. They're playing well enough that you trade them for assets if you're not going to keep them.
I called Noah a sunk cost, and he is. It's tempting to count him as money we're dedicating towards the center position but that matters only if we're going to play him. Would you feel better about paying KOQ or Kanter if we had a $72 mil sunk cost SG who was going to get 0 mpg? The irony is that if a player is going to get 0 mpg, it doesn't matter what position he plays.
