Knicks · So uh who was guarding Vucevic? (page 1)

Paris907 @ 12/3/2017 8:03 PM
Vucevic is a solid professional but no longer the force he was. Sure, EK board and is a force inside but the defense is a concern. Boston is looking to add Anthony Davis or maybe even Boogie. With either at 5 and Embiid with the Sixers, we need a bona Fide stopper inside. Perhaps Ayers, Bamba or Begley are a solution.
GustavBahler @ 12/3/2017 8:13 PM
Kanter's defense this season has been better than billed. Chalk it up to an off night, and not having KP as his wingman. They are an effective tandem on both ends of the court. Not enough to trade Kanter. Brings too much to the table. Transition D was not there.
arkrud @ 12/3/2017 8:35 PM
If Kanter will be defensive stud he will be an all-star.
Of course he is not. We will never have him if he was.
EnySpree @ 12/3/2017 9:11 PM
Vucevic is a legit scorer at the center. Let's not romanticize this matchup to support the bullshit peiple said about Kanter. Scoring 30 is not that far fetched for any similar player. It's not like we're talking about Greg Kite

Vucevic has trouble with guys that can shoot from distance. And Vucevic can muscle underneath for rebounds. Kanter was outplayed.

Kanter had 18 and 16... safe to say they went at it.

Paris907 @ 12/3/2017 9:53 PM
I agree Kanter played very well. Yet is was still +/- 3.
16 and 18 are fine numbers and appreciate his picking up the offensive slack without #1 and #2 scoring options but my concern is his defense. Not his board work. Martin I think you meant Kanter has trouble with big guys that can take it outside. That’s the trend though...stretch 5 here to stay.

yes, wrong guy above. Didn't pay too much attention to the stats but felt like Vucevic just dominated Kanter or at least Kanter couldn't really get on track because of him.

Kanter is good asset because he produced what is expected from him consistently.
He is consistent in his weaknesses too.
Kanter is easy to use in any system. So he is a good trade asset too.
In this game we have no options to cover for his shortcomings so they get exposed.

KP would have defended Vucevic outside while Kanter stayed inside or viceversa. The problem was that if Kanter decided to leave the paint, Beasley would start throwing rose petals in an arrow shape pointing to the basket.

is that how the defense works? KP guards the big who is on the perimeter and Kanter the one under the basket?

If KP or other adequate big (not Biz who is clueless) will be in the game Kanter would be able to get out on Vucevic and get help inside when Vucevic will drive over him.
It will still be a struggle for Kanter but he is a bit better one-on-one inside lately so result would be better enough to change the outcome of the game.
In general we are too thin on adequate players to be able to win shorthanded and on the road.

Its not that simple. Kp is a better overall defender than Beas. Vucevic gong off is more of a team defensive breakdown. Vucevic has the Knicks number anyway. Too much emphasis is being put into this. Vucevic isn't a bum. He's a good player in this league. He can drop 30 from time to time. Same like Beasley can drop 20-30 when he feels like it.

Why don't we talk about how we locked up Aaron Gordon? I guess guys just want to only harp on negative things rather than talk about positive. How about we didn't have KP or Hardaway and still almost won? Gotta have positivity before negativity

I'm glad we locked him up, because i don't understand how he is scoring all these points. Every time i watch him he looks so mediocre, then i look at his stats from time to time and i see he goes for 40. I just don't get it. He looked yesterday how he looks every time i watch him. Decent player who lacked an elite nba skill but has elite athletic ability to make things happen here and there. But people talk about this guy like he's a star and i almost never see it.

Well yeah, they'd have the ability to switch the faster big to the perimeter on defense so that Kanter could guard underneath the basket. Kanter has shown that he does get blown by at times (even though he has improved tremendously i think). In this case, the switch wouldn't work because Beasley is not guarding anyone anywhere.

Biz issue is luck of focus and desire to put some work.
He will never get better or worth. He is what he is.
We do not have backup PF that's why he getting minutes.
No starting SF and PG, and no backup PF and SG. It's a shortage on 4 positions out of 5.
When we were missing 6 NBA level players out of 10 it was amazing how close the game was.

position basket ball is fading, they official took the center position out of the all star game, and most pg guards in the league are combo, most sg play sf as well, most sf play pf, and pf play center.

Our problem is Kanter can't guard sf/pf. We are going to struggle 50% of the time because we have too many centers, bottom line

When there is no adequate SF and PF on the court even versatile PF/C will not help much.
Kanter is limited to only his position so he is not the one to help to plug a hole.
PF/C who can (like Kristaps may become) are All-star material and hard to come by.
Not in Molo-dump type trade for sure.

Paris907 @ 12/4/2017 7:13 PM
This shouldn’t be too hard to figure out. Lots of Knicks fans are so hungry for decency that getting in the playoffs is their objective and perhaps the team as configured without significant injury can get there. Yet despite the impact on the draft, If Vucevic can own Kanter, then Boogie, Embiid, and at least a 1/2 dozen more will use him defensively. Sure he will board like a man possessed and we all like that, but We will not go anywhere without a strong defensive presence. That’s why I am a proponent of securing a 5 through the draft. Cheaper, younger and a super class for 5s. More athletic. Two way players in the mold of today’s game.

There is a long way to go. Kanter May opt out anyway. Yet to say Vucevic owns the Knicks when this is an entirely newly configured team is missing the point. We’ve gaps on this team but the culture is changing. Let’s secure a 3/5
That is all star status and potential to complement KP.

Paris907 @ 12/4/2017 8:27 PM
I mean why pile on. It’s a conga line for Indiana And without our KP and THJr we are taking our lumps. I like Kanter, like his toughness and attitude. Yet hes -34 and Myles Turner, a young talented athletic 5 is +35. Toughness inside or lack thereof is apparent. I don’t want to offend any of the Kanter diehards but suffice to say that before Kanter is on our payroll for $20-25 Million a year for 4/5 years, consider that the second tier centers like Vucevic and now Turner are owning him. Worse, Young just goes to the bucket at will.
