Wrong. Melo had to approve of the deal first. He wasnt going to accept a trade to a team he saw as shorthanded, because of what was going the other way. Defeats the purpose of forcing a trade to a contender. Perry waited a long time, and pulled the trigger on the best deal Melo's NTC would allow.
Other teams knew that Perry was hamstrung. Asking too much for a player you yourself have thought so little of.

In retrospect it was a combo of many things but the fact is there were some good decisions that just did not work.
Noah was a bad decision because length of contract and statistical odds given his injury history did not add up.
Resigning Melo was a good decision that just did not work for many reasons. Rose was a good low risk decision that did not work. IT was an opportunity.
JH is now on record saying Free agents did not want in because of the system.
One can conclude it was a big part of the problem. I guess if the talent was there Like He had in Chicago and LA the system can inhance. IT did work.

Given this fact, the teams that are expected to win championships generally have at least few players who would be classified as "old."
