Knicks · Stay at 9 and hope for Trae Young (page 3)

Does Curry look any different than Young?
Didnt watch all of it, but looked like they were testing Young's stamina and 3pt shooting (sorry if its a repost)

Great shooter, nice handle, great passer. But he's going to be taken to the cleaners with his size and defense.
BRIGGS@ 6/2/2018 3:45 PM
Guy is as quick as a young Tony Parker He's not going to have 3 defenders draped on him He's the best passer draft has seen in years He stretches the floor to 30 feet
What dominates the nba? Offense

Not sure when fans started wanting only to draft players with NBA ready bodies coming out of college. Leaves out a lot of all stars, as well as HOFers, present and future. If Young turns out to be the real deal on offense, and just average on D, its worth the pick. We need a PG that draws double and triple teams away from KP, anyone who gets hot.
Unfortunately as someone mentioned upthread, its almost too perfect a situation for the Cavs not to ruin, lol.

If he or Carter fall to the Knicks at 9 there might be some really good trade back offers.

I wonder if Orlando would do a protected 1 to 14 in 2020 and pick 9 for 6? I'm not sure frank is a pg Mudiay is too much of a question mark. Burke is a back up
Having an engine like Trae Young might change the course of our team. I don't see any other player in this draft like Young.

For Orlando to do that deal they would need to be convinced we are play off bound in 2020 and they are left with a choice between two players that don't appeal to them (e.g. Porter and Young). It's risky business for them because if we don't turn the corner in 2019-2020, they'll have given up a pick for nothing. I think we would need to then offer less protection in 2021, and perhaps unprotected in 2022. But would that really appeal to them or would they rather just pick Porter or Young and go forward with them on the roster?
I think Orlando will stick at six, but they might be tempted by a deal if the prefer Mikal Bridges or Collin Sexton to help them compete next season under Clifford.

trae young is a reach. not everyone is made out to be steph. just because his shooting style is like steph does not mean he's going to turn into steph. note that curry is sneaky on defense and can steal passes due to a longer reach. with trae young, we'd be looking at trey burke defense, who was also taken at 9.

Yeah Frank will be the perfect backcourt mate for him as well. Young will get Porzingis closer to the basket where he belongs

Burke will only be here for another year if we draft Young. They would not overlap defensively well

Not the point. One of the reasons given not to draft Young was his build, which shouldnt be a disqualifier. Wouldnt have been a good reason to pass on Curry if GS had back then. Would rather roll the dice on a potential star this early in the rebuild than a role player.
My only real concern in this draft is if Perry/MIlls decides on Porter, even if he's still feeling the after effects from surgery.
Sort of reminds me of the draft that netted us Gallo. He had back issues during the draft process. Didnt become a lingering issue, but other injuries followed, lots of them. Sometimes one injury leads to others while conpensating for the initial injury.
Would like a healthy player chosen at the time of the draft, back issues can be scary.

I thought gallo's back issue was caused by tractor Taylor running into him in the preseason (or was it summer league?). While the op seemed to fix it, if you look at gallo's highlights from Italy to after surgery, he started playing in a completely different way and was way less quick and athletic. Don't know if it was due to the back injury or his weight gain.

Trae looks like a Kemba or Trey Burke as he looked last year. Good but with weaknesses due to less than Elite size, length and athleticism. He can pass and shoot well enough to be good but he’s gonna be a liability on D.

If we can get Kemba Walker production out of Young then I would be very happy. Frank would be an ideal back court partner for him. All Kemba lacks in Charlotte is a strong supporting cast, if he had that he's a good enough first option, not elite but good enough. In our case we've got KP as a first option, Timmy as a second/third, and if Young hits Kemba levels that's a second/third option. We'd be set scoring wise.

There were reports that he had back issues before the draft.

I agree with that. If we draft young or sign Kemba next summer it gives us a true second option with KP as first and Timmy as 3rd. Frank can split time between positions and develop as the defensive stud I think he can be. Having 2 guys in the lineup with PG skills is where the league is headed anyway.

I have zero confidence in Knicks management to have the vision to. What Trae Young is or the awareness and cahones to possibly trade up and make it happen

Knicks are in a massive talent deficit situation. (How many players on the current Knicks 15 man roster would NOT make the roster of every other NBA team? How many Knicks starters would be starters on every other NBA team? How many 2nd and 3rd and even 4th unit guys on every other NBA team would be instant starters on the Knicks?)
In this situation, you don't trade future draft capital.
The only time you do this is when your current roster's talent level in quantity, with true market approximation for their value, takes you at, near or above the current salary cap threshold. ( Basically it's time to dump 1st rounders for 2nd rounders because that guaranteed money is going to kill your cap situation) Knicks are nowhere near this point.
Over the long haul, a move like you are suggesting could set the franchise back five years.
