Knicks · Payton let go by Suns (page 1)

BRIGGS @ 6/24/2018 2:48 PM
If they really wanted him--they could probably sign him to one of those 1 year 8-10mm $ deals with promise of great PT. Put Payton and Frank in backcourt
JrZyHuStLa @ 6/24/2018 2:54 PM
No thanks.
newyorker4ever @ 6/24/2018 3:44 PM
Actually they're renouncing his rights in July along with Alex Len......and no thanks on Elfrid but i'd take a look at A.Len.
nykshaknbake @ 6/24/2018 4:54 PM
He can have Ron Baker's spot. Payton didn't do much with his opportunity with the Suns but I'd give him a shot.

Len is only 25...seem to recall him looking OK when he played against us. I would give him a look.

Payton cost Orlando dearly...Sixers knew how much they wanted him (Why you don't telegraph your feelings about a player pre-draft)and got the better of them.

June 26, 2014: Drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 1st round (10th pick) of the 2014 NBA Draft.

June 26, 2014: Traded by the Philadelphia 76ers to the Orlando Magic for Dario Saric, a 2015 2nd round draft pick (Willy Hernangomez was later selected) and a 2017 1st round draft pick (De'Aaron Fox was later selected).

No interest in him as a player...and even less interest in that hair of his.

I’d like to find one young player with upside on an ending contract that if he blows up I can trade for picks/ players at deadline

smackeddog @ 6/24/2018 5:44 PM
My priority this season is to find a player that can swing between PF/C, play defense and rebound. I’m fine with KOQ if he’ll return on a one year deal, but I’d like someone more athletic.

I’d also like to find a player that can play 10 to 20mins at centre, again who’s reasonably athletic.

Its in his interest and any teams interest for him to sign a two year deal. From the franchise side, the 2nd year would be a team option. From the player side, he'd want the 2nd year to be a player option.

What the Knicks can offer is a clear pathway to starting and playing time. Paying him 8-10 million is insane. Why not wait until Tier 5 of free agency and just see what's out there. See if he can be had for a bargain price.

Warriors just let go of Chris Boucher. I'd rather the Knicks use a roster spot on him instead.

I'm not a huge fan of his, but at this point, why not.

Agree, Payton was good enough to start. Perry was on staff when he was drafted.Doesnt ask too much and leaves the haircut from another planet behind.

If Perry passes though, gotta respect his inside info.

Agree dumb arse looking haircut that looks like it hurts his vision gotta go. Knicks were interested in a trade now can get him for a 1 yr contract imho. Personally I don't love him as he can't shoot-- but at 6-4 with more experience than frank-- we might be able to blow him up. If he is not interested in 1 yr deal move on to the next guy. What I do want is to get 1 good young free agent on a 1 yr deal for the deadline

Paris907 @ 6/24/2018 7:12 PM
Think we need another Pg with limited shooting skills ?

Frank Trey Mudiay Lee THJr Dotson in the back court. The Knicks don’t want him and wouldn’t sign him to the MLE

And Payton would avoid signing.

Of all those names only Burke is a competent point guard. And even then he may not be with us long term. Mudiay is a PG, but lets face it he was awful last season. Might as well deepen the pool of lead guards you are evaluating.

Only way i'd take Payton is if he was replacing Mudiay but zero sense in having both on the team.

I'm holding out hope that getting in shape, Fizdale's influence and playing for a new deal we'll see the Mudiay folks were projecting when he got drafted.
WaltLongmire @ 6/24/2018 9:32 PM
So let me get this straight...Two teams with worse records than the Knicks, Orlando and Phoenix, both in desperate need of a PG, get rid of Payton, and folks here want him on the Knicks, where he can slow down Frank's development?

Makes a lot of sense...Yup.

Mudiay is in the same class.

If you don't love him, then why in God's name would you want to pay him 8-10 million?

Think about what you are saying. You want the Knicks to find a young player with upside, who costs them nothing in trade, signs for a team friendly deal ( in your world, 8-10 must be team friendly...) as a street free agent , then trade him at the deadline for a king's ransom.

If a player is available, generally HE IS AVAILABLE FOR A REASON. The same reason every team could have him and doesn't want him (the Knicks won't be first on anyone's list without an overpay) is the same reason they won't want him in a trade later.

In MLB you can mine free agency for fringe relievers, watch some get good production, and then trade them to contenders at the deadline. That's a functional and reliable way to churn low level free agents. The NBA doesn't even come close to working that way.

The Suns did draft a PG in the 2nd round. And anyway I wouldn't be looking at 2 teams with a worse record than the Knicks as models on how to run a franchise. It would essentially cost nothing to grab him. Sure, it probably turns into nothing and you release him, but right now with KP out and nothing to play for I want to have a few more pokers in the fire.
