Knicks · Lets assume we get Kyrie: can the Knicks sign another max cat next year? (page 1)

KnixinSix @ 6/29/2018 11:03 AM
If the objective is a championship we likely will need another max to go with Kyrie to compete with the best of the West.

Can it be done? I think it can.

Alot come of the books at the end of next season. If we can move Lees contract which should be doable in addition to stretching Noah I believe we will have enough for BOTH Kyrie and another guy.

Kawhi would be the top choice followed by Klay if he actually would be willing to move one from the warriors.

I dont think anyone else is worth max money unless Fizs system could incorporate another small like Kemba in addition to Kyrie,Frank, and Burke.

KnixinSix @ 6/29/2018 11:06 AM
Knixkik @ 6/29/2018 11:22 AM
I don't think it can be done, but we should absolutely have the chance to add someone like Giannis in 2021.
newyorker4ever @ 6/29/2018 11:30 AM
I think it would take using the stretch provision on J.Noah which would be tough to do for me if we keep him for next year and then use the stretch provision on him when he's on his final year of his contract, maybe he could be traded after next year to a team just trying to use him as a expiring contract but we'd have to send an asset or two to that team with him. If we did use the stretch provision on him and was able to trade C.Lee's contract this year then i think we could come up with enough money to sign another max contract in 2020 to go with Kyrie.

I'm using round number:

(Lee is gone, KP cap hold, Noah stretched)

Player 2019-20
Joakim Noah 7,000,000
Tim Hardaway 18,150,000
Lance Thomas 1,000,000
K Porzingis 17,000,000
Kevin Knox 3,600,000
2019 pick 6,400,000
Damyean Dotson 1,600,000
Trey Burke 1,600,000
Cap Holds 2,500,000
--------------------------------------
Total Salary 58,850,000
Projected Cap 108,000,000
Cap Space 49,150,000

You are about $20M short for 2 max contracts.

Gudris @ 6/29/2018 12:43 PM
Naah, our only hope is player development, we have a lot of good young guys with high ceiling, jus hope they become really good
fishmike @ 6/29/2018 1:07 PM
Kyrie represents a few things. A clear chance to add an impact player in his prime using no assets. The only risk is the same with every FA signing, injury. For that matter Kyrie's risk is higher... not high, but higher than say a guy who plays 80 a year.

That is the only downside. This is a player with tremendous value in the league and the Knicks acquire him at 27, 28, 29 and 30 years old. Assuming we dont do anything stupid like offer a NTC this a player gives us MORE flexiblity, not less.

The other thing to consider is Irving may actually have upside. Take a look at his numbers post Lebron and playing for Stevens. Something to consider when comparing Irving to guys like Melo, Amare and McDyess.

What would this cost us? Not resigning Kanter and letting Mudiay walk. We would still have enough money to lock up Burke (small cap hold) afterwards.

Team could look like:
PG Kyrie/Burke
SG THJ/Frank/Dotson
SF Knox/Troy?
PF KP/Hicks
C Gonna a lotta guys looking for work!
This doesnt include Robinson, or our first rounder this year....

Knicks would have a young team loaded with firepower and no financial restrictions. All future #1s retained. Quality pieces at all salary levels to deal with if a big fish gets free...

Our financial situation is really pretty good. Only bad contract is Noah. Lee is moveable. Everything else is fine moving forward.

Why would you stretch NOAH, that makes no sense, to have 6 to 7 mill still on the books for 3 yrs after he's gone. That could be a valuable role players salary.

Once the knicks spend all their cap next yr, they can be just as busy the following yr with lance and noah coming of the books. Not only that, he is and expiring contract that could essentially be brought out for less by the trade dead line.

Seems like every off season some all star pops up and wants a new team

Of course you don't have to, it was just the scenario to find room for 2 max contracts.

Holy cow, this is an interesting site for showing cap space, etc.

Click on a player and you can waive them, stretch them etc.

Wouldn't next year be the only chance to get 2 max players? Kp's cap hold goes from 17 million to 27.5 million a year meaning we lose 10 million just by him signing his name. The more I think about it we may be forced to go all in even if it means trading away firsts to get rid of Noah and Hardaway. If that means having a team like this

KP
Knox
Kawhai
Irving
Frank

2019 Pick
Dotson
Robinson
Burke
2nd round 2019

so be it. That team could get to the finals

This team couldn't get past the Celtics and probably not even Philly. If Kawhi gets injured (check his games played here) https://www.basketball-reference.com/pla... then it's a first round exit. We have to be patient, we're at the beginning of our Process. So another 3-5 years to accumulate assets, draft well, and at the end of it we can try to target Free Agents with cap space to bring us over the top.

According to that, and another cap site, Lance thomas's final year is non-guaranteed, is that correct?! if so, that basically makes him an expiring contract this year so we don't need to trade him for cap space next year.

Seems there was a thread on realgm about this is January:

https://forums.realgm.com/boards/viewtop...

So really the only contract we need to shift this season is Lee, and I think we can get to max space even if we don't manage to do that.

yeah i disagree, this team could beat them both depending on the type of player we get in the draft this year. This doesn't include the vet help we could get for the vet min either. I think we could get at least 1 more legitimate rotation player to jump on. I would go one way or the other though. Either go hard and try to get 2 FA's or continue to draft young players and stay flexible. I just hope Porzingis doesn't leave. I wouldn't sign Kyrie and stop there that team is a middling team going nowhere that can't compete.

The Knicks have to resist trying to go too far too fast. That recipe leads to signing big names who come here and nest. Better steady progress with a youth corp who are supplemented not by MAX free agents but by well-paid, under-appreciated talents looking to prove their worth.

Klay or Kawhi in addition to Kyrie makes this team a team that has a legit chance to make the finals.

You dont pass that up for a longer rebuild if you dont have to!

Kristaps/Mitchell
Kahwi/Kristaps/Knox
THJ/Kawhi/Knox
Nkitilina/ThJ/Burke
Kyrie/Burke

Thats likely #1 in the East. Yes better than both Boston and Philly.
