Knicks · Max contracts (page 1)

These are the ages these players would be next year at the beginning of the season (year 1 of a 4 or 5 year max contact)

Durant 31 y/o
Kawhi 28 y/o
Kyrie 27 y/o
Klay 29 y/o
J.Butler 30 y/o
Kemba 29 y/o

Should we really sign a 31 year old player with a lot of years/miles to a long-term max contract?

He'll be great in year 1 and 2, probably still really good in year 3, then the drop off may saddle us with another Melo situation. He is currently still an amazing player and we may not have many good FA options out there... but it only makes sense if it's likely to actually work out.

Klay (who will likely never come here) would be the one I think would serve his contract the best, as he doesn't rely on athleticism and is 2 years younger.

Kawhi (also likely to never come) should be targeted based on his performance, age and playing style.

Strong pass on J.Butler and Kemba as I don't think they're really max players to begin with - and their age makes it high risk.

Kyrie is the tough one as he is younger, but doesn't play D and has injury-riddled history.

I'll get creamed for saying this but I think I'd go after Klay or Kawhi before Durant this summer. They will likely pass so I'd target other players under 30 that play both sides of the ball and keep developing the young guys. With cap space we can also trade for other star players that fit the criteria for success over a 3-5 year time frame. Today we made a trade to go "all out" for 2 max guys - hope we don't compound this possible mistake and end up regretting signing another star when father time catches up.

Maybe Knox does mature physically and becomes a Durant-lite type of player. 2 max guys will likely work against the development of these young guys

KD if he signs with Knicks would probably be on a 2 plus 1 because he'd need FO to show complementary pieces beyond 2nd Max player

A player that no one really talks about but could be had is Nikola Vucevic who averages 20pts, 12rebs, 3.8ast, 1stl, 1.2blks, 52fg%, 37-3pt%, 77ft%. The guy is a beast.

Not much defense though, right?

This yr he has been pretty good. But can't say that has been a staple of his career. I think he is at the age where he got all the veteran tricks down. At the same time this isn't a Kanter situation. The guy does everything and won't need to be featured.

I also don't think there will be a huge market for him and could be obtained for less than his actual worth.

Looking at his past analytical numbers his defense has always been solid. Has been his offense surprisingly that hasn't measured well analytically until now.

If that is true - that changes things for sure! Hope it is, and hope he actually wants to play here!

That's great. He also plays for the Orlando Magic, who hasn't made the playoffs Stan Van Gundy coached there.

Is Vucevic and another player doing anything to the get the Knicks a title?

The answer is no.

Euros in bbal is not a race, its diagnosis..
Seriously zo I do not remember any successful signing of Euro player in Knicks history.
It was never a thing. Correct me if I wrong...

what about Demarcus Cousins and KD?

Look I am there with not signing older players- but my impression is KD will perform at a high level well into his 30s.

They also traded away guys like Tobias Harris and Oladipo, who were viewed similarly coming out of Orlando (who are both on winning competitive teams today). Players that you know would have made Orlando a competitive team over the last 2 seasons.

Vooch is a really good player that is in his prime and has put it all together. He can defend, shoot the 3, elite rebounder, high level passer, hits his fts, gets buckets and is consistent.

I'm not looking for him to be the franchise player. But he is a high level robin like Paul Gasol was. He should be the backup target if we miss out on KD, Kwahi etc.. And even if we net KD. He would be a quality piece to pair with him or any of the cream of the crop since we have room for 2.

Funny thing is, I forgot he was even European.
