Knicks · Do we keep D’Andre Jordan on a lesser deal? (page 1)

It's not the sexy 2 star free agency, but we could do much worse, plus having plenty of young prospects and draft capital if the next star deal on the market presents itself.

It's possible if the cap climbs up to 113M as projected. Or it's possible KD comes here and we don't get a 2nd superstar, but just sign Jordan for his market value.C Jordan/Robinson

I really like that team. I think we could give the business to the Raps even if they resign KL. I also think this team beats 76ers in a 7 game series. So the East could have been had with that lineup while keeping ALL the assets assuming KD.

Obviously depends on the development of our young players.
KD plus Klay plus Zion would be nice.

Now imagine we pull KD and Kyrie.....
They can renounce DJ's rights in the summer (for cap room) and then offer him the MLE of about 9 Mil a year for like 3 years. Then hit Vonleh with the Bi-Annual Exception
Kyrie/DSJ
Frank/Dotson/ Trier
KD/ Knox / Lance
Zion/ Vonleh
DJ / Mitch / Kornet
Plus 6 more picks in 4 years to either add to the roster by trade or draft.
That is not a bad team at all...... 2-3 primary scorers, young depth on the bench that can score, shooting, defenders, rebounding, and can get busy in the paint. That's a lineup that will give a lot of teams in the East problems.
Even if say we fall in the draft and get Reddish (who I think will be best player available at 5)
Kyrie/DSJ
Frank/Dotson/ Trier
KD/ Reddish / Lance
Knox/ Vonleh
DJ / Mitch / Kornet
The knicks are a really good small ball 4 shooting team starting Knox and can start Vonleh at the 4 if they want more rebounding instead. Plus 6 more picks in 4 years to either add to the roster by trade or draft.

If you are under the cap, you don't get the $9M MLE.

They will be under the cap so won’t have the full mid level exception. There’s a lesser exception that runs about 2 years 9 mil total.

All we can offer him (If we sign KD and Kyrie) is the room MLE, which starts at $4.7mil. Good luck with that! If you wanted to offer him a deal starting at $10mil, then you'd have to trade away Frank and Dennis Jr and more in a salary dump.

We can ship Ntilikina and Thomas in a deal together (Lance has 1M guaranteed) and some team would gladly absorb without giving anything back because of Ntilikina. That would save $6M. Drop Trier and resign him for part of the smaller exception, that gets us up to about 10. Maybe the cap comes in higher and KD and Kyrie agree to give a little back. We can easily get up to 15M.
Things can go south quickly in NY, dont know if Irving is the guy to lead us through it. Durant sure. Would rather try to make it work with DSJ, or draft a PG, if Zion isnt available. Would rather max out at other positions, if necessary. Dont believe Irving/Durant will get us to the promised land. Would love to be proven wrong though.

Agreed, not sold on Kyrie.. mainly bc of injuries & that he likes to play a one on one game.
Seems like Celtics are a better team without him. Let’s also see what Smith Jr could do.

There is ZERO chance KD's coming here without a 2nd superstar. That's the tough part of all this, to get the only guys it actually makes sense to give a max contract to, they'll have to sell it to 2 guys who want to do it and play with each other.
Either way I wouldn't give DJ a 12-14 mil per year deal, he's not worth it and it'll prob be a deal they'll want to get out of in a couple years anyway.

I don't necessarily agree about him not coming here without another star. He may just want to completely rebuild his image and play on a team surrounded by young talent he can lead (similar to lebron.) Or he might actually consider D Jordan to be that 2nd star. Has DJ declined at all? Maybe a tad, but he's improved his free throw shooting tremendously and his numbers are the same as always. Without CP3, his numbers were expected to decline regardless. KD and DJ with this current group, plus our 2019 pick can make some noise.

We don't have quality young talent though, which I also feel about the Lakers. The difference is LeBron didn't have the flexibility as a FA that these guys are going to have this offseason of having someone they can definitely pair up with. Most of our guys are a dime a dozen. Knox is really the only one who has the potential to be more and he's super raw. It's not like we have a budding young star that we can sell at this point. That team isn't winning a championship, and that's what this should be all about. Signing DJ would probably prevent another max to be signed in the future too, we'd be left with a team that's OK that makes the playoffs and never really does anything more.
But I do think it's irrelevant because KD is in the driver's seat. Even if he's rebuilding his image, he's not going somewhere without a 2nd guy that forms a core that a championship team can be built around.
I agree that he must not come at the expense of a 2nd Star.
DJ
Durant
Zion
Kawhii
DSjr
Robinson
Knox
Trier
Vonleh
Dotson
Frank
Kornet
Thats a pretty good team. Vonleh and DJ will be tough given the cap situation but got to make the effort to make it happen.
The team would have Rim protection and perimeter D and a ton of scoring options. Only thing lacking would be a bona fide shooter. Dotson is just not there

That is a very good team but unfortunately not a realistic one, there really isn't a way for us to fit Durant, Kawhi, and Jordan and keep the rest of those guys and like some have mentioned he's not good enough to severely limit the rest of our roster flexibility and construction.
I also don't think DSJ would be a fit for that group, or really with any 2 max FA's. This is a guy that was unhappy about Doncic being the focal point of that offense even though he's way better. If the offense was run right with that group, he'd maybe be the 4th option at best. That team would need a selfless player at PG. But the good news there is I think that would be relatively easy to find. It would be a great day if filling that hole with the rest of a roster like that is our biggest problem.
