Knicks · is it a must we spend all 70 million on two players?? (page 1)

dacash @ 4/2/2019 11:26 AM
Spending all that money on only kd and kyrie, would the the only home run we could make?
would kawai who could get 30-32 , dj,who could get 9-11, a pg like rubio 20 or kemba 25 and trade a few of the young guys for beal ; like dsj, frankie heck knox any one but mitch
even at the higher scale that would still leave a good amt for a bench to go with them.?
Vmart @ 4/2/2019 12:12 PM
The way I see it going down. The Knicks will not land a top FA. Once again they will be using the cash on lower tier players.
KnickDanger @ 4/2/2019 12:27 PM
I am against the two max philosophy. I would prefer to build through the draft, young FA's, smart trades. Start developing players for God's sake. Not doing the same old s#!t. I know that won't happen. ADHD fans and a media of snakes and weasels wouldn't allow it.

Believe I heard Perry say that they will not make a splash in free agency just to make a splash. As previous Knicks regimes have done. The temptation will be there. Would rather see the Knicks sort out the bench, build the foundation for a contender, than overpriced retreads, frequently injured players.

"Lower tier" players are fine as long as they arent paid like stars. One max contract on a legit star in his prime would be fine with me. Bring back Jordan, keep mentoring the bigs.

If we draft Zion, Im guessing that it will be easier to attract A-list talent.

fitzfarm @ 4/2/2019 12:39 PM
I think it all depends on the draft, I really hope we don’t panic if we strike out on top free agents. If we do strike out on the likes of Durant & KL

Hopeful we:
Don’t max kyrie to injury prone
Don’t match mudiay, he’s too flawed and a terrible defensive player.
Don’t give up on the youth for a band aid win now team.

We should all be excited for the pairing of:

Mitch and Zion
Mitch and Ja
Mitch and Barrett

Any big free agent is icing on the cake.

New draft lottery odds system makes it very difficult to build through the draft now- see how bad we've been this year, all the losses and then think we have almost a 50% chance of ending up with the 5th pick!

knicks1248 @ 4/2/2019 12:53 PM
Phil had 28 mill, good for 1 star player, but he ended up dividing between Noah, AA, KOQ, and DWILL, and you seen how that turned out.

If they don't come out of FA with 2 major players, or a top 3 pick..Then that would make this season a complete waist like no other.

Aside from that, FIZ is not the coach to take a half decent roster and take them to the next level, he practically needs an all star roster to make him look like an avg coach

Cartman718 @ 4/2/2019 1:02 PM
I really doubt we will use it on lower tier players @vmart
Perry is too smart for that. Either he hits a home run in draft AND FA or he continues to rebuild through draft alone
dacash @ 4/2/2019 1:04 PM
i just do not depleting the team for two guys for the next 5 years. i read a post from knicks film school that said something along the lines of if we strike out on free agency getting other teams garbage contracts that expire within two years attached with draft picks might be the way to go: like gallinari on the clips or parsons get them while developing the youth and getting draft pics.
but to just sign two guys and not have much more especially when kyrie is injured alot.

Reports seem to indicate Leonard is off the table, so I'm no not counting on him at all. It that's the case, then you're looking at a Tobias Harris type along with Rubio or Kemba. If that's the case, I'd rather try for the homerun of the double Ks or stay with the youth movement. Even if Zion is in the picture.

This is what my gut is telling me as well (although I would not be surprised if they DO land K.Irving but that's it).

I wouldn't be surprised if they target J.Randle or T.Harris and try to land one of them, if not, both.

I think there are going to be a lot of surprises during free agency but none involving the Knicks (or Lakers). I have a feeling Durant will head to the Clippers and Leonard stays in Toronto. I would be surprised if Kemba leaves Charlotte.

I do seeing the Knicks going "all in" on trying to acquire A.Davis if they strike out on Durant.

jrodmc @ 4/2/2019 2:37 PM
Agree with Cartman; Perry should target Durant or AD or just save the money.

Would love Kawai's D, but he's a headcase.
Everyone else is close to being a defensive liability, which Mitch is not going to be able to cover for. He can't block everyone.

Rubio? He probably couldn't guard most of the posters on this site. Okay, maybe that's a bit overboard, but...

rubio is known for his defense, he is just not a great shooter

Attempt to eat Whiteside and Dragic's expirings from the Heat.

Would give the Knicks 2 needed veteran players that can help in the short term while keeping the cap clean. Would get the Heat out of the lux tax. Free up the mins for Bam. They can target PG of the future at the draft.

Knicks would still have 20+ mil to play with. Which they can throw at say Milsap or Ariza in a one year deal depending on who is drafted.

Would turn into a deep team with mixed savy vets and youngins.

Smith/Dragic, Mitch/Whiteside, Knox/Ariza

Knixkik @ 4/2/2019 4:43 PM
I think if we get Durant we will use the rest of the money even if its not on another max FA. If Kyrie decides to stay put for example, the Knicks may elect not to offer guys like Butler or MIddleton the max and may opt to resign D Jordan and someone like Rubio or another pair of starting caliber vets to surround KD with the right combination of young talent and high-caliber vets.

We can do both. Signing KD and Irving doesn't prevent us from developing Knox, Robinson, our 2019 1st round pick, etc. They best teams can develop young talent and compete with good vets simultaneously.

Rubio is one of the better defensive guards in the league.

If we draft Ja, I can see us signing Durant and Butler or Klay. That would work out great. Then we can hope and pray Mitch continues to develop or even takes a jump. Or we can resign DeAndre and hope Butler does not not the max.

fishmike @ 4/2/2019 4:56 PM
we sign whoever KD wants us to sign
Chandler @ 4/2/2019 5:03 PM
If we're smart, we should be paying max money for guys who are worth more than max.
The only deals in the NBA are:

1) superstars who play above their contracts, everyone knows it, but they're limited to max per CBA
2) players on rookie deals who can contribute
3) some type of a resuscitation project where you get a player who was buried on the bench, or didn't fit into his prior system -- i.e., you see value where the prior team did not. The problem is that these guys are usually lower tier and not all that impactful anyway

The idea that you're going to get a bargain in FA other than from a max is very suspect. For non-superstars, it's far more likely they'll get paid a fair rate or overpaid. When you overpay for talent you are handicapped in NBA because of the salary cap. You need bargains and 1 and 2 are the best opportunities for that

People's opinions on which superstar to sign will differ. I like KD but it's not without risk given his age and how much the rest of our roster stinks. We will not be that good next year even with additions. What will KD be like in 3 or 4 years??? Kyrie worries me because he misses so many games and when you start figuring what he gets paid for game played it's scary. he can also be a bit of a cuckoo bird and rub people the wrong way. I Like Kawhi but he too has injury risk

It would also be easier to decide if we had an idea of what brand of basketball we expect to play on O or D

fishmike wrote:we sign whoever KD wants us to sign

While agree with you. You would first have to get KD on board. How do you plan on doing so when other teams will have room for him as well. Are the Knicks gonna sell the team or NYC. Honestly they both leave a lot to be desired. Knicks suck and NYC isn’t really a destination the top tier FAs covet, probably more to do with the mob mentality of the media.
