Knicks · is it a must we spend all 70 million on two players?? (page 3)

Building though the draft has become next to impossible with the changes to the lottery. Look at the players we got in the last 2 drafts Knox and Frank are 2 of the worst players on the league. They have to come a long way to go just to be average NBA players. If you can get stars for just cap space you do it.

If you have been reading the tea leaves these last few weeks, there have been rumors that Kevin Durant will join the New York Knicks this summer. On Wednesday, Bleacher Report's Ric Bucher appeared on FS1's The Herd with Colin Cowherd where he asserts that further speculation regarding Durant's future isn't necessary because it's a "done" deal.

Bucher's comments come after Bleacher Report's Howard Beck not only mentioned in a piece published earlier today that Durant was bound for the Knicks, but his good friend Kyrie Irving would "likely" join him. "Rival executives will tell you, without hesitation, that Durant is bound for the Knicks; that Irving is likely to join him," Beck wrote.

Within Bucher's commentary about Durant's rumored departure is this observation that despite being the NBA Finals MVP these last two seasons, KD has never felt welcomed by the team throughout their back-to-back title runs. If Durant wants to solidify his legacy, he can do it by joining a Knicks franchise and fan base that has been thirsting for just a modicum of success.Bucher believes that an Eastern Conference Finals appearance with the Knicks can supersede anything he has accomplished in The Bay with the Warriors. It's currently a low bar over in New York, but it's certainly attainable for KD.

When it's done - the cupboard may again be bare and we'll have to do this all over again. Can't we add one max guy and resist going after AD or another max guy that's already 30 and/or has injury history. I get Kawhi is not likely to come - but he fits the bill of what we should be spending such a high percentage of our cap on (2 way player, under 30). If we get Zion or Ja we can keep Mitch and build around 2-3 young players with a really good max vet. If KD wants to play with that - great! If not, it won't end up working unless we gut the roster - so don't bother. Can't think I'm one of the only ones that don't want to lose Mitch, possibly Zion and future picks for a shot at winning for 2-3 years? I'm warming up to Kris Middleton if Kyrie is part of the KD package.
kinda what I would like - if KD comes, add him, our draft pick - hopefully top 3. And try to keep everyone else and just tuck in where upgrades are possible.
I'd like to think that KD, our draft pick and most of our guys back and integrated with a KD and his ability to lead, that we'd be competitive and in the bottom 4 of the play offs next season.

Everybody's window is 3 yrs, the only guys getting long term contracts above 3 yrs are rookies signing max extensions..
You have a 3 yr window no matter what route you take, how many players on the knicks roster that has been here more than 3 yrs in the last decade, other then melo, lance and amare, and we have had of 100+ players

Exactly. We needed to rebuild and I'm glad we've taken a steady, strategic view on the process. But, at the end of the day, we need to realize that we need to give to get. I was one of those guys that refused to give up Landry Fields in a Melo deal. I'm sure there were Celtics fan that refused to give up Gerald Green in a Garnett deal. I'm hoping our young guys develop. But there are a list of talented guys who don't pan out. If we're lucky enough to push things up with Kyrie and Durant, we kinda have to do it. Durant is a legit top 5 guy. Kyrie is a legit top 20. In the unlikely event we have a shot at AD, I think we have to pull the trigger. We finally have some assets. I'm not saying we blow them for Tobias Harris and Kemba, but we definitely need to be ready to pull the trigger.

Boucher also said Bosh and Lebron to the Bulls was a “done deal” back in 2010 so proceed with caution!
I don't like Knox (so far he's a chucker), Frank hasn't shown much of anything and not sold that Dennis Smith Jr has enough maturity to turn into a very good starting point... that said, Dotson, Mitch, Trier (to some extent) all have some potential, and hopefully I'm wrong about Knox and some of the other young guys. I'm all for swinging on a big FA with certain criteria (under 30, not injury prone, don't have to get rid of all young talent to obtain), and even ok with bending for a KD. Just not for a Kyrie, JButler, Kemba caliber player. Also think 2 max guys is better to round out a bench then 3 max guys and bare cupboard.
If we are lucky to draft Zion you keep him and don't turn him around for AD and lose Mitch, Knox and future picks. It certainly didn't work out when we similarly gave up young talent for Melo. Those arguing that we didn't lose any great players are correct - but we did lose roster flexibility, cap space and took on some dead weight (Sheldon Williams, Anthony Carter)... Gallo and Wilson Chandler had some value and could have been moved to retool the roster the next year - after it was clear that Melo and Amare and Tyson weren't a great fit together.
Basically, don't put all your eggs in one basket every time a FA smiles at you... Especially when some of the eggs are getting old, slightly cracked and you own a chicken that can lay new ones...
jskinny35 wrote:It's bs to say you can't rebuild through the draft when the world champs did it and have been sustaining for the past 5-6 years. Of course you have to draft well and I'm not comparing Klay, Dray and Steph to Frank, Knox and DSjr... I really don't think we should give up Mitch for any center/big - he's young, showing a great deal of promise and costs so little. While AD is clearly better, we could potentially have Zion, Mitch and the rest of the young guys that may develop further. Is it not a sure thing we win a chip with 3 max guys, when 1 is injury prone, 1 is already 30 and built like a praying mantis and the other one (AD) seems to have nagging injuries as well?I don't like Knox (so far he's a chucker), Frank hasn't shown much of anything and not sold that Dennis Smith Jr has enough maturity to turn into a very good starting point... that said, Dotson, Mitch, Trier (to some extent) all have some potential, and hopefully I'm wrong about Knox and some of the other young guys. You can make a case that AD is already better than KD. Everycase is different. Boston cashed in all their chips and I worked. Then you have the Nets situation lol We might have effed up with Melo. I don't know everything that happened behind the scenes, but it sounds like Dolan made us jump the gun. But I can also argue that Melo was never as good as AD and KD are right now. It's a tough choice to make. We have to wait until a few cards slid into place. But we definitely need to consider AD if Kyrie and Durant are in place. That's when the clock starts ticking. I'm not going ven sure if AD is a possibility anyway.

SCREAMIN A SMITH is hated for those reasons, as well as he always speaks out of his butt on topics he doesn't understand. Take this headline for example:
No, Stephen A. Smith, Redskins punter Tress Way did not start a game at quarterback

Durant leaving a better situation in GS just to play second fiddle to LeBron and help LeBron to the finals? Whaaaat? No one should waste time wondering about that
If he leaves, one of the reasons stated is that Durant wants his own team and the recognition/adulation that goes with it; GS is Steph’s team.

Maybe you should have spent more time thinking about the question. Might have written something more intelligent, for a change.
My point was that with LeBron missing the playoffs, Durant (with his rings) wouldn't be going to LA to be LeBron's sidekick. He would be going at this stage in his career as LeBron's equal.
LeBron needs Durant more at this point than the other way around. Durant knows that. That, and a good chance at another ring,.could appeal to Durant.

If Durant went to LA, he'd have to be a full time Stretch 5. They have no centers and the money crunch would limit their options. He'd have to eat nearly all the rim protection responsibilities as well. He'd take massive damage, shorten his career and be forced into a spot up shooter role ( albeit a supercharged one)
Would he do that? Maybe. The other problem is LBJ has a rep. When his teams are doing badly, the media suddenly starts shitting on his next level type team mate ( Love and Bosh for example) to deflect criticism off of LBJ. You think Durant wants it like this?

For every journalist that deflects criticism from LeBron, there are an equal number of them who lay way too much blame on LeBron. Skip Bayless owes his career to Lebron and the Hate he gives, Rob Parker, Seth Greenberg, Jason Whitlock, and a certain UK poster just to mane a few.

Not a good look walking to center court in preseason, and telling Boston fans you're signing a long term deal. That is if you end up going somewhere else.
If they did the Superfriends thing in LA, that draft pick (if it isnt Zion) and Lonzo Ball, might be available.
Lonzo's father is finally being sidelined. He's moving on to promote his other kid. Ball has excellent court vision, he will keep the ball moving. Good in halfcourt. If we did draft Morant, thats one player I wouldn't mind trying at the 2, filling in at PG.
Smith jr would be the perfect backup for Irving. Help keep Irving's minutes down
