Pop: "Only fitting, after I served loyally for 19 years as Tim Duncan’s assistant, that he returns the favor"

How good is this?

People don’t give Pop enough credit for how funny he is.

Funny, timmy said he'd never coach these guys but here he is.
Im sure he has thought this thru and might have the fire in the belly to do it. Fans usually think great players would be great. As if timmy has to just say "hey, Im Timmy F'n Duncan and If I say do it, you should!" Then do the stare thing he does. Remember Magic? He just thinks being magic is enough to coach or be president.
We all like Timmy and no doubt his 19 years has to have a huge benefit to any organization. Curious if this is a path to him being head coach some day.

I figured he was just bored of home life

Coaching is a profession very much different from playing, or managing, or doing anything else around professional sports.
If someone know how to write application code it does not mean he has any proficiency in Quality assurance or system administration, or can became a CIO.
Knowing the IT in general does not make person a professional in any of IT areas.
Same for pro sports.
Being a player of high intelligence of course helps to get into coaching and having a mentor like Pop is simple unmatched.
But then it is all up to Tim to start over and get at it as a rookie again and clime the ladder like nothing happened in the past.
Works better for point guards but there are some used to be top forwards in the ranks.
I will not be surprised if he will make it. Very capable individual.

Wish NY would have done this with EWING

Of course you do. Ewing on the bench on a struggling team would have fans clamoring for him to be head coach because he is Patrick Freaking Chewing!
Look at what SAS is doing? POP has 5 rings, HOF and very secure. Ewing has shown no NBA head coaching chops to anyone and never got a gig. Your a starphucher so you think Ewing as head coach would be a good idea. Then you have a public relations nighmare when it falls apart.
When specifically should the knicks have done this? Under which coach? Isiah? Brown? MDA? Woodson? Fisher? Horny?
Other than he is Ewing, what attributes make him distinctive to warrant that? You bring him as assistant or head coach?

EWING should have had some kind of role in this organization...karma

Pat is not a man for "some kind of a role".
He have to be The Man or be elsewhere.
This how he was as a player and how he will always be as a coach and as a man.

I didn't get the sense that Pat was in the same position Oakley was in. I think MSG would've brought Pat back in some capacity, but he wanted more.

Karma? I think it bit everyone in the arse. Legend is Don Nelson thought we could have gotten a trade for Shag and kept him. He thought Ewing’s best days were behind him and the future was uptemp.
Karma. WE kept Ewing and it proved to be a disaster.
Karma. We got it.
He was offered to be head coach at Westchester. I understand why he would turn it down, but if the man was hell bent on doing this he could have taken it. 29 other teams did not hire him or promote him to head coach. Can’t coach a kid to be a warrior. I admire the guy for sticking it out as an assistant. Love the guy. Wish him well.

Who cares. Is Pat on the bench for the Knicks yet?
