Knicks · Rebuild progress (page 1)
At the start of year 2 of rebuild as far as players we get long term we have Barrett, Mitch, and Knox.
2 projected starters (C and SG/SF) and projected backup SF/PF.
Just at the pace of getting roster build I expected.
At the moment I do not see anybody else on the roster as sure part of the future.
We have some may-be projects in Frank, Dot, Iggy, and Trier but non of them made it clear yet that they are the keepers.
From the veteran bunch we get I cannot see anyone worth keeping long term due to talent and/or age window.
I have a feeling that re-build will be a long project rather that quick fix which is good thing in my opinion.
But his luck of height, defense, and ball handling are serious limitations for modern NBA starter at PF.
Projecting him as backup a couple of years after resigning him is obviously not a good idea.
We will be able to find less expensive and more skill-specific player. Its a lot of this type of players always available.
So I would rather use him as pure inside scoring PF who can make occasional perimeter shots when open and stop devalue him by putting him in point-forward position.
He get exposed and his value will be severely reduced. We need his as asset in future trades.

Real PG is realistic only after next draft or after dead line trades if anything close to real PG will be available in both.
So Randle need to go back of doing ONLY things he is good at.
Comparing to Randle Zack was a monster. Much bigger, taller, stronger, and skilled player playing in another era. Era of dominating big man down low.
At Zack times Randle will be end-of-the bench 3rd string big.
He is borderline starter in today's NBA only because of his outside game.

It is no problem at all to take a risk on players with possible upside in rebuilding situation.
But it is fine line between figuring out what player can become and maintaining his trade value.

I think Zack was more skilled and fundamentally advanced. We talking about 25 year old Randle to Zach who really did get better the fatter and slower he got. Randle is more athletic and explosive. Zach had that old timey creeky knee Willis Reed/Paul Silas kind of talent. Thats a compliment.

Efficiency is the name of the game. Especially in today data driven NBA.
At the top of his carrier Zack did only what he knew he does best.
When he was going crazy and start shooting 3th and long 2th he was miserable and pathetic (under Isiah watch

But he learned to drop this b/s and became very valuable at the end of his NBA stint.
This is based on what rebuilding coach work with somewhat established players should be evaluated on.
The ability to force players use their best skills and became more efficient.

I have to agree with your assessment. This rebuild is a wacky rebuild the Knicks always try to emulate a successful model. Right now they are trying to emulate the Celtic model. Vets infused with young players. Unfortunately the Knicks aren’t prioritizing youth movement but catering to their vets. They pulled Robinson out of the lineup so they can feature Randle sacrificing what has kept the team in games which is defense for offense. Every time Fizdale has done this it has back fired on him in blowout fashion.
Prioritization of youth movement should be the goal and it should be the goal going forward. If you cater to the Randles, Morris and Portis Managemet and Fizdale are pretty much shooting them selves in the foot. This is a sure fire way to get the boot. We have two promising players that figure to be starters for a long time. RJ is going to make a couple of All Star teams, but isn’t a franchise player.
We have two nice bench pieces in the 7th and 8th spots in Frank and Dotson and a wildcard in Knox. He just doesn’t seem to use his body correctly at his size with that reach and athletics match he should be better around the rim and his footwork and motor are weak.
Organizationally we are unbelievably weak. A bottom two owner, an unproven front office and a coach who hasn’t shown he is capable of installing an offense or finding rotations.
Our biggest need this offseason was point guard, so why did we sign four forwards? Rubio at two years made a lot more sense than giving Ellington, Bullock and Portis, 36MM a year. Honestly, would have made more sense to keep Vonleh and Mario for $6MM a year, with a real point guard and not create such a mess with zero spacing.
The front office is as important as our rebuilding pieces because right now they are falling way short.

This is not a laid back town like LA. The only FAs that are going to come are lower tier players hence the Randles and Morris of the world. Before that it was a broken Amar’e who no one wanted to give big money to.
The youth movement has to be the priority only because they are under contract and it’s the best bet to get a franchise player because the Knicks sure as hell won’t get that through FA. It’s time for some of the NYK fans to get real about the Knicks and NYC it is not a destination for top tier FAs.

I have to agree with your assessment. This rebuild is a wacky rebuild the Knicks always try to emulate a successful model. Right now they are trying to emulate the Celtic model. Vets infused with young players. Unfortunately the Knicks aren’t prioritizing youth movement but catering to their vets. They pulled Robinson out of the lineup so they can feature Randle sacrificing what has kept the team in games which is defense for offense. Every time Fizdale has done this it has back fired on him in blowout fashion.
Prioritization of youth movement should be the goal and it should be the goal going forward. If you cater to the Randles, Morris and Portis Managemet and Fizdale are pretty much shooting them selves in the foot. This is a sure fire way to get the boot. Save your jobs and play the young players. MR has a much higher ceiling than Randle and Knox has a much higher ceiling than Morris. Management and Fizdale aren’t to bright they should already know you ain’t make the playoffs with Morris and Randle.
They prioritize the youth movement last seasons and won 17 games and called it a tank..
You really think it would be a good look for Fizdale to bench his vets to play below avg young players, and you think that will attract FA and give us stability..

First and foremost you have to get the notion of free agents out of your head. Top tier FAs are not gonna go to NYK. The pressure is to tense and that is why they run away from it. This is not a laid back town like LA. The only FAs that are going to come are lower tier players hence the Randles and Morris of the world. Before that it was a broken Amar’e who no one wanted to give big money to.
The youth movement has to be the priority only because they are under contract and it’s the best bet to get a franchise player because the Knicks sure as hell won’t get that through FA. It’s time for some of the NYK fans to get real about the Knicks and NYC it is not a destination for top tier FAs.

The Nets have been operating well from management to coaching. Knicks are just the opposite the management grasps at straws. Thinking all the wrong ways to lure Free agents. From hiring friend to color of skin. That is no way for an organization to function. Just not a good look. Acts of desperation at best.

Can you really say conclusively that RJ isn't a franchise player? He's 19 years old (should be a college fresh had he not re-classified ) and is already our best player. His weaknesses of shooting and elite athleticism are probably the reason you say that, but his bball IQ and work ethic will probably keep him improving from what is an unprecedented year for a 19 year old. What's the hardest thing in the league to find, and best thing to build around? Not a PG or a big. A 2-way playmaking wing.

Everybody agree that we have only 3 sure keepers.
So how team which needs 7-8 more rotation players can not drastically change?
It is possible somebody else will stick around. But it a maybe.
So with Fiz or without we have a long way from being any good and even God cannot speed it up.
