Something worth noting on the trade deadline: Several teams in touch with the Knicks recently came away with the impression that they aren't solely focused on acquiring draft picks, expiring contracts or young players who have struggled with other teams in trades.

Those teams say the Knicks have shown an interest in acquiring starter-level players who can help the team in the short-term and in future seasons, per sources.

That's interesting to note because the Knicks are 10-27, tied for the third-worst record in the NBA, and the front office faces a tenuous future because of the team's poor play.

As we've noted before, teams have expressed interest in Dennis Smith Jr., Marcus Morris and Bobby Portis. The Knicks surely have had conversations about several other players as well. The Timberwolves are among the teams who have expressed interest in Smith Jr. The New York Post reported that the Sixers are monitoring Morris' market. Opposing teams expect both teams in Los Angeles to also keep an eye on Morris.

Another factor in any Morris deal? Some members of the Knicks organization believe Morris has long-term value with the club, SNY sources say. They have been impressed by his play and his leadership during the season and see him as a valuable player on the team they're hoping to rebuild.

Like their approach. Of course that is the proper narrative to put out in order to get highest value for a guy like Morris. Would not be very smart to put out that they just want what ever draft pick they can get and by minimizing Morris's worth to us. Will be interesting to see what happens with Morris.

Feel Taj and Portis are the only two that should be traded for draft pieces. As they are not long term pieces or on team friendly deals. Portis's value is pretty high and Taj is what it has been the last couple of years. Also think their level of contribution can be replaced by other lower cost options.

once burned, twice shy

would be a PR nightmare if they touted a strategy of moving players and got zilch

Hmmm, wonder if we’re trying to get bogdanovic from the Kings. He and Montrezl Harrell are the only two fa’s I’m interested in considering.

They have already went the fire sale route on 3 of the last 4 seasons, and it's made matters worse

They don't have any bad contracts to get rid off, nobody is hell bent on getting off the team, or requesting a trade, they have all of their draft pick plus some.

No way in hell do the knicks give up morris for no late first round pick, he brings too much to the table to trade him for some possible project who doesn't bring 1/10th of what he does.

I said in another thread, that the knicks are looking for players that will make them better now, and in the future, guys on Randle and morris level...ITS about time.

It's bad enough trading guys that really wanted to be here but couldn't take the losing, now you want to trade another good player who wants to be here and accepts the losing as a process...what does that say to FA?

I'm with you on Bog. Don't really see Harrell fitting in on this team as constituted now.

Harrell only if we ended up shedding Portis, Randle, taj etc

You don't like Randle?

why trade fwds for other fwds..

Why not trade for pg's or sg's, an area we are struggling with

franco12 @ 1/8/2020 2:43 PM
I don't trade Morris. I would ask him, but he seems to want to be here - that is great!

He is one of our leaders, one of the top scorers and our best outside shooter.

Would we even win a game if we traded him for picks the rest of the way?

I don't see the point in keeping this together. I believe there's more to gain by freeing up minutes for our young guys. We need for them to either develop or we need to figure out if we should move on from them

We need to stop having so many inefficient volume scorers who don’t defend and start bringing in efficient players who are defensive menaces

if Morris wants to be here, sign the extension now. Otherwise, trade him for a pick.

We are the New York Knicks. Not the New York Morris.

This. This is the type of FA we have been waiting for. One of few that actually want to be here. Would be a easier decision if he was a couple years younger. Still think we try to keep him on a short deal instead of adding an expiring, second rounder or late first. We know how dependable those are.

I like Morris but I don’t like him and Randle together, if you can’t move Randle then unfortunately you have to move Morris (I’d rather keep Morris and move him to PF)

anrst @ 1/8/2020 5:34 PM
we need better self esteem as an organization than this. morris will be 31 at the start of next year. this is the best he is going to be right now. now is when you sell!

it's so obvious.

oh, but he's a leader, and he likes us, he really likes us

come the F on

trade this old man.

the unproven late first rounder is more valuable to the organization that the also unproven future performance of an aging marcus morris who might not even resign with us at the end of this year!!!!!!!!!

have some pride, knicks. trade that man away.

I don't think so. I think you could make Randle a 6th man.

I posted this elsewhere, and it's why there is a need to have veteran talent and leadership to help develop young players. Certainly, there is a lot that a young player can do on his own, but unless they are an exceptional talent like Lebron, they need someone to show them 'how to do it'.

https://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baske...

Apparently, Robinson was still salty about getting romped by his teammates in scrimmages the day prior in practice. He said it became motivation to bury the Blazers since his opportunity for revenge at practice was over.

“We played multiple games and they was kicking our ass all day [Tuesday],” Robinson said. “And it was a practice day. So we had to take an ass kicking and go home.”

It wasn’t just the scrimmage defeats that burned Robinson. It was the trash talking.

“They bust our ass. So I was kind of mad because they was talking s--- after,” Robinson said. “So I was like, I’m not going to let that happen again. And then I came in the game and just dominated.”

Knicks forward Marcus Morris confirmed his team — the starters — worked Robinson and the reserves in practice.

“We kicked their ass. But that’s the competitive nature and it’s getting better for us,” he said. “We go in, we damn near kick their ass every day. But they play hard. Like I told him during the game, he’s becoming a hell of a player in this league. I’m excited to be a part of his career.”

I'm not trading Morris. I'm not going to say I hope we don't lose a fair number of games, and up with a shot at a top 5 pick. The worst thing that could happen is we end up with Jordan Hill instead of Stephen Curry.

But, we need guys like Knox, Frank, Mitchel, RJ to learn how to win, to learn what it takes to compete night in, night out.

And we need players like Morris to do that, both in terms of their on court contribution, and what they do in the locker room.

GustavBahler @ 1/9/2020 9:52 AM
Believe mgmt is realizing that cap room alone isnt enough to attract top FAs. This front office doesnt have the track record of a contender. Might be following the "if you build it they will come" strategy.

Trade for a star(s), build a supporting cast, and hope its enough down the road (like summer 2021) to attract at least one big time FA.

And you wonder why no FA wants to come here, you wonder why the development is almost no existent.

Seems like we have traded our best players every season.

The knicks haven't moved up in the first round in any lottery since forever..and even if we do, are you so sure will pick the right player, cause that hasn't always been the case

I like Morris he is the type of FA you want, but we signed him to a one year deal. After the season ends he shops himself for the best deal. If we manage to retain him, and that's a big if, it's going to be at a high cost and he's a piece of the puzzle type of guy not a top dog. If we trade him we get a pick and still have the money to sign FAs.

I hate that we are in rebuild mode every year, but we are and we will be until we get it right. I'm not going to complain if they keep him, but I don't think hanging unto a rental when we are so many pieces short is the right decision.

MS @ 1/9/2020 11:03 AM
Hopefully this is some PR fluff to extract the best offer.

Hanging onto Morris makes absolutely no sense. He's playing at the highest level of his career, better than he ever has and he is going to be 31. He doesn't fit the timeline here. Play the LA teams against each other. There are three teams in the east that could use him as well. We need assets now. Need to get second round picks for Bullock and Ellington too. Clean house, get another top three pick and finish with the worst record. You still have one more season to show progress.

Again if we were going to spend money on players this offseason, DLO and Jeremy Lamb were two guys they should have targeted that fit into a rebuilding scenario because both are young and have trade value. It's mind blowing the warriors were able to pull that off.

The reason we are where we are is because we don't usually sell and fall out of the top five. Missing out on guys like Fox, Luka, Young etc. We have the team to secure the worst record in the league, let's just execute for once.
