Knicks · Leon Rose? (page 4)

BillTheButcher @ 2/6/2020 11:23 AM
I don't know how to feel about this , I wanted someone with experience in building a winning franchise .We have stunk for like 3 decades not sure if now was the time to try this "out of the box" approach.I hope it works out because despite what you say about Dolan the man is loyal AF, if this guy stinks he will be around at least 5 years longer than he needs to be.
newyorknewyork @ 2/6/2020 11:26 AM
We needed dudes that move like Tim Connelly and Art Karnisovas from Denver. Everything is sound from drafting, developing, signing FAs, retaining their players with solid deals, trades. And they continue to flip the excess to keep it moving. That move they just involved themselves in to flip Beasley who is solid and Hernangomez for Bates Diop and future first will prove to be another good move in a long line of them.

He has a proven track record of negotiating great deals.

For his players. Now try that from an team perspective it’s gonna be a whole lot different to negotiate a fair deal. Another bad hire the old lets use the connections game. It has never worked out for the Knicks.

He knows how to negotiate. He knows how the game is played. He's an insider. He has contacts all over.

I'm giving him a chance. You guys are doing the media thing "oh this is so the knicks.... oh dolan...."

CAA has had a long history of influencing the Knicks with results that ending up with us giving up lottery picks for Andrea Bargnani. You telling me using those picks for Majiri wouldn't have been a better?

This is like saying you don't want a certain player on your team because he always kills the Knicks.
If you're telling me we hired a guy who used to screw us over then i'm good with that because he's our guy now and he'll screw others over.

No, this is like saying let's promote the consigliere who always gave us crap advice and make him head of the family. Nothing really good has come from this relationship.

Sambakick @ 2/6/2020 11:33 AM
Everyone talking about how CAA has all this influence.

What if he INFLUENCES a guy like Oladipo, Embiid, or Devin Booker when any of them become sick of their situation?

He negotiates great deals for players. They, in turn, love the guy. Who loved Mills?

Chandler @ 2/6/2020 11:35 AM
Ok. I already said why i don't like the idea of an agent-turned-GM

Dolan didn't listen

Now Rose colored glasses are on [pun-intended]:

Having a president do president stuff, not GM stuff, is a good thing. So I'm hoping Rose can do the president stuff, and if he's connected in knowing whose "playing" versus "just saying" then that's good.

Rose colored glasses still on: Perry will be good w drafting and Roster and being a basketball guy. Maybe Blatt helps?

Rose colored glasses off: where's the whiskey?

djsunyc @ 2/6/2020 11:36 AM
the thinking here is quite simple - hire an agent to run the team b/c he may have the in to attract bigger name players to the franchise.

team building, scouting, etc - all of that is an unknown.

on a personal note - masai still a raptor :) :) :) :)

excellent post. I posted the other day querying if anyone even knew the Denver GM -- who has been awesome. I would have preferred someone similar; non-celebrity, all business and effective

Once upon a time that was supposed to be who Scott Layden was. We've gone for Celebrity ever since. Until General Mills.

One if the reasons Donnie Walsh left was because he felt undermined by the influence CAA had on Dolan...They were his acting advisors. They were also gifted Steve Mills.

Man, I guess when you are looking up from Mills and Isiah things look good.

How come I still don't feel excited?

because the head of the team isnt a basketball guy. He's a lawyer/agent wheeler and dealer. Maybe thats why.

Bob Myers, Rob Pelinka? Who knows what the right move would have been. I am still celebrating Mills being let go. Do know I did not like the idea of giving up one or 2 picks for you know who. However, would of been nice if Dolan's due diligence period was longer than a nights sleep.

At least this time it is more honest.
We were abused by CAA now we will be run by them.
Fans who like flushing and burning stars and per-retirement great character vets CAA owned too will be happy.
NY needs drama. It is not some freaking Oakland or San Antonio and NBA is not boring NHL.
Working hard and winning is not good enough. We need excitement.

So you are saying that now we will be fucked from within? So, business as usual?

Yeah, like the time we hired that charismatic all star point guard with no FO experience because we thought he would attract big name players to the franchise. Or that time we hired that Hall of Fame coach with no FO experience because we thought it would attract bigger names. This franchise is lost.
Chandler @ 2/6/2020 11:55 AM
there is no reason to think this was decided in the two days since Mills was fired.

this could have been in the pipe since the infamous press conference throwing Fizz under the buss, when supposedly everyone else was on notice

It could have been in the pipe when all the star FA didn't even visit

Mills may have been fired when he was because Dolan, and maybe Rose, thought Mills was ready to do something rash to save his ass. Reportedly Mills and Perry weren't seeing eye to eye on something. Maybe Rose likes Perry's eye for second round talent (this is actually a good thing -- most of the good teams find value here).

Allanfan20 @ 2/6/2020 11:58 AM
Not sure what I think about this. When I think of Leon Rose, I think of Eddie Curry. That’s all. Maybe he’ll be good. I have reservations though.

The last time the Knicks were any good all the important players came from CAA. also, the Warriors and Lakers hired former agents and I would trade our situation for theirs. This guy represented some of the best players alive. You do that by being able to sell and being able to identify young talent early. You don't make any money by representing someone AFTER they make their money. You get paid by representing talented players as soon as they're eligible. Then you hope they don't fire you before they sign their UFA deals. He could suck but even if he does I bet he is way better than Mills

Pelinka was nearly run out of town around the same time last year because of the dysfunction in LA. LeBron joined the Lakers because they are the best franchise in basketball. Also, Magic was the Prez at the time. I give most of the credit to LeBron and Paul for landing AD.
