Knicks · 2020 free agency, who would you sign? (page 1)

smackeddog @ 2/8/2020 2:51 PM
So, would you consider handing out contracts in 2020 instead of holding out until 2021?

Part of me is curious about signing Joe Harris (Nets) and Davis Bertrans (wiz). That would finally address our 3pt woes. Joe Harris plays SG/sf and shoots over 40% on 6 threes a game (shot 47% last year), and Betrans plays PF and shoots 43% on 8 threes a game.

That gives us 2 great role players to space the floor for RJ, Mitch and LaMelo if we drafted him. I think they’d also be tradeable further down the line if we ever needed to. For me, free agency is for adding role players at this stage, that help out the players we draft.

should go for Dragic, Dragic and Elfrid is a backcourt you can build on, then add a big name in 21
Knixkik @ 2/8/2020 5:20 PM
Depends on our draft obviously. If we draft a PG I’ll stick with that player and Payton handling the point and focus on a shooter like Joe Harris, Bogdanovic, Fournier or Bryn Forbes. Just thinking wing shooters who are 28 or younger. If we don’t draft a PG I think we would have to consider VanVleet. My focus is on fit with Barrett and that means adding quality shooters. Dragic is another stopgap option at PG.

Looking at Fournier's past comments about the Knicks, I don't think he's coming. I consider him a THJ level player anyway. Joe would cost us. I wouldn't mind paying Bogdanovic, but I'm pretty sure Sac is keeping him.

Yeah I agree about Fournier. I really like making a run at Harris. We just need shooters and he’s a top tier guy. Forbes is a good backup plan. Not a high level starter because of his size but very good high volume 3pt shooter. Only 26.

what about Fred VanFleet?

I don't know. If we get a guy in the draft it probably won't make sense to pay a guy like that, especially since he's not on this rosters timeline.

Every time I watch Vanvleet I am amazed at how clutch he is. He might be worth it.

unless you are picking Zion or Lebron, we won't know what kind of talent we have for a while.

And if you do get a strong PG, no harm in having two, being able to bring that rookie along slowly.

we really don't have a lot contracts committed. I think I make him my first call, and I offer everything I can.

I pitch him on how he can turn the franchise around- he's the perfect bridge between the talent developing (RJ, Mitchell) and our key vets like Randle (and a resigned Morris!)

Sambakick @ 2/8/2020 11:56 PM
Instead of deciding NOT TO pick up team options totalling 24mil on Ellington and Portis, we could choose to exercise the option then use them as ending deals in trades. That way it's not "Free Agency or bust". If there's no one coming here for straight cash homie then let's make a deal.

Wasn’t that what we tried last week with Portis?
He blood is coming in, a fresh outlook, but still need patience. Not everyone returns value. They came cheap, they leave cheap. We did very well with Morris!

The way the Knicks are managing their books, they will have ending deals in trades whether they keep those guys or not. Randle plus whomever they sign this summer on a 1 year deal.

TPercy @ 2/9/2020 3:09 PM
Shooters only.
GustavBahler @ 2/9/2020 5:07 PM
Id wait because anything can happen with players and teams between now and 2021, and there are a lot of good players in that FA class. Also gives a coach (hopefully Miller) time to establish an identity for the team. A season without trading your best player midseason. Which was the right call. Wouldnt rule 2020 out altogether, has to be really worth it to shoot our wad this summer.
smackeddog @ 2/10/2020 5:13 AM
These are our rivals:

These are the FA's:

https://hoopshype.com/2020/01/20/nba-fre...

Miami seem to be trying to preserve money for 2021, but I could see them going after shooting or maybe even Van Fleet.

I don't think anyone will want to sign with the Pistons unless they have to.

Atlanta will be a pain again- they can go after 3 point shooters or use the cap space to take back bad contract- an annoying competitor to have whatever we decide, probably the main competitor.

Charlotte might go after Drummond if he becomes a FA.

Knixkik @ 2/10/2020 10:40 AM
If we move Randle, Bertans should be the target. 27 year old knockdown stretch 4. It should be all about adding shooters around Barrett. I know he's a rookie and coming off injury, but the way he's being utilized is embarrassing. Trade Randle into Charlotte's cap space and commit adding the types of players who compliment Barrett and Robinson.

If we add a PG in the draft, we should keep Payton as his backup and offer a big contract to Bertans and with the SG position either start Bullock, or sign Harris or Forbes.

Chandler @ 2/10/2020 10:46 AM
After AD I'm not excited at all

Some enigmas in there, e.g., Otto Porter

If we buy, let's buy low. Also avoid reaches. We need a good mix of age and experience; get competitive, good-eggs

Haven't seen much of him play. How is his defense? Rebounding? Is a sure-fire starter?

No way Knicks are bringing back Portis, so Knicks will have a slot.

What type of contract you offering?

fishmike @ 2/10/2020 11:33 AM
I am sure we make a strong play for Ingram. I think we have something NO would be very interested in. A young SG who's best friends with Zion. I hate to lose RJ but I think the Knicks are going to try to make big things happen this offseason. To me that says Ingram as he's the one star we might be able to land. NO cant afford another Anthony Davis type setback. I think pairing Zion/Rj ensures those guys have something to stay for. Cant guarantee but its sound in principle when you consider how today's NBA players are

Just throwing poop on the wall:
Randle/RJ/Knicks 2020 FRP+Knicks or Dallas 2022 FRP) for Ingram (max contract)
Fred Van Fleet (max contract)
pick up options on Elf/Bullock/Ellington
decline option on Portis/Taj
Draft BPA w/ Clippers pick

PG Van Fleet
SG Ellington
SF Bullock
PF Ingram
C Mitch
bench: Frank/DSJr/Knox/Iggy/Elf/Wooten

I'm not saying "do this" but some likely more costly version of this is what I expect

His defense...he tries. Wizards fans think he'll get Randle money--or better and the Wizards seem content with that. We'd need a huge overpay to get Bertans, which I might consider if it meant getting rid of Randle at the end of the day.

Reasons why the Celtics failed to acquire the Washington Wizards forward emerged in reports Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix and The Boston Globe’s Adam Himmelsbach shared immediately after Thursday’s 3 p.m. ET NBA trade deadline had passed. The Celtics reportedly had targeted Bertans in recent weeks, but Washington’s determination to re-sign him in free agency was insurmountable, according to Mannix.
