Man, those Howard Eisley and Shandon Anderson contracts felt like they lasted for decades
2016-2019 Howard was an assistant coach with the knicks!! He never really left.
Took over for Herb, no idea who he handed the proverbial insider to

- trade Randle into charlottes cap space for a future 2nd round pick (we own most of them anyways)
- draft Cole Anthony, Hampton, or Haliburton with the top pick. Nwora with the clippers pick. Isaiah Joe with the high 2nd. Add shooters and playmakers.
- sign VanVleet for big money and overpay Jerami Grant on a 1 year deal at 15 mil.
- bring back Bullock and GibsonC Robinson
PF Grant
SF Barrett
SG Bullock
PG VanVleet
With our top pick as 6th manIn VanVleet and Grant we would be adding 2 26 year olds who play both sides of the both. VanVleet would split playmaking duties with Barrett and Grant is a 3&D PF. We instantly get more athletic, better shooter and would be a great defensive team. Basically surround Barrett, Mitch and VanVleet with shooters and defenders and maintain future max cap space and draft assets.
What’s yours?
For me, under this CBA you use the draft to land stars (either by drafting them or trading picks for them), and free agency for role players, so I'm using this free agency to sort out some role players for us.
C- Randle (until traded and Mitch replaces him)
PF- Davis Bertans
SF- Barrett
SG- Joe Harris
PG- LaMelo Ball/ Haliburton/ Hayes/ Cole (whoever is the best available)
Goodbye to Portis ASAP, also get rid of DSJ, Trier (because there's no way he'll re-sign after being benched the entire year), Ellington
Keep: Frank, Knox, Mitch, Dotson, bullock, Iggy, Kadeem Allen, Wooten, Taj (unless you can find a better vet PF/C)
Plus whoever we draft with our other 2 picks.
One thing this season taught me, you need a PG who makes things easier for other young players or you're going to struggle to develop them. Also you need premier 3 point shooting to space the floor for them, and again make things easier. This lineup also gives us a lot of flexibility and hopefully everyone is moveable if the right deal comes along.

In retrospect, maybe Howard wasn't so bad. He could hit a three and he didn't turn the ball over.
It was just depressing having those two on the team- felt we were stuck with them and would never have cap flexibility to sign a free agent.

Agree, wasnt them personally, they were decent role players. But damn were they paid, and for a long time.

It's just temporary until we ship out Randle at the trade deadline- hopefully by then his value has been pumped up by playing with all the 3 point spacing. Looking at this years free agency there's no particularly good defenders worth signing, but there are good 3 point shooters, and they usually have value on the trade market (unless they lose the ability to shoot upon stepping on MSG floor). Honestly, we're probably going to suck next year too. That's not a bad thing as 2021 draft is meant to be good- our high pick plus the Mavs, and hopefully we're ready to make big step forward then.

I dont mind the idea of getting shooters, as long as the contract is right. For me Bertans and Harris are role players at best, no idea if they are high level role players on a playoff team to warrant the type of contract needed to sign them away.
Mitch has to be good enough to be a starter next year or things aren't right either with him or the team.

Good post. Still not sold on Bertans and certainly not so as a starter or for big money, but the rest seems basically right. I would keep RJ as the 2 though because of his bully ball style against SGs
And I would consider keeping elfrid (not in your post). I wish the guy could shoot but i think he can have a vet role. I wouldn't cry if he left though either.
Mitch is coming alive lately!

I just had a Jose Calderon flashback. Forget which poster created that photoshop image of the red carpet and Jose as an usher. Super funny
If possible, flip Randle for Gallinari or a starting stretch 4 to better complement Mitch. Even K.Love is we can pick up a pick
Draft best player available - hopefully PG (but even if that is Wiseman and we have to figure out Center position w/Mitch)
Give Miller one full training camp and year to see what he can do - I think he's done well this year given mid-season change
RJ works off season on his jumpshot to improve consistency. RJ seems like a hard worker so I expect this to happen
Retain/resign and/or keep (reasonable deals) E.Payton, Taj, Bullock, Harkless, Dotson, Iggy, Kadeem Allen, (RJ, Mitch, Frank)
Drive to Airport and wish them well (eg don't resign or trade if possible) - D.Smith Jr, Knox, Portis, Trier, Ellington.
Perry should be retained ideally, but hopefully can be reassigned to assist new GM so we're not starting over blindly

Fox on rookie contract and there is no doubt SAC will extend him the max. He would be a RFA that year.
