NBA and NFL both spiking at the same time is no coincidence. Could this possibly be the new variant? It is said to be way more transmissible and antibody evading than even the delta.

Omicron is so spreadable it's ridiculous- not sure if the outbreaks in the nba are due to it, it could just be due to players not having they booster shots yet, so their vaccines effectiveness has naturally declined over time

It could be a lot of things with the NBA, and unless there is a note about someone being positive versus "in protocol" it could just be contact tracing. I'm guessing it was the case with Obi/RJ but not 100% sure, i.e. not wearing a mask within the vicinity of someone who did test positive.

I believe with the NBA they have to have 2 negative tests. Sounds like RJ & Obi have it, though may be asymptiomatic.

If it were just being exposed, they would take two tests, get negative and be cleared.

It's a bit more nuanced than that: https://www.nba.com/news/nba-establishes...

Urgh, I hate waiting for the info we need about this- cross everything it's less severe, but even if it is it's spreadability is so horrific (really don't see how it can be stopped or slowed down enough) things could get bad so quickly (better hope that means it's over pretty quickly too.

Even if omicron is less deadly it will be infecting people side by side with the delta. What I am worried about is the eventual person who is infected by both at the same time and how that might create new mutations. Our medical field can barely keep up with delta alone. When Omicron infection clog up the hospitals those delta people who get left out will die when in other situations they might have had a chance.

Apparently I am not the only one who fears dual infections.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article...

"Covid infections normally only involve one mutant strain, but in extremely rare cases two can strike at the same time.
If these also infect the same cell, they may be able to swap DNA and combine to make a new version of the virus."

The article says this has been rare with COVID since there is usually 1 dominant strain. However, with both the Delta and Omicron with such high transmissible rates its possible if outbreaks are left unchecked due to the high numbers of infected.

100%

Still feels like a lot of people don’t get what’s coming.

I know it’s the least of our problems, but Is the nba even planning anything? Don’t see how there isn’t major distruption/ stopping crowds again in a few weeks time

Clean @ 12/15/2021 4:22 PM

Notice he said first known. With how quickly these positive tests has started occurring once the new variant was discovered I have a feeling there is a lot more cases were we don't know is omicron.

The only hope is that this strain is so transmittable (the spread rates are ridiculous!) the whole wave happens ultra quickly and is over ultra quickly, so most of the population is infected and recovers within a month, reducing the time for a mutant strain to emerge and reducing the length of theme the health service is over capacity. Even so, that’s still a lot of deaths.

I think that many of the people who have gotten vaccinated are not as concerned anymore. And the people who never got vaccinated never cared in the first place.

That, plus the holidays and covid fatigue, is not a great recipe.

Definitely sleep walking into this, then again, I’m not exactly sure what you can do

smackeddog @ 12/15/2021 4:42 PM
Do get your boosters if/when you can folks!

"Omicron’s genetic traits bear more similarity to forms of the virus circulating last year than more recent strains, such as Beta and Delta. “It seems to have been hiding for a year,”

The most popular view among virologists is that it spent months mutating in an immunosuppressed person with a chronic infection. Other ideas include evolution accelerated by the use of anti-Covid drugs, and crossover into an animal species that later jumped back into humans.

A South African research team, which included Lessells, discovered an untreated HIV patient late last year who was infected with Covid-19 for more than six months and gave rise to a string of mutations that affected the spike protein, the part of the virus where most of Omicron’s adaptations are located. A UK study observed a similar process in a Covid patient with blood cancer.

The immune response of an untreated HIV patient would be “too weak to clear the virus but strong enough to drive the process of evolution”, explained Lessells. He said this process would allow coronavirus to mutate without being “picked up” as many of these patients are asymptomatic and therefore do not get tested."

Whoa, thanks for this

^ Do feel that the NBA and other pro sports mirror what is going to happen in the greater population to a certain degree.

It's coming folks. May have a ton less symptoms etc cause of the vaccine and nature of this particular strain, but buckle up.

Clean @ 12/16/2021 1:55 PM

It's was just discovered and its already 10% of all cases in NY/NJ. Crazy.

Just got boosted. I was planning on the first week of January, but the NBA actually made me decide to go sooner.
