Knicks · Would u give Christian Wood 3 years 66 mm (page 1)

BRIGGS @ 4/4/2020 11:45 AM
With a team option for a 4

To be our Pf

Only if I wanted to trash my career as a GM
Nalod @ 4/4/2020 11:53 AM
YOu would have 4 years ago.
Not sure I’d give him Randle type contract. Talent wise he has it. Randle is far from perfect but he is a healthy kid, seems to have a great presences and good locker room guy. Leader? Not really. Thats ok. The future is Barrett and either frank or the next up. Wood personality is a question mark. One I can’t answer so until then I say no. Cap is coming down and knick have good flex. I’d give him a two year deal, second team option if I can move Randle. But then depends on the coach. Let guys settle in. can’t turn over the roster over and over. It can evolve.
wargames @ 4/4/2020 11:57 AM
God no
CrushAlot @ 4/4/2020 11:58 AM
The Knicks need to wait and see what happens with the new adjusted cap numbers. THey will have the ability to offer some Marks like contracts for rfas.
BigDaddyG @ 4/4/2020 12:05 PM
I wouldn't offer anything close to $20 mil a year, especially when we still have Randle on the roster. Next year's free agent market is going to be a crap show. No reason to start arbitrarily throwing the bag at guys. Just need to be patient.
BRIGGS @ 4/4/2020 12:26 PM
The one thing I’ve realized is we’ve had tremendous failure in free agency. I think dolans strategy through the years is to find gms who will be a “hit” in free agency but it doesn’t work. It is very very hard to find a player at 24 who can do what Woods does. He can play with the top players in the nba toe to toe. He’s versatile long athletic tough. He’s a big time scorer with potential to be 25-10 from the 4-5. Now is that a winning player- not necessarily but it’s all how u fill out any team. We paid Randle 21 mm and I think woods is better

The guy was making probably a mill a year..now give him 22 mill.....fireable offense

That’s doesn’t make sense. He’s probably the Nba comeback player of year. We have Bobby Portis 15 mm bidding against ourselves. Hard to find players with his skills at 24. He’s gonna get paid but it might take a step up to get him

Your not incorrect but there are intangibles. Easy to say based on talent alone but what of Randles contract? Turnover effects? Woods personality? What is his real market value? Guy been in and out floating from team to team for what reason? Then you gonna give him 66 mil? why is he 24 and now just getting his shit together? Randles contract was heavy for reasons but he is a solid kid with good work ethic.
Randle kept his act consistent on a losing team and new found pressure being top 1-2 alpha on a young team with a coaching turmoil. I don’t know what next year brings but Randle was solid teammate, solid interview, and generally handled things well. Sure there was some issues. Look at the teams record!!! Now superimpose Wood in that same situation. i dont know the answer, but I know the questions. IM not the fan throwing out 66mil contracts based on my 5 year fandom of the kid. Kid is talented. What is the rest of his story?

martin @ 4/4/2020 1:16 PM
CWood has had 2 good months right? Maybe 6 weeks? In that time 1 win for team?

Feel like Portis had decent numbers at end of 2018-19 too

jskinny35 @ 4/4/2020 1:29 PM
I agree with Briggs that the talent is there - he could be a late bloomer at 24. The way he plays doesn't suggest he would regress as he seems to have improved his shooting and plays with an attitude on defense. It's not like he had lots of warts but had a hot shooting month in the playoffs...

That said, I would only hand out that kind of money if I got some intel about his past teams, behavior, locker room presence, etc... If it's immaturity kind of stuff - I could roll with that... if it's worse/toxic - gotta pass!

Do also agree we shouldn't really compare Randle to him as this season has showns us that while Randle may be our best statistical player and seems like a good guy - he clearly didn't mesh well with how we tried to play (RJ) and would make an great reserve on a better team. We can't make Randle what he isn't - and I think the way he plays (not enough outside threat, too many spin moves to turnovers) is not going to make our team better regardless.

I do think if Woods is mature and emotionally and mentally stable - he could turn into a star and play the way we would need to space our floor. Maybe and incentive based contract? Can we put a behavior/character clause and/or bonuses if the team performs well? If so, I would definitely retain Taj, Bullock and maybe even Ellington. Imagine our defense with Mitch, Woods and a Mo Harkless or even RJ at the 3? Yes, our offense may need a boost but it would be nice to see better rotating, length, hustle, etc...

In that scenario would prefer to trade Randle but if we couldn't and he was our 6th man - we'd suddenly all love Randle again.

The bottom line with some of these younger players is that it takes years for most of them to develop. It’s very lucky if you find a player to plug and play at 18-19-20. Even Kobe was a bit player his first year. I don’t k ow Christian wood. I don’t think he’s done anything to hurt the world. But his basketball game and mentality have grown with his age.

I love these:

Body like Tarzan. Mentality like Jane if Jane was a whored out cum guzzling Tinder slut who has crack whore eyes and a really sh*tty teeth. And smells bad too. I just added that in for flair. I'm big on flair. Did I mention the crack whore eyes?

It's possible for a guy to mature and gain perspective. Still doesn't mean I'd gamble $20 mil a year.
There’s been common knowledge among those close to the Detroit Pistons and around the team that Wood has struggled with professionalism, and has been quite immature to start his career.

You can get away with being a headache or a bit of a problem within the team outside of the basketball court when you’re LeBron James. When you’re a young, undrafted player in this league, not so much. This was the only reason Wood ever had to fight for the final roster spot for the Detroit Pistons. Talent-wise, and even need-wise, Wood is towards the very top of the roster.

franco12 @ 4/4/2020 2:53 PM
we need help at the PG spot, not PF.

We have Mitchell, Randle, Knox up front. I'd keep Bobby Portis long term on the right money. Mo Harkless probably would stay with team friendly money.

We have nothing at the PG spot except question marks.

I'd offer that kind of money and more for Fred VanVleet. He's 26 putting up 17 & 6 as the starting point guard for a play off bound team.

It makes ZERO sense to offer this kind of money to Christian Wood with the giant hole we have in our back court.

Put VanVleet on this roster next year, hope for some development from Robinson, Barrett; hope Randle settles down and has a better role next year; add some talent in the draft; and maybe Frank N turns into a decent player. And that group should be fairly competitive and aiming for the 8th slot in the East.

Add Christian Wood and who is running the offense? Barrett? Randle? Payton, god help us!

I get the thinking here. We've been losing for years so we will not attract an elite level FA who is looking to win....In order for us to strike it big, we need to hit the lottery (literally) or secure a young, up and coming FA who may be on the verge of developing into a really good player in this league. It's a gamble, sure, but with the right coaching staff, there is no reason he cant develop into one of the better PF's in the league.

Not sure about that price, though...

We need both!!! Hopefully we can draft our future pg, and sign a true stretch 4 who can play both sides of the ball. Neither Portis and Randle are reliable shooters and both are terrible on the defensive end.
