Knicks · GM Perry one year extension...... (page 1)

Makes sense in a crazy world. Can't say its an audition or not. Just logical to keep him on. We don't know when the draft is. We don't know when one season ends and another begins.
We have players and a history and new GM might not be able to relocate or get in front of things for some time. Perhaps Leon knows who he wants and is not even available at this moment.
With Perry's deal about to expire Knicks are just picking up its option one year at a time.
Can't think we can read anything into this about potential head coach candidates.

It makes sense because he's a very experienced basketball exec who can handle the day to day that Rose doesn't have a clue about. Rose can focus on the big-picture team building, but he needs a low maintenance GM that seems respected around the league and Perry fits the bill for now.

It would be nice to have some continuity with this young group of players. Miller may turn out to be a long term solution at coach. Nothing to lose with an abbreviated season coming up and a stacked draft in 21.

my criticism is as a one year deal, it's almost an indictment against him.

I get it and it makes total sense.

This also isn't chasing the next guy up because the guy you wanted was under contract with another team.

It was a May 1st thing tied to MIlls. It entirely possible Perry has a long term solution with another organization in the future but for now it is what it is. Another GM on another team is not available to flip now.

NCAA Division I men’s basketball is undergoing a long term change with the advent of players now bolting to alternatives. Coach Cal makes some serious bank in KU and is secure but the “game” is changing. This means these college teams will need to build a culture and develop or compete against money. for years we looked at Div I ball declining but it has not.

I’m a fan of Miller but also the charismatic nature of Calipari and what that might mean. He has unfinished business it the NBA and is tight with Leon. Knicks will win or entertain. Calipari brings a presence. Thats not a knock on Miller BTW, thats just a reality of the most valuable franchise in the league that plays on Broadway every night.

The Knicks are 67-163 since he took over as general manager, and the team has not signed a single marquee free agent, despite being in the country’s largest media market and projecting strong signals that it would do so.

not to mention the largest amount of cap space this franchise has ever had at one point

Now you can blame that all on mills or the extension revolves around him being a yes man, either way I'm not very optimistic base on the work and results that i have seen of SCOTT PERRY over the years

Raptors gm contract expires next offseason, so fingers crossed.

I think this season will be a write off- either won’t happen or will be disrupted/ abandoned, so best to stay pat for a year, DO NOT TRADE FOR CP3 as the cap will significantly reduce the next few years.

Like the move. Give him a year to prove whether the issue was Mills or him.

Is that your opinion? That Perry lost every trade he made, or fact? I'm confused. I checked the wikipedia page for Perry's trade, it says nothing about him losing them all.

I think this is a very different situation. No one knows when the nba is going to play again or what that will look like. I would bet that the next season is shortened. There also is talk that Rose wants Bobby Webster to be his gm and that his contract with the Raptors is up after next year.
In these times I think keeping continuity and waiting to make the right hire make sense.

Perry does not play, he is an executive.

It's an interstitial move. We already hired Aller and I'm sure Leon is looking at more people. It looks like Scott will be given the opportunity to keep what he kills. I have no problem with that.

I'm okay with the Perry move but please don't bring in Calipari. Coach Cal is great at a program like Kentucky where his ability to recruit top level talent will win 90% of his games against college competition. His track record says that when he plays teams with similar, or even slightly inferior, talent levels he is routinely outcoached.

In the NBA, he'll have to face teams with equal or superior talent and he certainly hasn't proven his ability to outcoach or outscheme anyone on a regular basis. We saw that pattern during his first stint in the NBA and I've seen nothing that leads me to believe that much has changed in the intervening years.

Good points. The “one and done” era of bringing in heralded All american whose prime (and rightfully so) attention is one season in and then to the pros. Building teams with 19 year olds, some immature both physically and mentally with everyone in their ear might get old. Maybe he craves a shot at building some continued core and developing. Can he coach? I suppose its a fair question and his track record is mixed. So is Coach K. He too has the same year one and dones and some not all teams come together.

As for giving Perry a year to prove himself? I doubt that. Too many scenarios to ponder and speculate really to what they agreed on. All we have are track records and all I can see is Perry has been solid but we don’t know what’s his or on Mills.

I hope there is nothing to the trade rumors. I am hoping that Aller is given a year to scheme and plan for the 2021 offseason.

I don't believe that keeping Perry or Miller is good for continuity, miller is 10 games under 500, and perry is about 100.

Perry could not mend issues with melo or KP( the closes we had to stars), failed to land even an average PG, didn't make a single trade to make us a better team, the development of players has been a joke, our best players are one dimensional players that don't even compliment each other. He continues to go after players like Payton and Mario (his own draft busts), and he assisted in blowing 70 million dollars on fake ass players who came here for the money, interviewed 10 coaches and picked the worst out of the bunch (because he was cool with LBJ and Wade).

Putting both of them in lesser roles (like assistants) is a better solution if you want to talk continuity.

Drafting RJ 3rd in a 3 man draft was not that impressive, and drafting a shot blocking center in time where 90% of centers are perimeter orientated is basically "OK"

This is all true.

Perry is the one who came in and said the plan is to Rebuild with the draft and youth. So his record is expected. There are even people calling to tank so you can't blame him for the record. A rebuild is supposed to take a few years (of being bad.)
An important part of a rebuild is sticking with the plan. It was Mills who wanted to keep Morris and Perry held him off to stick with the plan to rebuild.

There is also a factor that isn't being mentioned. World Wide Wes. Perry is a longtime associate of Wes. https://www.gq.com/story/william-wesley-... And Wes is the behind the scene Factor that will try to funnel talent to the Knicks (in the same way that he gets talent to Coach Calipari at Kentucky.) He's like the quiet consigliere of Leon. I'm sure Wes advised Leon to keep Perry. If Wes is silently, unofficially associated with the Knicks FO then he'd want a GM thats familiar and trusted.
