The privilege of this guy. Blaming everyone else when he attacked a joint session of congress. These people really believe they could go to washigton try to overthrow the government and just go on with their lives like nothing happened. How fd in the head do you have to be to believe that.

You hit it on the head. These people think the entire country only belongs to them. The one good thing I can say about the Trump era is it really brought the problem of white privilege to the forefront in this country.

The term “white privilege” is extremely offensive. No matter what your political beliefs are that’s not a nice term to describe people Who simply don’t have your same beliefs

That's not what the term is meant to convey. It's meant to convey the reality that peaceful protesters can get gassed while domestic terrorist blocks away get treated with kids gloves and cry when they start getting hit with similar consequences. These are the same consequences that the CHAZ protesters faced. Why should these terrorists be treated different? Because of their perceived expectations of white privilege?

I disagree. The term is disgusting to me. I’m a white conservative BUT I’ve always treated EVERYONE well and with respect. Anyway it’s a disgusting term

It's a disgusting term because it accurately describes what is happening. Doesn't mean it has to be directed at everyone but it does happen.

What you may be believing is akin to its much more evil half brother of racism; to project it does not exist in America is being blind

totally disagree. I recommend you read my story I just posted to BigDaddy

Read it. A very unfortunate incident.

Has nothing to do with white privilege or anything close to the definition of what most would understand to cover that territory.

Unfortunate? Put aside your beliefs and just look at it as a human being . It was more than “unfortunate” it was downright scary. I was scared to death for my wife that they weee going to rape her and god knows what else.

Didn't mean to downplay and I'll put up any other word the more strongly and better describes what you and wife went thru.

Now imagine having to go through that on a regular basis while grocery shopping, driving in a nice car, being lost in the wrong neighborhood, on a jog, trying to buy a home in a better neighborhood, applying for a job. You and wife experienced the worst of the worst. Imagine LIVING it on a regular basis. That's white priviledge

. Well you did downplay it quite frankly and immediately went into the “white privilege” thing. Anyway whatever not trying to change your mind. But i am sick to my stomach right now. This will be my last post on this site for good after some of the comments. BigDaddyG and jskinny I want To thank you for the kind words about my horrible experience. Despite different opinions it means a lot that you show concern

The term is not to meant to be a reflection of our beliefs, but the differences in the consequences certain groups of people face when expressing those beliefs. I don't care what you're ideology is. I welcome your views, even if I disagree with them. But their is a double standard. Shannon Sharpe brought up the point that Tom Brady faced no backlash for his support of Trump, but could you imagine the backlash LeBron would face if he supported Louis Farrakhan?
I appreciate you being civil despite different beliefs. Sadly that’s not always the case. Let me tell you about a scary incident that took place last July My wife and I took a Ride to a nearby beach Where a bunch of BLM “ Peaceful protestors” happened to be. We minded our own business but I guess what caught their attention was that I was wearing a NYPD cap(my father is a retired NY cop). Anyway they gathered around us cursing and saying a lot of disgusting things like “Death to white boys” “F the police” and even told my wife they are going to “run a train on her”. Thankfully I grabbed her and ran while they threw things at us and even some spit on us. My wife was so shaken by the incident she didn’t leave the house at all for a couple weeks. So needless to say I do take offense when I hear terms like white privilege since I treat people right and still got nearly attacked with my wife for having different beliefs/skin color

What happened to you and your wife was horrible. I don't understand the connection to the term "White Privilege" though. We live in a world with knuckleheads. What you encountered was disgusting and I hope those people got theirs.

Let me tell you what I have witnessed as white privilege. I am Filipino, I wanted to say this to make a point that I am not black or white. Anyways, I love basketball. When I was a teenager, I was working in a McDonalds in White Plains. I worked with black and white kids. I was "fresh off the boat" or rather "fresh of the 747" and really didn't know much about life in the states. The black kids asked me if I like basketball and I said "hell yeah". I was not your typical asian kid. I am 6'1" so that's why they asked about basketball :-) They said after our shift we are going to play in the nearby park. After work, we met up and before we left they told me this. "When we get stopped by cops just say "Yes sir" and "No sir"". I said. Huh? What do you mean? They said just do it. I said OK. So we were walking to the park and guess what. Police car stopped us. White cops stopped us. We weren't doing anything wrong, just walking, but they stopped us anyways. They asked what, where and why. We said yes sir no sir. They let us go and got to the park and played. This happened almost all the time that we played. Then one day, my shift was ending 30 min after them so I said I will meet them there. One of my white coworkers was also ending shift so I asked him if he wanted to play ball. He said yes. We walked to the park. I saw the police car that always stops us and it just kept driving passed us. I stopped automatically but the car just kept on going. My white coworker asked me what I was doing. I was dumbfounded. That was my first encounter with how blacks and whites are treated by cops and how black and white kids perceived what was normal.

One last post before I go. It wasn’t a “few knuckleheads” it was a whole crowd of BLM Protesters and they certainly weren’t “peaceful”. I can’t give you a clear cut reason why we were attacked but like I said I was wearing a NYPD hat that belonged to my father I’m sure that was one reason. Was my skin color another reason? Most likely but I can’t say for certain. Secondly my father and uncle were cops. My brother in law is a cop as well as two cousins. So I know a lot of cops. Are there some bad cops out there? Of course I won’t deny that . But the majority are good people who are just doing their jobs putting their lives on the line to keep people safe and trying to get home to their families. Yes I feel cops have been very mistreated these past 7 months or so.

You had a terrible experience where you were attacked for being white ... YES ... and I understand that as a recent trauma you may have very strong emotions about this... BUT that doesn't mean "white privilege" doesn't exist. Maybe your trauma is affecting your ability to be objective but no one would blame you for that. Just please note that you may not be in the right state of mind to be ready for this discussion.

But let's forget the word white and try a different attribute... replace "White" with "Attractive". Is it wrong to say attractive people have privilege? Attractive men and women are usually seen as more trustworthy and have an easier time getting certain jobs. Their looks become an advantage in ways not limited to just the dating scene. Not in all ways and not all the time and not all attractive people cash in on their advantage ... but to say attraction doesn't confer any advantage and is "extremely insulting" would be wrong. An attractive person may want to downplay the effect their looks had on their success but it wouldn't be "extremely insulting" to suggest it played some role in it.

Historically white folks have an easier time getting housing, good schools and jobs, and preferential police treatment. These things taken together form what is called "White privilege". To deny it exists is like saying (to make a silly Knicks analogy) Immanuel Quickley isn't a great free throw shooter because he once missed two free throws. "White privilege" doesn't make white people bulletproof. Nobody ever said it did. "White privilege" is a describing a set of conditions that makes life 10% easier for white people (we can disagree about the %percentage% but I picked one to make the point).

See this type of post is not fair. Like I said before my experience had nothing to do with my beliefs. I felt this way long before what happened to my wife and I. Like I said I respect your views but please don’t say “your trauma is clouding your judgment” because that’s nonsense. If you don’t agree with me that’s fine but my beliefs have ZERO to do with what happened a few months back. Sorry but my family and I find the term offensive and disgusting. Despite what happened to me I felt this way before that and that belief isn’t changing for me

Well I didn't say "few" so there's that. My use of the word knucklehead is just my style of posting. It seems to offend you and it is not my intent. Those people are assholes and like I said before I hope they got theirs. Your story still has nothing to do with "White Privilege". Your encounter, incident, or whatever heinous act we want to describe it is horrible and disgusting. Should have never happened. We live in world with a lot of assholes.

I agree with martin. Sambakick's explanation is on point.

When did I say I was offended? Never said I was offended by your post. I do completely disagree with your assessment Though and yes I take offense to the white privilege term.

Racism exists. Those that don't experience racism are privileged enough to not have to go through that experience. Generally, that's white people. Most understand that as White Privilege.

Maybe you don't like the way it is phrased, don't know.

If you want to take offense to it, so be it, it's not your phrase. Pick one that suits you.

Completely disagree. I did take offense to the fact that you didn’t seem to care less about what happened to my wife and I but now That you know what my beliefs are I’m not surprised

You seem very stuck on that so let me firmly correct any misunderstanding. It's a tragedy that you, your wife would have to go through what you had to experience. Just terrible.

Now imagine if you experienced that just because of the color of your skin and experienced it on any given day for no reason and not because you showed up at the wrong time at the wrong place with a bunch of people who were acting like a mob instead of a protest. We both understand that your hat didn't help the situation and most definitely made it worse, right?

The internet and forums are a tough place to get exact sentiment across in words and phrases and you seem to be trying to hold me to account for not expressing them directly to you in a way that makes you feel good about it. I'll stop there.

I have no idea what you disagree with as you haven't really taken the time to explain yourself around the topic of white privilege. Maybe you can hold yourself to account and not keep on circling back to the experience you and your wife tragically went through.

Honestly Martin what is your problem? This is why I never talk politics because of negative comments like this. I guess In retrospect I should have left it alone but being raised by two great parents who taught me to respect others But also to stand up for your beliefs. My family in particular has gone through a lot of bullsh#t from BLM “Protestors”. Not just my experience but my brother in law and cousins who are NY cops as well and dealt with that. If you dont like my beliefs fine I could care less but at least be civil and respectful about it. Once Again BigDaddyG I want to thank you for being very gracious and civil despite different views. I totally respect you for that.

I just directly extended myself out to you and you took it as an ignore and went on to other posters and you expect what?

If you'd like to engage on White Privilege, I'm all for it but you haven't and that's definitely a problem in our greater parts. Calling it an offensive term is offensive in and of itself and clearly a lack of understanding on your part, I dare say it's up there with an All Live Matters take on BLM.

To deny it exists is like saying (to make a Knicks analogy Immanuel Quickley isn't a great free throw shooter because he once missed two free throws.

You didn't respond to the rest of my post or explain why -- before the incident with your wife -- you thought it was disgusting and insulting to talk about white privilege. You just say it's disgusting without any other example except the one you yourself chose to offer up as proof. So forgive the confusion but you set it up to be confusing.

GustavBahler @ 1/30/2021 12:08 PM
"White privilege" is..

Not getting your ass shot by a cop, when a black person most likely would be,

Its getting more favorable mortgage rates vs black people with the same credit rating.

Its getting shown homes in neighborhoods that black folks wouldnt be shown.

Its having your physical pain being treated seriously by some doctors and black people sent home, because they're treated like drug addicts.

Its more favorable sentencing for drug crimes if you're white (see old Rockefeller drug laws)

Its not being treated automatically like a potential thief when shopping.

Its not having a cab you tried to hail drive right past you (if you're black) and pick up the white guy in the suit.

White privelege is everywhere. Take off the blinders.
