Knicks · Leon Rose Interviewed by Mike Breen (page 1)

No problem. I'm glad Leon finally got a chance to speak to the fanbase.
This is what Rose said he is looking for in a coach....
"We want to find the right leader that can develop our young players as well as hold everyone accountable," Rose said. "And take us from development to becoming a perennial winner. We also want someone that we think will be collaborative with the front office and someone that when you're in that huddle and when you're looking at that coach's eyes, every player who's looking at him knows that person is driving the ship and going to get the job done."
Maybe I'm reading into this too much but based on the quote above, I find it difficult to believe that Rose would hire an assistant without any head coaching experience as the head coach. Maybe, someone like Hardy or Mosley can be hired as lead assistant but not head coach.
When Rose mentions that he wants a coach that will take this franchise from development to winner narrows the choices down to a few. Atkinson checks the box in terms of development but he's never shown that he can manage a perennial winner. He's never gotten the chance to do so either. Thibs and Mike Brown are the only coaches that has experienced winning on a large scale for a long period of time. Also, when he says he wants someone that is willing to collaborate with the front office, does this mean familiarity? Someone he already had or has a comfortable working relationship with?
Of course, Rose gave a lot of diplomatic answers and is playing it close to the vest as he should so its difficult to tell exactly who he may tab as the new HC. Someone may WOW management during the interview process.
So far, the staff that Rose has put together is the most impressive set of hire's we have seen in this organization in a long time, probably since Checketts and Grunfeld were running the show. There is no reason to doubt that Rose will not make the right hire at Coach.

He definitely comes across as someone who doesn't know much and will surround himself around people that do.
I believe Dolan essentially hired Leon to get stars here because mills and phil couldn't..
The fact that he kept perry seemed to be more of his personally relationship with him, same for Wes, although wes is truly a connected guy.

Here's the part that excites me... if you are smart, innovative and tactical you will find ways capitalize on situations and that is what I think Rose is doing here. They are interviewing a TON of people. What a novel concept... interview a boat load of the bright and upcoming minds in the NBA. A coaching search is a unique opportunity to talk to people in other organizations with the most detailed information available.

How would your successes translate here?
What are the biggest strengths/areas to improve you see with (go through all the roster players)?
etc. etc... basic interview questions could really be a data mining operation on other team's best practices AS WELL as scouting for front office and coaching talent.
Finding a HC should be no different than drafting a player. Sure you have your favorites but you work them all out and talk to them all. Let yourself be WOWed. Keep tabs on guys that slip away. Build some relationships... "hey we are going Thibs but you really impressed us and hope our paths cross in the future"
You get the idea... but Uptown is spot on that so far the hires have been tactical and talent driven.

Dont believe young stars are going to buy in to a coach who has been around, unless he's been winning games lately, not just in a wikipedia bio. Believe a good asst coach, who is closer to the age of the players, who can better relate to them. Will help spark the team. Rick Pitino, JVG, they were young coaches who brought new ideas to the team, got the players to buy in. Dont believe Thibs, Mike Brown, etc are going to be the best choice. Knowledge of Xs and Os, and relating to today's stars is more important than NBA experience right now.
Miller is in his 50s, but the players responded in part because they know its his shot at the NBA as well. He knows how to develop talent. If not Miller, rather see a good asst. coach somewhere get a shot.

Sounds to me like Coach K.

Good post Fish! Love the idea of interviewing great minds and perhaps unearthing new concepts and innovative thinking. The idea of getting valuable info of best practices and learning winning habits from winning franchises is a great idea.
Rose was very humble in the interview, and admitted that he doesn't know everything so he surrounded himself with great basketball minds. This is an essential trait of a great leader.

First and foremost, I want NO Parts of Mike Brown. Most if not all of his success is on the back of Lebron. Only brought him up because his has a winning record.
I agree with you about not wanting retreads. A young up and coming coach would be great but keep in mind, Rick Pitino had already proven to be a winning head coach on the college level and had proved that his innovative brand of basketball works. Of the assistants, Udoka and Hardy are the most intriguing.
Do you know who players respect more than anything? Former successful players turned coach. This leads me to believe that Kidd has a serious shot at landing the job.

Pitino made his name in college, as good as he was. Pitino was a breath of fresh air for the Knicks org. Started the franchise back on the road to relevancy. Like to see a hire like that. From college or an NBA bench. As long as it isnt one of the same old faces, who have had their shot. Often, more than one.
