Knicks · If Cavs draft Obi Toppin and want to move Love, would the Knicks be interested? (page 1)

martin @ 7/14/2020 11:14 AM
No idea who Cleveland will draft but Obi Toppin seems like a fit IF they also can move Love. Team seems like they have too many PGs and guards to want to draft someone like LeMelo or Edwards but what do I know. Maybe draft Wiseman but it would be a year before they figure out what to do with him and Andre (gotta guess he is going to opt-in).

Would the Knicks be interested to put Love next to Mitch for a couple of years?

Cleveland moves a big contract for an unhappy guy who will be 32 next year, 3 years remaining on his contract. They reboot with Toppin and maybe he fits next to Andre. Maybe those 2 guys fit inside out? Andre seems a bit of a non-spacer, throw-back player but who knows what Cavs thinks (they got him for free). Knicks trade one or more of their team opt-out contract players and maybe a pick and/or other player. Cavs immediately become a team with incredible cap flexibility going forward.

Knicks get a spacer big to put next to Mitch for a couple of years. It costs them cap space but helps put a temporary focal point in the offense where others can fit in until they take over.

IDK just throwing stuff against the wall.

Thoughts?

Love has a toxic contract and his declining value rather have randle contract its next 2020/2021 19 million and 2021/2022 4 million guaranteed.

True. But will the Knicks be better than last year with Randle as the dominant usage player?

You want cap space to attract free agents. If the Knicks DON'T get better next year, who they going to sign?

knicks1248 @ 7/14/2020 11:36 AM
what has Love done for any team that didn't have LBJ on the squad. Even in his prime he failed to make minny remotely good, and he hasn't done jack in Cleveland since he became the main guy.

He's a veteran in search of a title, he's not a leader, he's a role player that needs a Leader and other vets to keep him motivated.

Is Love good enough to make that much more of an impact on winning than Randle? A Love signing would be reminiscent of the Amar'e signing, except STAT was a lot better. I wouldn't touch Love's contract, unless they attached a first round pick to it. We'd be doing them the favor, so it's only fair.

To be honest i'd rather sign Gallinari than take on Love. I think he's better at this point and more versatile.

Maybe you can go look at the Western conference and how stacked it was during the time Love was at Minny, and then let us know what you thought of the rosters Love had at the time he was that young.

It's not about getting a player who necessarily and automatically is LBJ and lifts a team by his presence. It's about putting a guy next to Mitch and RJ and others who helps them grow and right-fixes the team over the next 2 years.

1248 got all kinds of things figured out. He even measures his motivation? Clev is guard oriented with young immature guys running the ship. Who to blame for Love who Cle resigned to rebuild with him post Lebron? Did they think they could get trade value out of him? Blame GM? Brock Aller? Ownership? IF you can’t answer what they were thinking the you can’t say what the Rainman said post script.

Also, can Love even play PF anymore defensively? His best position is probably center at this point. Another point that needs to brought up is Love's locker room presence. I haven't heard he's a bad guy. He's sounded pretty cool in the interviews I've listened to. But he does have a reputation for being aloof. He's probably not the guys you want for veteran leadership.
Nalod @ 7/14/2020 2:52 PM
Technically a good fit next to Mitchell as he can spread the floor. Leadership? C'mon, we dom't know the guy. Next to Lebron all others are role players. big issuse last season was coach gave the young guards too much respnsability and he lost the locker room. When that happend, ,he lost Love too.
The big thing is his contract and durability. We can stop there unless we are compensated to take him.
NYKBocker @ 7/14/2020 3:13 PM
Love is in the wrong side of 30 like Gallo. However, I am a big Gallo fan and I would sign up for 3 more years of Gallo than Love. I also think he fits more with our group than Love

Love is on the downside of his career and still has 3 more years on his contract! To keep me from hanging up the phone, Cleve would have to offer an unprotected 2021 1st round pick plus some. The prospects in next years draft will really good.

wargames @ 7/14/2020 5:03 PM
Not unless they attach Sexton or Garland. We would probably have to send them a young guy back too....... it’s a interesting trade acenario

Love still has marketing value, which is part of the equation for having him on the roster. He's a future HOFer as long as he stays healthy and still compile counting stats. He was always a market max franchise player at best, never a contender level franchise player.

Cavs aren't really going to get another player in FA who will give them that marketing value. If they save some money, they'll have to overpay in FA to get a guy who will give them probably as little as Love on the court.

You need someone to anchor the sales of courtside seats, marketing nationally broadcasted games, appeasing sponsors, etc. The team will trade Love for expirings only, but probably not if other teams demand picks too. That's the roadbump that will likely mean Love is stuck there.

Cleveland will take whomever they think is BPA without regard to positional value.

If the Knicks absolutely are driven to take a veteran on a bad contract, the only fit would be Chris Paul ( and a shaky fit at that)

On Wiseman, his best chance is to free fall to San Antonio.

Pretty much my feelings as well. I'd like to see us add a tough skilled player as well. We got a first rounder for the last one we briefly had. Hope that pick treats us well.
I see Martin's point though, Love is a skilled player and can serve a function. Just depends on his salary and usage. (Don't want it to be like last year with Morris.)

TheGame @ 7/15/2020 10:24 AM
The only way I would touch Love is if the Cavs also took Randle and gave us a future pick. If the issue is repacing Randle with Love, then I think Love is a better player (even though at this point in their careers, even that could be debated). Love will add shooting, and his game won't interfere with Barrett's game. Randle for Love and a second round pick would be a deal I would do. Randle has a better contract and is a younger players, so the Cavs might bite.

I say just sign Gallinari who is a better fit than both. Although Randle May stay on as 6th man.

If it's for Randle I say Juli-yes!
KnickDanger @ 7/17/2020 9:18 PM
Three years left on Love's contract, 1 on Randle's correct? I wouldn't do it, but if Randle left in the deal knicks fans would replace him as their whipping boy with Love.
smackeddog @ 7/18/2020 5:08 AM
I'd rather spend money on Bertans, or even Gallo- I'm not a fan of Love at all. In fact I'd rather sign Marcus Morris as our starting PF
