The two things are mutually exclusive, this keeping Harden and RW And contending.

These kinds of proclamations reduce both Harden and RW to shiny trophy players.

He may be getting the sense that neither player will bring back the kind of assets he will need to contend. His ego may not accept that what he paid to get RW was a bad investment. So there's that. But its hard to see how that team gets better rather than worse.

Add the fact that a new coach will require a year of adjustments and both players are another year older.

Even assuming they hire JVG, JVG is not a miracle worker.

There is a time to cut bait on failed experiments... I think we all can see where this Rocket is headed.

We talk like the rockets were abject failures. They had a .611 winning % and moved to second round of playoffs. They have never been built for deep championship runs.
Do I think they have a Rosey outlook? Perhaps not as chip contenders but there is a lot to consider especially chemistry in RW first season. He also had Covid which even a Superman might have had some effects to his superhuman stamina.
Do I give two shyts and a phuch about them or RW? Not really, but at this moment in time I don’t think we make a good landing for him and that’s fine by me!

Why do you think their record will suck? Fact is they were third in a tough conference. Made it past OKC and lost to Lakers (The Champs) when Westbrook was hurt. They also had two of their better bench guys have terrible numbers against the Lakers. Not to mention Harden and Gordon did not exactly light it up from three in the playoffs. Think if they can add another shooter they will have another good year. Do not see them worse than a 4th seed.

They had overachieved with MDA. Under JVG they will either learn to play D ( Harden? Westbrook? ) Or become a dumpster fire( compared to the glory days of MDA) I am counting on the second scenario.

The term "suck"is somewhat vague on my part. If they are 6th seed I would be surprised and my hat would be off to JVG. I think in the best case scenario if Harden is healthy they are 7-8th seed ( new coach, new system).
There is also an outside chance they miss the playoffs all together. Injuries and chemistry concerns are always a factor.

As far as the convo regarding Houston’s draft picks “sucking” — this is a different world now. You no longer need a top draft pick to get a good player look at the Heat with Herro last year, Jazz with Mitchell a couple years ago or even us with Mitch who was a second round pick.

Money matters. Westbrook’s contract is just too large. I have been saying for weeks our cap space will facilitate a trade for two teams and we will be compensated for taking on salary.

Nalod is not that good. Its just logic though. It should be considered given the state of the team and no draft pick given our position and draft status can tilt the narrative that quickly.
What Ian says is just smart. Not to say it happens, it has to be an opportunity that makes sense.
Fans love the starphuch big move but for that to happen there has to be Prerequisite posturing that needs to be accomplished first.
At the same time knicks can make a big splash like clippers did. They moved Griffith a year earlier as part of the prerequisite. They moved Deandre as well. Then was able to turn CP3 to Paul George with some assets thrown in. Look at the moves the the year prior.
Lebron goes to young asset rich team that was lousey. They had Let go of Randle, Let go of Bropez, Drafted Ball ahead of Tatum and Ingram had blood clots for goodness sake. But, they were able to create cap space and make a big trade. No two situations are the same but both franchises were able to change rather quickly BUT it required the ability to sign a top 5 player AND make trades.
