Knicks · Revisiting Danilo Gallinari in Free Agency (page 1)

I wrote a few months back that I thought he would be our most likely FA signing- I still think that's true. Here are reasons why:

1. He's a CAA guy and we know he's open to playing in NY.
2. OKC is rebuilding and may want him back but probably won't want to invest in him long-term, so he's gettable. Also, not a lot of fits for him in the open market because most teams with cap space are rebuilding.
3. He can really shoot it, this should really be #1. He's a high volume guy (2.5-3pt made per game) and high percentage (40+%).
4. His versatility allows him to play next to Randle at SF here, or as a stretch-4, which is probably his best role going forward. But he can do either until the front office/Thibs fully sort out the roster and rotation.
5. Wherever he goes, he wins. OKC, LAC, and Denver all exceeded expectations with him being a #1 or #2 option on offense. Clearly he's a highly impactful vet who brings winning to the table.

My feeling is he seems like a very safe bet for these reasons. His obvious negatives are advanced age and injury history, but I think the injuries have lowered his overall mileage in a way that we saw with Grant Hill later in his career. Gallinari can have a role similar to Redick did in Philly and New Orleans, complimenting young talent with shooting and leadership. It obviously comes down to dollars and, most importantly, number of years, but at age 32 he should still have many good years left and may have some all-star upside in the east for the next couple of seasons if things go well.

The main reasons it may not happen would be if we traded for Chris Paul (or another star) and didn't include Randle, we simple absorb a majority of that star's contract. Another reason would be getting FVV (who is far less likely) as we will likely only sign 1 big ticket FA and probably use the rest of the space on short-term pieces. Otherwise I don't see a reason they don't want Gallinari.

I think if we manage to trade for CP, melo is probably the SF/PF they will look at.

I like DG, and think he is a safe bet, but i dont think he moves the needle unless we add better players then we have

Gallinari wouldn't really move the needle, very few individual players do. The hope would be that his leadership and skillset (great shooter and shot-maker) help guys like Barrett, Knox, Mitch etc make a big jump so the collective improvements move the needle.

Didn’t have a great playoffs, so he’s one of the few options that didn’t inflate their value. Wonder what (if any) winning teams can and will offer him big money?

Miami would be the big option but they want to hold off until next year I think. I don't see any other obvious options.

That's great, since we won't make the playoffs next year's either. Hopefully, we can unload Randle and offer Gallo a similar contract. Don't think you can have Randle and Gallo on the same team tho .

Defensively it would be an issue, but my hope would be Randle comes off the bench so he can play more center.

C Robinson
PF Gallinari
SF Barrett
SG Vassell
PG Augustin/Ntilikina
6th Randle

This would be my hope, but obviously I can easily see Randle starting at PF and Gallinari at SF for at least the beginning of the year if this were to happen.

Gallo's presence will help give the team a more fluid offense. Certainly better offensively than Bullock/Ellington/Harkless/Dotson. Probably less of a defender than Harkless/Dotson... but at the same time, his height is worth something...

At the right price, he can help.
(really, we need better shooting from RJ/Frank/DSJ... but if you can jumpstart that with a reliable player we'll do better).

A Gallo/Randle tandem would be worse on defense than the Randle/Morris tandem was. It doesn't matter if you pair them as a small ball 5/4 tandem or in a 4/3 lineup. They'd need to be handcuffed to Mitch in most lineups. That said, I like Gallo a lot better more than Randle. But I just don't want a repeat of last year's free agency blunder.

Yes it would be a huge problem defensively. But Rome wasn't built in a day I guess.

C Robinson/Randle
F Gallinari/Randle

Randle would split between positions but you probably mix in Gibson or find an athletic big who can offset the Randle defensive issues off the bench.

Agreed- a Randle Gallo combo would be rough! I think the team would be better with Gallo over Randle, but Gallo’s injury issue makes me wonder if it would be worth it. I’m not sure anymore- the players I wanted at PF seem to be long shots now (Grant’s playoff performance will have Denver keeping him, Bertrand it seems like we’re not interested in, etc). Now it seems more like we’ll keep Randle until at least the deadline

Worry about Gallo revisting his injury prone days like Camby, when he came back to NY. Would have to be a cap friendly deal, whatever that would be. As well as a good backup, in case he gets hurt. Dont want too much to ride on Gallo staying healthy.

He's not a starter at this point in career

Unless they make some roster moves, it might be another season of role playets having an outsized role.

Gallinari not a starter ? He’s been one of the most efficient offensive players these last few years and has been playing his best basketball too. There’s only about 40-50 players in the league who are better than him right now.

Nalod @ 10/8/2020 7:55 AM
with Duncan Robinson emerging I’m not so sure Miami would be hot after him. But if his market value dropped and all things being the same or close enough maybe he would drop his price to play on an up and coming team like the Heat.

I wouldn’t hold it again a player who had a rough playoffs. We have not been there in a while.
