Wow can't hate the 3 year 10 million deal. I though at first it was around 6-8M.
Still the signing of Payton is a head scratcher, but hope it leads to a bigger trade not involving frank

Apparently, years 2 and 3 are not guaranteed. Feel like Rivers could have received a better contract from another team. I guess he sees an minutes and an opportunity...

too bad we missed on cole anthony- and if we could call patrick ewing jr back, we'd have the second generation of a championship caliber starting line up!

Who is in control of the contract? Knicks or rivers? If its the knicks, damn solid move.

The entertainment value will be high with this one Jokes aside, he doesn't turn the ball over much and he's a decent three point shooter. But I would start Payton at PG over him, by inches. Better facilitator, better defender... it's close.

And to be fair, some highlights.

He was supposed to be the next great college PG, the next Kyrie... but somehow he never panned out - or never got the right opportunity? (Maybe he wasted a bunch of early years with dad as his coach on the Clippers, trying to make him see the floor and pass as crisply as he did.) He's 28 now.
He's solid enough, though he's an unreliable shooter/FT shooter like many of their other signings.
Here's what Austin Rivers can do on a good day:
unstopaball12@ 11/22/2020 10:17 PM
He is inconsistent and pounds the ball much more than we like, but he does play good D and can hit the 3

I can see them starting together but if it came down to the 2 of them, I would start Rivers because of the floor spacing (Shooting) and the offensive threat that Rivers is and Payton ain't.

The thing with Austin, and it explains why his overall fg% is low, is that he's much better off-ball than he is on-ball. That's why he had a resurgence with Houston. You start getting those blooper reels when he starts trying to get fancy. Even then, his assist numbers arent really special. We'll also start to see that Burks is a much better player, which limits minutes at the two. At the most, I can see Payton and Rivers splitting minutes at the 1.

It took a while for him to be a professional and realize he's a role player. He was young when he came into the league.

Just hope he doesn't think he's Harden and tries to outshine RJ

He's a combo guard but I imagine a trade has to be coming soon or at the trade deadline. Rivers, DSJ, Frank, Payton, Burks, RJ, Quickley, Harper, Powell....
Please get DSJ outta here

Payton has the ability to light up a box score, and plays D. Also has his negatives, is injury prone.as well. Frank, DSjr, they need to put pts on the board or Payton will get their minutes. Dont believe he's going to freeze out RJ. New coach and RJ isnt a rookie anymore. Doubt he will put up with it, and neither will the FO.
In spite of the flaws in Payton's game, he's going to make the other PGs earn their minutes.
Payton is the best passer at the point but the major problem with him is his broken jumper. Payton, RJ and Randle on the floor at the same is a spacing nightmare. Plus, Payton pounds the air out of the ball. Rivers is the only pg (combo guard) on the roster that has proven he can hit the 3 at a consistent clip and would at the very least provide some spacing for RJ to slash and play bully ball. New coaching staff means none of these guys have an advantage.
If it were up to me, I would have just rolled with DSJ and Frank and would have used this year to evaluate as both are at the end of their rookie deals. This is yet another front office that doesn't seem to trust or believe that DSJ and or Frank can handle starting pg duties. Lets see who emerges victorious in training camp.
Payton cannot shoot but like you said good passer. He’s fine as a backup but no way should he be starting

Knixkik wrote:Nice move for the knicks. Honestly these moves have been fine besides Payton. Rivers, Burks and Bullock are 3 players who can all shoot and defend hard and fit nicely next to RJ, Obi and Mitch. The fit is better than last years players
C Robinson PF Toppin SF Barrett SG Bullock or Burks PG Rivers
If they view Rivers as a PG and let RJ run the offense more then I can get behind this but we need to move Randle ASAP. I like the improvement in shooting, playmaking and defense with this lineup. These players actually compliment the core group.
Payton can’t shoot. Rivers’ shot is decent which is why I like the move
