reasons:
CHA - would free up the necessary space to sign Hayward via the S&T and get a productive while flawed 26 big to get backup 4/5 minutes and rid themselves of Batum. Instead of being stuck with stretching Batum 27 MM dead salary over the next 3 years.
NYK - With drafting Obi they free up the starting PF spot and acquire a bunch of second round picks to take on the extra cap (8 MM this year) to get some draft assets.
BOS - I could have left them in or out of this trade but Ainge doesn't have to decide if he wants to use the S&T to acquire Rozier he can punt it for now and have the TPE for a full year and decide if he wants to use some of it or all of it down the road to acquire a better fitting piece. They send a couple small assets to secure the TPE.
I feel like NY should get first round picks from both CHA and BOS, the TPE for BOS is absolute GOLD for them.
Or, NY should just do a deal with CHA to clear Batum and give up Randle and get protected first round pick(s) from CHA. They would have to PAY $27M. You don't eat $27M for second round picks
The Hornets as of right now do not have the cap space to sign the contract they agreed to with Hayward. They have to clear about $7M to do so. The problem is that they don't really have a harmless, quick and easy way to do that...The only players they have making over $7M are...
Zeller at $15M. Unless you're trading him into cap space or an exception the other team needs to match within $5M of salary which isn't enough. And if you're trading him into cap space or an exception you're likely attaching an asset.
Rozier at $18.9M. Same situation as Zeller where the other team needs to get within $5M unless CHA is paying an asset to attach. And with a 2nd year on Rozier's deal it'd be a pretty notable asset that CHA would have to attach.
Batum, once again is in the same situation. In order to match salaries the other team needs to get within about $5.5M of his salary. So a deal wouldn't clear enough room. And to move him into cap space would cost real assets since he's a useless $27M player.
For CHA to make the space by doing 1-2 of the moves above will likely cost them at least 1 first round pick. Their other option is to just waive/stretch Batum. But that puts $9M of dead cap each of the next 3 years. Thy project to be a cap space team next year but a $9M dead money charge throws a big dent into that (wipes out like 1/3 of the cap).
CHA has a ton to gain by doing a deal like this.
Sounds good. The tank keeps rolling, Frank gets a bench buddy and Hurricane Randle moves further down the coast.
what's the situation with Batum -- how long are we saddled with him?
not super excited about all of the seconds because i suspect boston's will be near the back half.
now if there's a way to swap out batum and get rozier that would be more like it
one can only hope that Leon is leveraging our existing, remaining cap space to maximum effect

thanks. i would pass on the seconds, then. you can buy them cheaper and Boston's probably not worth much and they're already in a situation where they have more than they could use
somewhere we need a first or serviceable, real assets thrown in.
I like it. I am not that fond of 2nd rd picks, would hope to get something better for making this work. Prefer to leave Boston out of the deal as I see no need to help them re-fill their roster. Only real question is whether we want to use the opportunity here rather than hold onto cap space while the season plays out.
I think batum got released already but anyways i think the knicks are just going to take rozier contract call it day.

I'd much rather just eat Batum's contract without giving up Randle. If we trade Randle I'd still want a player who could score...
I would need a protected 1st at the very least...

For me, moving Randle does a few things. More time for Obi, Spellman, Knox, and small ball lineups.
Randle is not long term, so why are we spending minutes on him?
He is not a defender, spacer, or ball mover.
So why keep him?

He's an effective finisher on the interior and can provide scoring for us. His defense is bad, but I'm not sure its Toppin bad yet. I want to develop our players, but they should still earn minutes and I think Thibs can get him into a position where he'll be a better ball mover anyway. I don't mind trading him, but I'd either want a first in that deal or to get a player who could provide similar value IMO.
I’d rather see if we can get Devonte Graham than second rounders- he’s a restricted FA after this season, don’t see the Hornets able to offer him a big contract plus their backcourt is crowded now.

I think they would rather move off of Terry Rozier. Insofar as I understand, Graham was their lead PG with Terry more of a combo/SG. Graham will make a lot less than the $18M.

Yep, they would, but I'd be hoping we hold the leverage (though OKC being a rival is really annoying- haven't they benefited enough from absorbing contracts?!?!)- Rozier is an extra $20mil next season on top of Batum's 27mil this season- we'd be taking a double hit to help them out- they need to give up more than 2nd rounders for that.
If the Knicks really liked Vernon Carey, could they get the draft rights to him in a move to facilitate the Hayward signing?
