Who are the 5? Elf, DSJr, Frank?
I don't get the 5
Rivers can give you spot minutes at PG, so I'll count him as .5. I'd feel better if he was counted 1/3 of a PG, but our roster is what it is right now. IQ isn't a PG at this point, tho that could change as the season moves forward. Powell...I don't know. Harper is here for now and he is definitely a lead guard. I'd say we have 3.5 guys we can list as "point guards" going in, with a few wild cards. In retrospect, I'd say we should have tried to sign Shabazz Napier over Rivers. But who knows what the next move is. Elf is as good a tank commander as any, so I'm not really worried yet.
Quickley has been a PG his whole life. Look at his HS stats/games. Didn't he average like 7 assists? It was only under Calipari that he was only used to shoot and not really look to distribute. In any case I think we might be too getting caught up with the doing old "is he a PG or a SG? He can both destribute and shoot? So he is neither?" I think in today's age it's more position less. RJ is gonna be our version of Harden, kinda like Rose was in Chicago and everyone else will need to make those 3's/putbacks/lobs.Well, think of it this way: Calipari decided Hagan's was better on ball. Yes, he played PG in highschool. But you look at his clips at Kentucky and you can see he still has work to do if he wants that role. I'm not saying he won't get there. I can easily see him defending the opposing 1 while someone else orchestrates the offense. The kid works hard. I am saying that as of now, we shouldn't count on him as a 1.
I think you have to assume that Barrett will be ballhandling more in this lineup. The amorphous term for PG is more about defensive matchups than ball handling. I think the PG slot becomes more important when Barrett is off the court. I think you may be seeing Payton/Randle together as the second unit once Toppin gets caught up to speed. Payton's flow with Randle is one of the few reasons he makes sense.

You think they acquired 4 additional potential Ball handlers to turn around and make RJ do it.
That's like Buying a car and still taking the bus and train to get around.

They didn’t acquire 4 additional ball handlers. I own a car and use it to get to the train. Besides, none of these “cars” are elite passers. So, not sure what the argument is.
Specifically:
Payton was already on the team. I think re-signing him is more about Randle than Payton. Neither is a long term solution for the Knicks. A healthy Payton has a lot of upside. But, I don’t expect him and RJ to share the court very often.
Quickley can handle the ball but has shown a real prowess for moving without the ball. I do t know if he is an immediate addition to the rotation though the Knicks could use his shooting. I believe we will see him and Austin Rivers, also more an offball guard, fighting over the same minutes. I’d expect Rivers and Quickley to be offball guards while playing with Barrett.
Who else did we “add” that is a ball handler per se?
DSJ will have the ball in his hands while on the court. Just not clear to me if he is earning that bid out of training camp.
Ntlikina has already been moved off ball for most of his minutes.
So, I still think the RJ will be handling the ball more.

Getting CP or Westbrick- that would be buying that car. Right now we have no car. Dude where is my car?
I am not sold on our new young guards as much as others on this board. I was never really a huge fan of small combo guards besides the really really great ones. I get it though. Stock up on as much as possible and see if you have something. I’d still like to see Frank take the starting spot and become a leader. The stuff Alan Hahn tells us is scary though. I hope he’s wrong but I have a feeling he isn’t.
Please RJ.... please please please take a few steps forward. Please? Pretty please?

Who are these ball handlers they acquired? Quickley is a Shooting Guard. Ditto for Rivers and Kidd-Ghilchrist

Only fun to the season is if Barrett and Toppin play well otherwise what??
Yep, the team is a disaster, but there is a silver lining. Maybe we end up with a Top 3 pick.
Trying to find a rotation that makes sense on this team is not easy. Obi becoming a small ball Center is probably his best fit. He just doesnt have the lateral movement to Guard the perimeter. He looks like the broken down version of Amare on defense. I think he does have some potiental as a Shot Blocker so I would let him backup Mitch there

Be it at center or at power forward, teams are gonna pick and roll him as long as they can score at will or go to the foul line. The defense has to cover for him and he's got to work his ass off to improve in that area because he's brutal on defense.

That Briggs and the Rainman can continue on getting inflamed by the same stuff is incredible. Rainman thinks Perry alone if removed would somehow release the knicks from ignorance?
dude, we cleaned house. Get over it.
Briggs, what did you really expect?
Berman, Plan A was that grandiose? Paul and MElo? Really? Then he’d right a scathing article about how old and how we are getting fooled by retreads.
Than what? does nobody have any imagination that young players actually can improve? Some will, some won’t.
Really?
What’s going on here? well pick and choose. I find great enjoyment in watching young players develop even if its ugly sometimes. Franks Washington game last season was fun as hell. When Knox makes. Good defensive play, or RJ gets to the basket and fouled.
When mitch hits his first 15 footer. When Obi starts dunking. Sure he’ll is some assignments on Defense.
WHen Dennis his a floater in the lane or makes an transition pass.
Can’t tell people how to watch but this is how I enjoyed last season and look forward to seeing rookies and some of our knicks step up. When they don’t, there will be others behind them.

You take great enjoyment in watching our young guys get blown out every yr, make a million mistakes get traded and not resigned.
And here's how stupid you sound, NAME ONE PLAYER THAT WE HAVE DEVELOP IN THE 7 YR PLAYOFF DROUGHT THAT YOUR SO PROUD OF, that has change the culture of the franchise, that you enjoy watching.
You should be saying Frank had a hell've a season last yr, instead he had 2 or 3 games HE played AVERAGE, and your giddy with optimism..lmao

“They took a conservative approach by signing one-year, stopgap players,’’ ESPN’s cap guru and former Nets assistant GM Bobby Marks told The Post. “This is a huge year for RJ [Barrett], [Kevin] Knox and Obi from a development stage. It’s important for the young kids to develop this season. That will be the draw to free agents."

I find my joy where I choose. YOu find your misery in the past. what’s done is done. The record speaks for itself. Seems you don’t want to watch games until they win. That your choice. Seems you don’t watch many games. Your choice.
If the knicks did all those wonderful things you pray for we’d have a better record. The Captain obvious act you do is comical. I take the bait. You drink the chum.
