Knicks · Toppin and Barrett two very good building blocks (page 1)

BRIGGS @ 12/7/2020 8:56 PM
I’m not sure Toppin and Robinson is a good match
But we definitely have two good physical young players
We’ll have to see about Robinson although he has excellent potential himself
I’m not sure we’re gonna win too many games
But atleast there is something to tune in for this year
Have to see if other guys layers like Knox etc. can finally be a better part

Yeah, I expect some thrills along the route as we tank our way to Cade or one of the Jalens. I think Robinson will be a godsend for Obi due to his ability to protect the rim and provide help defense. On the flip side, it could also mean more fouls for Mitch. Obi is a good and willing passer, so I could see them as C list version of Blake and DeAndre.

GustavBahler @ 12/7/2020 9:27 PM
A good PG will help make Toppin/Robinson work. They will learn each other's tendencies, and hopefully make a good tandem. If it doesnt work out, at least the FO tried before making a move.

This is usually when we do a full reset and jetison the youth movement, with a new regime. For once that hasnt happened, yet anyway.

Barrett is a born leader. I see him being more vocal this year.

Dupe @ 12/7/2020 10:22 PM
We actually have a few hungry guys though young have some experience now. It could be fun to see if they step up. We might not be bottom dwellers. Even so, potentially much more watchable.
Knixkik @ 12/8/2020 7:52 AM
I expect Barrett and Toppin to have the right personalities to begin the turnaround here. I believe they are 2 great building blocks. Mitch can be as well, but he’s more of a complimentary piece both in style and personality. He will never be a team leader. It will fall on Barrett and Toppin. I will never understand why teams like the Cavs and Bulls pass up Toppin, especially in a draft like this one. Maybe the guys they take end up being stars. I’m not complaining. Toppin just feels like a guy that teams overthought despite being the best player available starting at #4.
EwingsGlass @ 12/8/2020 8:07 AM
I love that Toppin has a 7’4 wingspan to go with his athleticism.

I don't quite understand why you don't see a fit...

Barrett and Toppin are attack oriented players and high octane... throw Chandler into the mix... I think we pretty much just need to add a playmaker and support guys that can shoot. We're an unfinished product. Just take a look at the guys that will be here for sure in 2-3 years... I think Toppin and Barrett fit essentially because I could see them playing for Lob City or Nash's Suns...

Briggs saw some comps to Amare and then stuck on clogging the middle.
Philc1 @ 12/8/2020 10:20 AM
wierd. I keep getting told the Knicks have the league’s worst roster

Got to assume for Cleveland it was a back and forth decision. But reality is they are awful defensively and have Love at the 4 already, signed for 3 more seasons and he aint going anywhere.

Strangely Cleveland wants to win now and maybe Toppin was most ready but at the same time Okoro would have similar immediate impact?

Not sure.

I guess with Bulls they thought they had a young player with upside who maybe would come off bench and play the 3 or 4 for a season? They got to figure out their big rotation with Wendall Jr, Lauri Markkanen, Felício, Thaddeous.

sure.. its young, unproven and lacks a clear superstar blue chip type of guy. I am 100% fine with all of that and where we are. Toppin and Quickley might be really good NBA players but its not likely they are next year. RJ and Mitch are starters that need to take big steps forward but I think most expect to see some of that continue. Nobody knows what to expect from Knox/Frank/DS/Iggy but I do expect with some good coaching and the developmental staff we have in place for some of these guys to show they belong.

The rest of the guys are cast offs but good role players. Rivers, Noel and Bullock are all guys that have deadline values to teams looking to bolster depth down the stretch. If we are able to get another late first rounder for one of them thats a huge win. Thats how you get lucky and find a VanVleet or Jimmy Butler type late in the draft, but having extra picks

This has merit. But at end of day let’s go with what we have. Hopefully upside surprise. If they worked well together and we can win games — that’s better

Let me go on record here and say that Amare comparison is a poor one. I know ,I know , that's what everyone and their mother say about him, but hear me out pls.

When we do comparisons we usually pick the player's ceiling and we find someone in the NBA who has achieved such ceiling already. Meaning we always compare players to their BETTER versions in the NBA. So by this logic Amare is Toppin's ceiling. Well the truth is far from it.

A) shooting : Amare is a much worse shooter from 3( more like Julius Randle ) Obi is already better from 3
B) post moves : Amare has no post game to speak of. I know he tried that one year, he even worked with Oladjuwon. The result in the following season was a jumbo dose of spinovers before they became popularized by Randle ( Obi is already better)
C) finishing at the bucket: when Amare had Nash PnRing everyone to death he was super. Without Nash he was exposed and had to develop a mid range shot( which he did for all of half a season before Melo came)since without PnR he could not even get to the basket to finish, so this might be a draw.
D) Passing : Amare was a great example of a black hole( Randle says hello again) Obi is already a better passer.
E) Defense: yay, finally a good comparison, they are actually very similar in their deficiencies.

So out of 5 areas Topping is better at 3 and it's a draw at 2

P.s. I didn't realize that Randle is Amare 2.0 but yet that seems to be the case with Randle being a better rebounder.

Dupe @ 12/8/2020 3:22 PM
Amare’s pnr was a thing of beauty. I can see there is hope for that comp. While Toppin will need to hit some from the outside, I’m still expecting a lot of LJ from him down low.
BigDaddyG @ 12/8/2020 3:29 PM
I'm expecting Kenyon Martin with more range on offense. On defense...I'm just hoping for effort.

If Obi becomes Amare 2.0 it would be a disappointment because he would need to regress in 3 areas and not improve in 2.

guy was the primary scorer on many 50+ win teams. Wasnt healthy for the Knicks but the one he was healthy he was a top 10 player. You make him sound like trash. The dude was a HOF player if he stayed healthy. 6x all star, 4x 2nd all NBA, 1x first all NBA, ROY... please. If Toppin follows in Amare's footsteps people here will be quite pleased.

Yeah, the same traitor who lost his pride so he can sit on a bench and pretend to be enamored by Kyrie's memoir, "Journeys through a Flat Earth."

For me both Amare and Kenyon had some raw strength and burst that are elite when they were healthy. I don't think Obi has that strength but we shall see.

True. Obi is only like 220, I think. On the other hand, he seems to have more utility off the dribble. Hopefully that helps get him by early on.
