Most of us have wanted him gone, but he’s responded well to Thibs approach and seems to be doing the things well that we all hoped. He’s making quicker decisions with the ball, not dribbling into traffic, not settling for tough contested mid range shots, and his weight loss seems to be helping him improve defensively. No doubt he’s been a winning player so far. That could change of course, we have been down this road to some extent before. But he was looking better last year under Miller and after Marcus Morris was traded.
I still think Payton needs to go as his two man game with Randle is frustrating beyond belief, and the lack of shooting will remain, but independently of that we are seeing growth from Randle. The question always has been if you can have a lineup with Mitch, Randle and Barrett and survive defensively and have proper spacing. Randle will be a below average 3pt shooter at best and Barrett, someday, can become average at best. It seems to me that Burks and eventually Quickley are the backcourt that really make sense as they each add above average 3pt shooting off both the dribble and catch, and enough playmaking where Randle doesn’t have to go overboard. In a league where most teams no longer have a true PG, and use multiple bigger guards and wings as playmakers, a lineup including Randle, Barrett, Burks and Quickley should provide plenty of playmaking and do fine on the defensive end as well. Obviously quickley has to prove he’s for real, and this lineup working is contingent on him becoming a good shooter in game and steady hand on both ends of the floor.
This isn’t to say Obi has become an afterthought or anything. He basically will be employed as 6th man for the foreseeable future with the way Randle is playing. If he ends up becoming so good that he forces his way into the lineup, great, Randle can become a 6th man himself eventually. But I think under the circumstances and with next years draft class drying up, we can’t rule out Randle returning if he plays at this allstar level. Maybe he is still the same player he has always been and this thread ages poorly, we will see.
I’ve always liked Randle. I feel he has really tried to become a more complete player this year and is showing his passing ability. Last Year he was productive but was obviously trying to do too much which led him dribbling into double or even triple teams. This year he is dishing out more but still picking his spots and scoring. I do wonder what his future is. Next year his contract is only partially guaranteed and we just drafted Obi. It depends on where we are. I do think he would be an attractive trade piece at the deadline to give us more assets. It will be interesting to see what happens. But I’m very happy with Randle right now
Randle is not a 6th man even if he was on the lakers( they would move AD to Center). I don't know any 20/10/4 players that come of the bench unless this is the olympics.
It's obviously Better Coaching, Maturity, Film watching, familiarity with most of the roster, and practice, practice, practice, thats where it starts.
The team seems to be developing better habits (like going back in the gym right after a loss and putting up 250+ shots). As long they do what Thibs says, they will continue to get better, and Randle will be the Guy that may attracts a few decent FA. Their not a lot of PF in the East putting up those #s. He may have a shot at a All Star Nod

He will be an all-star this year if the Knicks are in the .500 range. Obviously I don't expect that, but if they were he would obviously be the biggest reason. I believe Barrett will eventually be an all-star, but certainly not this year or even next.
Randle has taken a lot of heat because of the times he drives into the lane and puts up a bad spin shot or turns the ball over, but people are not recognizing that he's being asked to be the #1 option on this team when he's really more like a #3 option. He does most of his efficient scoring around the basket. The Knicks have had terrible spacing with Mitch at C and no good 3 point shooters. As we improve our shooting he's going to get better. With coach Thibs, he'll be more under control too. He's a good player.

Yes, he gets credit from me. He is using his head a lot more and he’s putting his talent to use. If he plays consistently well this season, we will probably have to extend him.

I disagree....Randle could be 6th man of the year. Was just talking to a friend and laker fan. And laker fans know his weaknesses best.
But I agree he has grown and IQ has increased. And he looks more coachable right now. Came into season in shape. And becoming a playmaker from the forward position is nice to have. His jumper is money...looks like everything is clicking right now.
Randle passing out is gettin very good at times. Give defense credit when they shut down the passing lanes. Randle looks good when knicks are shooting well. This was Fiz’s vision also and not exclusive to Thibs. Its also about who is on the court and execution.

Believe I started the first positive thread about Randle this season. Said he was being a leader, and sharing the rock. Leading the break. He's avoiding the spinovers, and passing out of double teams. Has to watch out for teams anticipating that move. This version of Randle's game makes me want to see the Knicks extend him.
Randle isnt trying to earn a new deal by mostly calling his own number, inflating his stats, like Derrick Rose did. So when I see Randle playing unselfish, ball, efficient, making an impact. Im not so worried about it being a contract year. Dont see him alienating Thibs, as soon as he has his money.
My take is that before Thibs he was asked to do TOO much. Seems hes built up a trust with these guys and Thibs because it seems that he knows where his teammates are on the floor for the better shot.

I’m not sure if he was asked to do too much or he felt he had to do more since he was the big signing of the 2019 offseason. Either way he seems to have figured out that it’s better to be a complete players and not to dribble into double teams or at least dish it much more which he is doing very well at

I couldn’t stand him but I was one of the few that thought we should start him over Toppin before preseason game number 1.
He played awful despite the stats last season. He showed glimpses of that awfulness this preseason. It’s understandable people don’t trust him. He still gets credit from me. He is hopefully changing.
he is really not that old. Just 4 years off from the youth movement. He is 6-8 can score pass and dribble. If he buys into being part of our system and not being selfish no reason he can’t stay a knick. Not that many pf coming from college or that wants to play for us can provide what he brings.

Last years Randle was a 6th man. This years Randle is playing like an all star so far. It’s not because of 20-10-4. There are players that can produce on bad teams due to massive usage. What separates is the decisions with the ball and ability to space the floor. Right now he is doing those things at a high level. Even without quality PG play. Because rather than doing a spin over into triple coverage to get his. He’s kicking the ball out to the perimeter. He’s doubled his ast per game from 3-6. He’s hitting his 3s.l and even putting work on defense. Aka everything that is asked of him when speaking on being a starter and more which is why he is in All Star consideration.
As Knicks1248 would say “This is how I would like my PF to play”
My position still stands. He is our BEST player. Always felt that Fiz screwed him up by asking him to be a Point Forward. Also think that he felt he had to be the alpha due to his large contract and him being the highest profile player. If you watched some of the games with Morris last year, you would have seen where he trusts other players. But once Morris was gone, he tried to do too much on his own. Including handling the ball and three point shooting.
It was a joke for some to say he should be coming off the bench. That just some hater shit. Some also forget he is only 26.
Right now Randle is playing like an all star version of Anthony Mason.
He’s gotta keep up the good work. I’d rather be happily surprised and keep him longer term
