Knicks · Barrett is deep under the Mendoza line (page 1)

BRIGGS @ 12/31/2020 9:50 PM
He’s good at the hoop— everything else on offense he’s a .200 hitter
Knixkik @ 12/31/2020 10:13 PM
If he attacks the hoop the rest of his offense will follow. He is making plays and rebounding well so that’s good. But for some reason he always starts out trying to get going from 3pt when he should be attacking first to get going. He’s not playing to his strengths. But he’s only 20.
Uptown @ 12/31/2020 10:24 PM
When a below average long distance shooter takes too many tough, contested shots, you get 40% fg shooter. Rjs strength is playing bully ball and slashing to the basket. Would like to him run some pick n rolls to get him closer to the basket. Its painful watching him right now...Hope he gets it together soon.

And there’s still a Payton problem. Teams are clogging the middle and playing zone. Rj can’t fully take advantage of his strengths until you have a PG in there that can really shoot.

Uptown @ 12/31/2020 11:20 PM
Also...Thibs aint doing RJ any favors...surrounding RJ with Payton, Bullock and Randle aint creating any gaps for RJ to get to the basket. When we get healthy, Thibs should not start Payton, RJ and Bullock together...

He will be at his best with a Quickley/ Burks back court.

Played hard even when he his shot was an abomination. Everything will come in due time.

He has missed 21 straight 3's. He does contribute in more ways than 1 but that is horrendous

Payton’s shooting in the 2 games we won was an aberration. Last night and first 2 games when he couldn’t put the ball on the ocean is what he really is

As for RJ. I want to see what he does with an actual pg like Quickley who can shoot

What do we do with Barrett? 0 for 21 in 3's. He's not a shooter. When good shooters have off nights, their shots are in the ball park but when he misses they are truly klunkers with no touch on the ball.

Sometimes he won't even hit the rim and worse yet he will throw up air balls. These are not signs of a cold night just a bad shooter. Don't know if his rebounding, defense, or going to the hoop can overcome his lack of outside presence.

But look at the free throw shooting. That’s a big step for his offense. And typically that will translate to better outside shooting down the road. He’s 20. He might be 24/25 before he gets there.

He hasta learn that when the jumper aint going to help the team in other ways. He will learn.
Knixkik @ 1/1/2021 11:06 AM
He hasn’t actually had an off-season with the new coaching staff too. I’m sure Johnny Bryant is looking forward to real development time with him. At 20 time is on his side. Talent isn’t an issue, and I don’t think work ethic is either.
Knicksfan @ 1/1/2021 11:20 AM
Hadn’t he worked on his jumper in the offseason?

He is pressing too much to be a shooter, which he doesn’t have to be to be effective.

I would like to think I could miss 21 straight 3s. Probably, I would look far worse doing so.

Given today's NBA, every player in the off season should be shooting and working on their shot. It's not like they need to work a second job?

8 hours a day to practice, lift weights - and shoot.

I agree, I think he is pressing some. Part of this is likely mental.

But today, I hope Thibs is working with guys on how to attack the zone - you don't have to take the open 3 to do it!

Allanfan20 @ 1/1/2021 12:49 PM
He needs to work on it during intense in-game situations. His form is good and it’s showing with his free throws.

He has no lanes to go to the basket. It would definitely help to have Quick, Burk and Obi back.

It's about his timing on his release and his confidence. Basketball is so much more mental than people would like to believe. You notice how when 1 or 2 of your main players brick their first few perimeter shots, all of a sudden everyone on the rosters is bricking shots, and visa versa when they hit the first few shots.

ccch @ 1/1/2021 3:54 PM
Thibs has a decision with the Barrett minutes. Most likely they stay pretty high - but as a coach, do you ever start dissuading the 3 point effort?

This might tell us a lot if Thibs is the right guy to turn us around.
