Knicks · What I know for sure about our future (page 1)

Starters

1. C Mitchel Robinson is our starting center. He is a double double every night. He need to expand 1 more skill set to get him to a borderline all star level. Learn an offensive shot.

2. Pf Randle Whether you like Randle or want him gone he is only 26 and is a all star.

Bench

PF toppin don’t know much but if he can give us half of Randle production off the bench we going places

Sf Knox has arrived as a solid rotational piece who would be a beast on a team with 2 superstars.

C ( luka Garza ) research him

SG RJ barret currently looks like a bust for a number 3 pick. But what I know is he would dominate as the backup sg and sf. If he ever learns to shoot he could be a super star. Right now he is a killer off the bench who can’t shoot but can get you buckets.

Pg Quickley is a high level backup pg in the nba. Perfect for what we need him to be.

Which leaves 2 issues

1. We need a stud pg from college or we sign a high level vet

2. We need a elite level sf/sg who is dominant and can (shoot from 3)

As bad as it seems we are right there. We don’t need to trade away the team and all our picks

What we need to do is get this draft right and sign a good player with cap space

We are losing currently because other teams are more proficient from 3.....

Fix this and we will get wins

4 game losing streaks after a over achieving 5-3 is a bummer but you pretty much have a rationalist view.
I cannot call 20 year old RJ who has yet to play 82 games a bust. Not even close. A better team wold bring him along slower.
He is getting a lot of reps to work thru it and its painful at times to watch.
KnickBust for now is Dennis. Really he has been consistently bad.
Frank plays consistent elite defense, is just 22, and has shown the potential.
Knox is improving is also very young.

Does that mean they all stick? Not saying that. We 10 games into a weird ass season. I thought we’d be fortunate to win 25 games this season. My bar was low and thus I’m not devastated as some are.

I agree with you.

I am or was rooting for dsj but he has disappointed. May have to walk away.

Frank still can be on the 13-15 Man roster. He has a reliable skill set

I don’t believe Barrett has been put in position to succeed to this point and therefore can’t be judged yet. To me he’s a starting level/ star level upside player until he proves otherwise. He deserves the benefit of the doubt and hasn’t played enough games yet to be labeled otherwise. Barrett and Quickley could be the backcourt of the future. But we are definitely missing another elite shooting/ playmaking wing player or lead guard badly. But the other pieces for the future are here. Again, we have actually overachieved at 5-7 and Barrett has been the second best player within that. The franchise is absolutely moving in the right direction.

Our guys are still so young. They have had 9 games of real coaching their entire lives.

Honestly, we are adding a starter and a rotation piece in the draft.

No matter how good Obi is, he's not going to be as good as Haliburton. Rookies never show poise like this unless they are future all stars. He can play with anyone and it would have solved our point guard problem for 10 years. We did this with Knox taking him over Mikal Bridges. When you can lock in a winner and a guy that does the little things you take him.

Thibs is doing RJ a disservice right now. When he's not shooting well his minutes need to be reduced. I would like to see him in the post more and playing less with randle. He should be playing 30 minutes a night right now tops.

Free Agents don't really exist next season. Unless you're re-uniting Derozen and Lowry here for $55-60MM between the two of them. So move Payton and Noel and just let the kids play with Randle. Secure another asset for Burks and then re-evaluate in the offseason.

Trade Randle or Trade RJ and Obi.

That's basically how I see it

I don't. Barrett and Randle have shown some improved chemistry. The issue is the supporting cast around them. Can't cut it with a Payton/Bullock or Rivers backcourt. That's probably the worst guard lineup in the league by a mile. Toppin will have to prove himself before any judgments can be made, but if he turns into a high level scorer he will be an excellent 6th man for a few years.

HofstraBBall @ 1/14/2021 11:31 AM
This breakdown has just put everything into prospective. I will go into a deep depression now.

So basically we have Randle who is somewhat proven and playing well and then a whole bunch of question marks. Just like every other year since 2000. Smh

TPercy @ 1/14/2021 11:41 AM
I’m still very optimistic about our team. Only reservation again is the Mitch Randle and RJ fit. Some have brought up that getting 2+ good shooters will be enough but seeing teams pack 3+ players in the paint every time Randle or RJ drives in recent games is still giving me pause. Even the Randle and Mitch combo is quite iffy to me considering the fact that I can’t think of any top team with such lackluster spacing at the 4 and 5. It’s still very early and we are yet to see Burks and Rivers/IQ in same lineup so we’ll see

This! They don't complement each other in any way

Nalod @ 1/14/2021 1:04 PM
Mikail Bridges is 25 and he got a whole lot better with Chris Paul controlling the rock and let’s not forget he got Booker and Ayton who is very very good.
PHX and Bridges has 4 guys he plays with that are better than any knick at their position except Randle at PF. He is full 3 years older than Knox. If Bridges was on knicks he’d be like Frank. Good defense and we’d be slamming him too.
PUt Knox with a HOF pg, a future HOF Booker (All guys that have scored 70 pts are in HOF) etc......with a good coach and he’d be looking a whole lot better too!!!!
For the record I wanted Mikail also but thats not what happened.
jskinny35 @ 1/14/2021 1:18 PM
I also wanted Mikail because he was known to play defense and seemed to have a lot of 3D potential. Knox has shown some signs of life this year so that's encouraging. We probably set his development backwards even further by letting him play the way he did his rookie season. They say it takes double the time in duration to break/change habits that you possess... so he should be good to go by 2024 :)

Barrett and Randle were not getting us past Philly and the Celtics and even the Raptors beat them. Now Brooklyn went and built the only legit big three in the league.

The glass half full isn’t a proper response.

Honestly the smartest responses are trade Randle and pray we can draft a 1A star for Out youth to play next to our youth.

Or

Trade youth and picks for Beal and then use our cap space to add more talent around a core of Randle and Beal this FA.

JesseDark @ 1/14/2021 1:49 PM
Our current tailspin coincides with the injury to Alex Burke. With him in the lineup I can see us sniffing the 8th seed. He may not be our long term answer but is good enough until that future dead a33 shooter from 3 is drafted.
