Seems like he has the confidence, work ethic and skill set to become an elite guard. The player development in place gives me confidence as well. His game yesterday really showed an arsenal that few players have between the 3 level scoring and ability to draw fouls like only a star would. And he’s getting the calls which says a lot. The question becomes does he have the physical ability to get there or are there limitations ? What do we need to see from him in order to feel like he’s a true star guard vs a Lou Williams type scoring spark ?
Bro got one 30 point game in his career, let’s sit back and enjoy
Don't know about star but he is clearly the best guard we have right now. He is a rookie so he will have his ups and downs but he needs to be getting more minutes than he is currently.

I definitely am. Just asking the question, what do we need to see from him to feel confident in his ability to become elite ? He’s 3rd behind Luka and Zion in points per 36 mins for players under 22. How long does he need to sustain that production?

Check back in in a couple of years?

Or even later in the season. Anyway, I get it. When is the last time we had a rook jump out of the gate? RJ and Mitch started all right, but otherwise we are either looking at projects or not much. Fun to be excited about one of our own! So far so good....
I'm too lazy too look back, but I remember having these conversations about Alonzo Tried. All we can do is sit back and watch the kid grow. Between you and me, I definitely believe he has Steph Curry potential
Quickley has 1 more 30pt game than RJ Barrett, Mitch, and Frank combined.
Interestingly, DSJ and Knox both have career highs of 31 points - and all see how those two do not currently look like future stars or even starters at the moment.
Glad we saw Barrett sit in teh 4th last night. Not punishment I hope, but give the kid a rest. Team is forging its own identity on different nights. Last night Quick felt it. Next he might look bad.
HE don’t need “More minutes” or start.
I’ve been saying this for weeks, just enjoy not second guessing but what comes of it over time.
His body type at 21 looks ok but we don’t know. The eye test does not definitively say he has the “it” factor that a young Steph, Kyrie or has. Maybe a Nash type but I’m not seeing him slice thru people quite like a young tony Parker either (just watched doc so he on my mind).
Worried? Naw, its fun to watch!

It’s really surprising Barrett has yet to score 30, but I know he has a ton of games in the upper 20s. But his lack of outside shooting probably prevents huge scoring outbursts. Quickley is a knockdown shooter which gives him more opportunities for big scoring nights. Doing it in only 24 minutes is most impressive though.
Quickly reminds me a bit of Sprewell and the pace he played with us and the year we went to the finals - Sprewell just had a relentlessness in his attacking pace.
I kinda wish we had some other players that could keep up - like MR should be getting out and running more, it seems.

Exactly. I was a big fan of the pick at the draft and he had obviously made a lot of experts eat crow so far but it’s still way too early to know what he will be ultimately

Clearly if he keeps up this pace, we're looking at a future all-time great. :)
But back to reality - compared to the others on that exclusive list, Quickley is achieving his per 36 numbers in limited minutes. He only averaged 17.8mpg, so we're basically saying his performance will scale if he doubles his minutes. At some point you'd expect him to get tired, right?
Maybe he could do it. I mean, with his stroke, maybe it's a good game plan to give him the green light to stroke it from 30ft+ away before the defensive picks him up - a la Steph Curry or Trae Young. He has a repeatable quick release and even though it's a little unorthodox looking, his feet are balanced and he clearly feels good doing it. (playing this way takes a lot less energy than cutting and moving without the ball.

I guess it all depends on what your definition of elite guard is.
Feel like IQ will show us high level 3point shooting to go with a floater that will be deadly. He will draw fouls and every other team besides the Knicks will hate him.
Can he finish at the rim? How well can he run PnR and how well can he run an offense. Those things will define his high level capabilities IMHO
Don't think he has a first step to just blow by defends but he is quick enough and savvy enough to figure out how to position himself well enough.
Can he figure out how to utilize the likes of Mitch and Obi the way Harden has done with Capela, etc.?
Those things will all tell us how high he can go.
IMHO, Knicks still need another high level starting PG to go along with Quickley.

Agree - he is developing nicely but there are a lot of other variables to becoming a star level player. Teams will adjust to his floater and then we'll see how he does. Lots of steps still but at worst he seems to be a very good combo (Lou Williams-type) guard off the bench. Being the best offensive PG on this team doesn't say that much but fingers crossed!

I agree. Burks can be a solid stopgap but we need another elite guard, and one that can shoot.

IMHO Knicks need two more wings in this upcoming draft and hopefully one of them is a high level PG. It's pie in the sky to want Suggs or Cade but by golly help me please Tankathon!
And if 2 wings are drafted, I'm still hoping for an offseason FA signing like Otto Porter if the right type of contract can be had. I'm guessing his starting would be in the $20M range.

I’m a big fan of Porter. He would be a nice SF as long as people are good with Barrett as a SG long term.
