Knicks · Who complements Randle? (page 1)

Knicksfan @ 2/8/2021 8:40 AM
We all know where we were before the season began:

Go full time with the youth. Obi and R.J. are the future. Trade Randle for a can of beans as soon as you can, along with Payton.

While the Payton cry hasn't changed, Randle has dramatically changed his game this season to the point of justifying a change in the long-term rebuilding plan. So this is a post about a scenario where we not only keep Randle past next season, but make him one of our centerpieces. But this team certainly needs another main piece. In a perfect world, Randle is the star #2 and RJ is the solid #3 to be the main leaders.

So, considering Randle's game as a Point -Forward who can shoot from anywhere and rebound with the best, who is the best guy to complement him considering not only his game but also his age? Randle is a young veteran still in his 20's.

knicks1248 @ 2/8/2021 8:53 AM
Shooters, spacing. I said last season that the spacing was brutal, especially with Mitch, Jordan, RJ, frank, knox, ellington, all struggle to shoot.

But some knicks fans wanted to put it all on Randle, with his spin move in traffic coughing up the ball

Most of Bullocks 3's, paytons 3's, Burks 3's come off a Randles passes.

Randle is playing the role Noah had under thibs

Realistically from what we can get in the trade market? Harrison Barnes can be a get
Knixkik @ 2/8/2021 9:32 AM
Randle's change is awesome, and he's part of the future here. It's so much like when we signed Allan Houston back in the days. The best compliment is shooters and off ball movers. We saw what he could do with Bullock. Danny Green who is an upcoming free agent would be a great fit. He moves really well without the ball and brings more shooting and defense. He's basically a better version of Bullock. Then draft Kispert, start Quickley, and the fit with Randle is much better.

C Robinson PF Randle G/F Barrett G/F Green PG Quickey

Bench: Rose, Kispert, Toppin etc.

Zach Lavine or someone that plays like Zach Lavine.

I like LaVine, my only concern is he takes the ball out of Randle's hands and may force him to stand around too much. LaVine is a shot creator though who can also shoot the three, so we need that.

It’s not perfect but I still think it’s the best fit.

If Suns would accept RJ, Toppin and some picks for Booker - his shooting is good enough to complement Randle while still being a shot creator. Lavine also of course - but his defense is worse than Bookers.

We do need the ball more out of Randle's hands at times. While he has definitely improved his passing - there would be better offensive flow with a guard handling more (especially one that creates more space from good outside shooting). Problem now is when RJ does handle - he also plays close to the basket and doesn't command much spacing. So you have our two biggest offensive threats operating from 15 feet in. Having 1 that operates more from outside would change things significantly imo.

The pressure on the defense would be substantially different if they're guarding a outside shooting SG from 20-24 feet vs Randle backing into the high post. Your angles and spacing is increased a bunch. Atl and GS have those guys that space out to 25-30 feet because you have to bring out the defense further. Randle would probably be amazing on a team like that. So while we may never have that - at least a PG or SG that is a threat when they cross midcourt and approach the 3 pt line would help immensely!

Maybe DRose complements Randle?
Maybe IQ and Rose at the same time. IQ is a combo guard. Rose is a combo guard. Randle is a combo forward. RJ is a wing, or combo. Maybe there is a world were Knox can hit his shot?

Would love to have Booker, but gotta keep RJ with whoever comes here.

Weirdly enough, Zach has been superior to Booker offensively this year. Not sure what's wrong with Booker this season. I would still prefer him too Lavine, but margin isn't huge. We're talking inches.

Trade for Otto Porter. Giving away picks for Rose was stupid bcause we could of got someone better

The pick that'll be a second rounder in the 40's?

EwingsGlass @ 2/8/2021 9:01 PM
Randle has changed my mind. He continues to grow as a player. He puts the work in.

Mitch Robinson actually fits pretty well with him, IMO as a low usage player with a high conversion rate, but more importantly, an anchor in the defense. On defense, Randle can float out a little further toward the 3pt line knowing that Mitch is their anchoring the D.

Bullock had a great game against the Heat, but hasn’t really been that great most of the season. Adding a pure 3&D PG and SF that can close out the perimeter and knock down the 3, further spacing the floor would help Randle a bit more would really help this team gel. Clearly the Knicks are doing well keeping opponents FG% down, so, I can’t get down on Bullock too much. But they could use a little firepower to go with their defense.

I mean, top choices would be Jrue Holiday and Kawhi Leonard, but there are other guys that can fill those roles, both through the draft, trade and free agency.

Yep, Rose is not worth a positive asset. He is a negative sum player

Yeah, we still have 2 firsts and Dets ‘2nd.. which is almost better than a 1st without a rookie scale contract attached to it.

It was unlikely the Knicks would actually draft 4 players that make the roster.

Sounds like the same problens post danphony era....with discount double check shooting 3s......Thats the SF this team needs. And RJ best position in my opinion, and probably most....RJ would dominate as a SG. Just needs to slim down and work on his lateral movements. But he would bully his way through other SGs....IQ and a low volume but high percentage 3 or mid range shooting SF....is the missing key! If Randle is your starting PF.

I'm starting to warm up to Randle long term as well. Which means obi will either have to learn SF or Center position....while backing up Randle...hoping his play will earn him mins somewhere. That will not hurt his development to backup Randle next year. And if obi is a star type talent, it will show in practice and in games. Im giving him 2 seasons...not 2 months....b4 i castrate him.

Would love to keep RJ and acquire Booker - but who's left that has value? Thread was around complementing Randle so maybe Mitch has some value?

I think the difference is Booker is still adjusting to playing with CP who shoots a lot and handles the ball more. Last season he was with Rubio who didn't shoot or dribble as much. Lavine has the ball 90% of the time and usually initiates the offense for Chi - I think that's the main difference but we'll see how things progress...
