Knicks · Barrett is useless (page 2)

I do think he has the ability to be an all star, just don't know if that happens here if doesn't start playing more consistent
I believe he ends up like a Middleton type where he's not really a star, but a high level starter that will be an all-star a couple times in the right situation. And i don't want to give up on that type of player. His improvement this year are very obvious, even with the duds.
1) Seems like he is more comfortable with the ball in his hands. A willing passer, but unclear what he is doing when off the ball, who’s is a lot as he is at best the 3rd ball handler on the floor at any given time. Not seeing a ton of off the ball movement. Feels like the Knicks have generally gotten a bit stagnant without the ball.
2) Feel like he has been letting the defense off the hook with softer shots that don’t draw contact and are bouncing off the rim. Could just be a function of tired legs. But the Barrett that makes me excited is getting deeper into the paint and finishing through contact. Seems like most of our guards are shying away from contact these days. Not just Barrett.
3) The interesting thing about the above is that I do not see him taking a moment off on defense. With the exception of the occasional miscue, he has been locked in on the ball and giving as much effort as I would ever want on defense. So, while I may be pointing out that I don’t see a ton of off the ball movement on offense, I see all the hustle on the defensive side. Notably, this is pretty much in line for all the starters.
I can’t promise Barrett will perfect his 3 or will stop having games where he is 1/9. But I think he is just showing signs of fatigue and is leaving that fatigue on the offense instead of defense. As he gets older and stronger, develops more stamina, he will be a forceful two way player. Someone mentioned Middleton above.

Basically we expect these guys to be great right away and will ultimately move them and the next team will benefit. At some point that trend needs to stop. And we aren't talking about Knox or Ntilikina here. Barrett has taken a major leap in the right direction this year. And that's without an organized offseason with the coaching staff. I want to see him get into the gym with Johnny Bryant all summer and see what the guy who turned Hayward, Lillard, and Mitchell into stars can do with Barrett before i judge further.

We have to play faster brand of basketball for RJ to really excel, we currently play a 90's style of ball where everything his a half court struggle. Even Frazier stated a couple times last night as to why they were not running, then he caught himself and said "THAT'S WHY THEY"RE THE SLOWEST TEAM IN THE LEAGUE".
It's embarrassing how slow we play, but that's because randle and payton are our primary ball handlers.

thank you. You get it. I appreciate this!
Its not even defending RJ so much as simply saying how stupid a point the OP is. Kid's 20 and has a great head and work ethic. Stupid Knick fans are like "ok we drafted some guys... where the part where we are playing in the finals vs. Lebron"

If you are trading him for Luka, Giannis, Jaylen Brown, Tatum or Donovan Mitchell then, sure, bring it on. Kawhi out of the older players. Beyond that, I do not see who would do better in his shoes for us longer term.

Agreed about the slow pace. It's why i'm a big advocate for Lonzo Ball. He would push the pace and also provide an increase in 3pt makes and good defense. Replace Bullock and Payton next year with Quickley and Ball and you improve the open floor game, 3pt shooting, and don't really lose anything on the defensive end. It would be a better compliment to Randle as well and especially Barrett. Barrett is actually very good moving without the ball, and Ball can get him easy buckets.

The only way to consistently play uptempo is it has to become 2nd nature, like they have to practice that everyday, it has to be the philosophy, doesn't matter who's on the floor
I remember when MDA had slow ass duhon as his PG, al harrington, david lee (players you won't mistake for speedy players) and we still were the fastest pace team, and avg the most points, we just couldn't defend.
What we have with Thibs is the very opposite, a bunch of avg defensive players playing elite defense because that's what they practice relentlessly, that's the kind of coach we got. I dont expect us to ever be a fast team under thibs but having shooters will help raise our scoring avg
Mike woodson won 54 games with the slowest team on the map, but shooters all over the court, Novak, JR, Melo, prigs, Kidd, felton.

I agree with your larger point...but RJ wasn't shooting 40% from 3
. I get it though, Randle became an all-star in year 7, Butler year 4 etc... the kids need time.

Profound.
Nobody becomes an all star anywhere if they don’t play consistent.

Good thing Mike is here to keep things slow!
More profoundness: “Having shooters will help raise our scoring avg”. I can see 1248 telling his knick friends “I keep telling these fools on the internet that if we score more points, you know, and keep this defense thing, and we avg more points then our opponents, we gonna win more than we lose”. He all sitting up straight, brush the crumbs off his lap, fix his hair, and say it with authority that all in earshot are in awe of such sage wisdom!
