I like this, but 1 2-3 zone and we may be in trouble.

This looks like a well-rounded team that with a good coach should be a good playoff team, but contender...very, very difficult.

Two of the five starters on this list, are putting up all-star numbers this season. RJ and Ball look to be on an All-Star trajectory.

Mitch and Noel are capable of being DPOY finalists.

Any team which is good enough to get to the ECF, with a shot at the Finals, is a contender. Our bench, in this scenario is good enough to start.

Dont see "very, very, difficult" to get there. We're a 4th-5th seed right now. One more year of seasoning for RJ and Quickley, add Lonzo and Derozan, we should have a dangerous squad. If this is what it looks like.

I'm just not comfortable signing a 32 year old combo forward who's played 11 years big money. That lineup is still limited and only, realistically, has a two year window at most. I don't see Ball as a future all star, but I can still see the appeal (especially is he's on a reasonable contract). I'd rather give Lowry the bag on a short term deal. This is the time where the Knicks need to be prudent and avoiding the temptation of making a big splash.

We get Ball by trading all 4 of our picks for next year?

The only starter we have to worry about "ageing out" is Derozan, so I dont see the narrow window you do. Ball's improvement has been mostly about efficiency. He gets better every season. Even if he misses an All-Star team, he can still get this squad on the same page.

As I said upthread, wouldnt want Derozen for more than 3 years. Might draft his replacement.

We would have talent on both sides of the ball.

The window narrows because cap space ties up on a depreciating asset. Eventually, Randle's is going to max and RJ is going to finish his rookie deal. Even if Derozan signed for a two-year deal, it will complicate things. Big thing with this lineup is that you see Lonzo as a full-time PG and I see him as secondary/tertiary ball handler. This team will need to upgrade. Like I said, even if the front-office wanted to throw a short-term bag at a player, I would rather do it for someone like Lowry or Conley. DeRozan's fit is questionable and I don't see the wisdom of betting on a round peg fitting a square hole.

I like Derozan and think he would be a good fit, but those two guys you mentioned are my first choice. Your two main PGs would be veterans Conley/Rose, everyone else would be young guys and you have at least 2 rookies coming on the roster as well.

So you're concerned about Derozan's age, and the alternative you suggest. Is to pass on a quality PG, who Magic says has the highest bball IQ at that position, in the league. Great D.So we can return to a very old Knicks tradition. Putting all our hopes in an aging PG. Both of them being in their mid 30s. Older than Derozan.

Derozan is a "depreciating asset" if he plays poorly. Your assigning his future trade value before a single game has been played. He plays well for 2 seasons (not a stretch), we can move Derozan as an expiring contract, if necessary.

I would much rather take our chances with Lonzo going forward, then yet another aging PG. Its once again kicking the can down the road. Tired of that strategy myself.

Magic drafted Ball...what would you expect him to say. Both Lowry and Conley are playing well and the fill clearly defined needs. Derozan replicates many of the skill sets of the Knicks to best players. Plus he sucks at defense. If the Knicks decide to spend the money on an aging star, they mind as well do it on one who fills multiple needs on the roster.

Not disagreeing with you but where is Derozan's D by the numbers? I really doubt Magic would leverage his rep to say something like that. If he wasnt maybe the greatest PG ever, I might agree with you. He's made bad calls before as an exec. But as a HOF PG, I take Magic at his word.

This article details DeRozan's troubles on defense by the numbers. He just has bad IQ on that end. As for Lonzo, well just have to wait and see. At the very least, we can both agree he's not there yet. Maybe he does get there eventually, but a quality PG wouldn't hurt as he develops if the Knicks sign him.
