Knicks · Salary cap this summer (page 1)

xavier @ 3/15/2021 9:40 AM
We currently have $ 49.44 million in active contracts for next season. These are Rivers, Barrett, IQ, Knox, Brazdeikis, Randle, Toppin and Mitchell. Randle and Rivers are not guaranteed contracts, but Randle will of course be here. For Rivers, it is questionable depending on other moves and plans. Mitchell and Brazdeikis have a team option and I’m not sure if we’ll take the option for Braz even though he doesn’t even have a particular cap hit. As I’ve written before, we’re very likely not going to take Mitchell’s option and he will be RFA this summer so he won’t be UFA next summer. In addition, we have the last installment of Noah's stretch of 6.43 million.

It’s hard for me to imagine Thibs won’t keep Rose so there will also be his cap hold or a contract of around 7 million (I guess he’ll get the amount roughly as he does now). Free agents include Bullock, Burks, Noel, Ntilikina, Payton and Gibson. Payton is, I hope, a thing of the past. I believe we will try to keep Noel and Bullock even though Bullock could cost a lot more than he does now. I honestly have no idea what the plans are with Ntilikina, and for Gibson I believe he won’t be needed, but that doesn’t mean Thibs won't keep him.

As I wrote, Rose will probably have about 7, as likely Noel if she stays, and Bullock easily possibly more than that (let's say 10 million). In addition, it is easily possible that we will do some trade before the deadline, which will again change the situation on the cap. There are no top free agents to chase for this summer anyway, but we should take advantage of the space on the cap. I know many here have big plans for summer 2022, but I’m afraid we won’t have room for anything significant anymore.

So for this summer, if we add Rose, Noel and Bullock plus two rookies to the players who have contracts for next season and Noah's strech, we are already at 85 million without Frank, Payton, Gibson and Burks. If we sign some of them as well (or they stay on the cap as a hold), we really don’t have too much space left. And this is without a new Mitchell's contract because I guess he can be patient for a few days and then sign a contract that I believe will be around 20 million per season.

Knixkik @ 3/15/2021 10:02 AM
I expect us to keep Rose, Noel, and either Bullock or Burks, but probably not both. Wouldn't be surprised if the Knicks continue to take a conservative approach and continue to replace 1-year guys with other 1-year contract guys. My guess is Leon Rose and WWW have a couple of players in mind that they believe they can eventually convince to join the Knicks, but it may not be for a couple of years. LaVine, Beal, and Rozier are guys i'm keeping an eye on in summer 2022 but Booker or Towns I think are the primary goal of the front office when you consider prior relationship. Either of those will just take longer. I still see Gibson filling out a depth big man spot. I don't think Ntilikina will be back. He just can't put anything together for a consistent stretch.

You think Mitch is getting 20 mill, a guy who's avg 8pts and 8 rbs, not to mention we actually have a better record without him (9-4) then with him (12-15).

I would give him no more than a 2 yr 15 mill deal

Mitch is a good player. I love the Mitch/Noel combo at center. 20 is definitely too much. I think 3 years at 12-15 per year is most appropriate, but i think the Knicks front office will take a very conservative approach with him for a new contract.

xavier @ 3/15/2021 10:56 AM
OK, I went for the worst case scenario (for the team), there will probably be something below that, but not much. Below 15 per season I don’t believe. Probably 4 years / 60 mill $. Mitchell for say 12 per season would be a jackpot for me.

You have to assume he will at least get the MLE from a capped team at $9.8m per year.

So, this two years for 15m is devoid of any basis in reality.

2 years for 20m is the starting bid.

I think you lock up the option year and give him an extension this offseason after using any cap space. He can certainly play for 2mm and be a UFA, but why wouldn't he take an extension?

I am closer to 4 years for 60m after locking in his 2m in for next year. That's 5 more years for 62mm total. Seems like a no brainer on both sides to lock that up.

Nalod @ 3/15/2021 12:39 PM
Rudy Gorbert is far more accomplished but gets paid 27.7mil.
Steve Adams gets 28mm.
Not saying Mitch is there. But 18-22 is a range that might be reality. doe that mean we pay him? Trade him? Test his value?
Where does scouts think he projects to in the next few. Years?

Steven Adams got extended so that NOP didn't trade for a guy that left after 1 season. This year he makes $28M but the next 2 are $17M and $18M.

Feel like Clint Capella is more the top line where Mitch would end up. Starting around $15M and going 4 years.

Mitchell's value isn't getting any higher, just from production/ salary standpoint. I don't think trading him is out of the question, but the teams that would want are likely the teams with least to give. I think a Christian Wood type contract at around $12-13M is realistic.

Doesn’t matter if we sign another all star before we extend him. We can go over the cap if he is a restricted free agent.

This is why the timing of who we sign is very important as far as the cap goes.

We may want to pick up our long term pg sooner to be able to go over the cap next year etc

The main point is

We need to be able to sign a (pg and a all star before we go over the cap)

If we don’t sign a second all star caliber player to pair with Randle and Barret we are going nowhere.

We can go way over the cap once we have our all star and extend guys we have their bird rights

Next year we can pick up a guy like burks or bulllock etc for 1 year deals or rental wing

But we have to get a pg first and his bird rights. (Unless you don’t value us having a good starting pg)

We don’t need a 30 year old pg

We need a guy under 27

ESOMKnicks @ 3/15/2021 1:50 PM
I thought we would have $56m under the cap this coming summer if we are to renounce all our FAs. Enough to sign Kawhi for about $40m after he declines his player option with the Clips. Then sign some aging PG like Conley and Lowry for a discounted price for a couple of years to let them chase their last championship window while nurturing IQ to take over afterwards. Resign Mitch Rob once above the cap. And a backup center from the scrap heap to some exception-type deal.

Yea that’s a possibility if those players are on board.

We have the cap space and draft picks to go any direction the front office sees fit.

He would have a cap hold as an RFA that would limit our funds in Free Agency.

I understand what your saying but as long as we can clear 35m for next year it’s fine. We could cover his price up to 20m and still have 35m for big fish.

I may be seeing this wrong but this is what I think I know?

We can clear

Noah 6.2m

Not extend Knox after next year 5.2m

Cut Derrick rose down from 7.7m if he still wishes to be on the team

We also have 8m for 3 draft picks

But you may know sonething I don’t? (Sincerely)

Doesn’t matter if we sign another all star before we extend him. We can go over the cap if he is a restricted free agent.

This is why the timing of who we sign is very important as far as the cap goes.

It’s just a strategy difference.

You want to use RFA as a means of control to remove risk that he will sign elsewhere.

I think accepting his 2m option is a no brainer and that with his bird rights, the Knicks can extend him and go over the cap after using up all of their cap space - relying purely on economics to ensure the extension occurs. Big men should sign extensions when presented the opportunity.

I like Mitch a lot. But he isn’t irreplaceable. We’d be taking the risk that he chooses not to sign the extension. That said, the number of teams with cap space the next couple years aren’t that many, so it’s possible he end up signing in NY anyway or the Knicks end up with assets in a sign and trade (traded player exception, for example).

15m a season tops

Are you guys nuts, capela was a proven double double machine on a winning roster, and he was a 1st round pick.

Mitch is not a stretch big (or at least hasn't shown it in a real game) which is what most teams prefer, he's not a relentless rebounder, he's not leading the league in blocks, or even in the top 5, he can't play multiple positions, and centers are not a marquee position anymore, he has started 53 of a possible 154 games played, so why on earth would anyone pay him double digits per season .

70% of a players salary is based on what they have proven, 30% on POTENTIAL, which is what you guys are basing it on.

He is right around the NOEL price range, and that's being generous

You literally made that up and have zero basis for it.
