Phil Jackson dishes blame around for his Knicks failureMarch 25, 2021 | 11:43pm
Jackson said he was grateful when June 28, 2017, arrived, the day Dolan fired him with around $24 million remaining on his five-year contract.
The Zen Master — introduced to run the Knicks on March 28, 2014 — also said the feud with Anthony was the reason Dolan decided to let him go, adding that he was upset with what he believed was unfair treatment by an anti-Knicks media.
“[The media] was decidedly against the organization, and they were looking for whatever they can do to throw aspersions,” said Jackson, who also compared his press treatment to the type President Donald Trump received during his time in office. “I kind of understand Trump had to live with probably for his first 3 ½ years in office with the media.”

Jackson said he regretted not being able to turn around the Knicks, but also took a swipe at the fanbase.
“It felt like a major disappointment to have to go through that and not being able to turn that thing around because it’s a heartbeat of New York,” he said. “It’s a big part of what they like — their basketball team. There are long devoted Knick fans and I appreciate their desire, but I think they get in the way of the team a lot of times.”

I agree with him, irate/unfair/overly critical fans clearly have an impact on players and help create a toxic atmosphere for some players who struggle with that kind of pressure or scrutiny.

I've been saying this for years. The media and the fans play off each other and place unnecessary pressure in a toxic environment where only the great players can succeed. And sometimes even good players look worse when they cone here. Tough place to play...if your not mentally tough and confident....aka RJ Barrett
Broadway barret
Randle is also. Took the heat and got better.
Looks like iq is also
3 players whose talent supersede the toxic environment 😂
But I have to hand it first to Thibs. I didn't think he would make the impact he has. Granted, I'm still worried about him burning out players. But I was wrong. And he and Rose have turned the franchise around like many expected Phil to, but he was not up to the task. He should just admit such. He's one of the greatest coaches of all time, and one of the last Knick players to win a championship.
Phil killed the vibes around MSG because of the TRIANGLE and his TRIANGLE cult followers. He took a 54 win team and turned them into a 17 win team in less than 12 months...
Trading JR and shumpert (to a championship team)for ham sandwiches and kool aid.
Trying to coach from his office was his downfall

No he took a 37 win team whose window had clearly closed and tried to rebuild and drafted KP. When it became obvious KP was too mentally and physically fragile he tried to trade him for a boatload of assets that like Dearon Fox and Jaylon Brown and got vetoed by Dolan
If one hates on Phil your gonna jump on this as Gustav did and take offense. I come off as being apologetic for him but really to me he is a fascinating study. Most great ones are arrogant. Auerbach, Belecheck, Pop, Etc.....
Phil did a shit job. He tells you that. A man has pride and an audience that wants to hear him. You may not like his answers or agree with all of it. Some of it is perspective and subjective. Some of it is plainly true. As for Melo let’s not forget those two know all that has been said behind doors. Publicly melo said many things and did not act accordingly. I’m sure he has his side too. To be fair Melo has had a great career, sure fire hof first ballet and a “good guy”. Based on the optics of a career that does not have deep finals experience it’s fair to say he lacked support, great coaching, luck, and some of it does fall on him and his personality.
Some of you don’t want to hear that and certainly not from Phil. Perhaps Phil gets to speak because he is the coaching GOAT. Failed execs don’t get this platform. Nobody wants to do a interview with Layden on his Knick years. Larry is far mor interesting talking about his success, not his year of hell here. Was Koby Karl’s interview just about Knicks? If so, I want to hear it. If not, then I also want the full context of his comments. Important was he says Dolan did him favor. He admits to not having done a good job. I look forward to Melos book when he retires and retrospective as an older more seasoned person.
Of course. He picked triangle players and then hired the runner up for worst Knicks coach in the solar system in Derek Fisher. We're building for the future. We're winning now. We're making the playoffs. We're rebuilding with the right parts.
Actually, we're taking naps.
He used the media to alienate the ONLY TWO PLAYERS ON THE TEAM WORTH MORE THAN A CUP OF SHINOLA. He blames the media while using the media to destroy the team. That's Zen coherence for you, boys and girls.
He got himself fired, sent a foot selfie and took his smug dopey self back to Montana. Everyone kneel and kiss the rings.
If he was so disappointed, so filled with regret, why didn't he leave the 24 million on the table before ambling off into the sunset? That would have been at least a nice gesture to sort of mitigate the Noah contract.

Never ever let up on defending Melo!

+1K
Ive never heard an exec give himself a pass, while blaming the fans, and the media. You nailed it jrod.
Trump and Jackson were mean tweeting, when they should have been doing their respective jobs.
Fisher was still a player, with no coaching experience at any level, when he was hired.
Which made those cross country booty calls all the more disappointing. Seems like everyone was too busy having fun somewhere else to do their job.

While I agree that NY is a tough place to play, I find it weak that a guy with such a self pontificating illustrious past is using it as an excuse? Not to mention he fails to recognize that NY has had many great teams over the years that have done quite well. Ie. Yankees, Giants, Nets, the 90s Knicks and oh yeah Woodson"s team with Melo just before Phil decided to blow things up. And is he saying NY is the only tough place to play? Sure he has been to a Philly game? Boston? This is some weak stuff for a guy that led teams to a ring and proclaims the importance of mental toughness. Did he also whine about when opposing teams got a little to loud? I just think this is one of many excuses Phil needs because his ego can't take accepting the fact he shit the bed. No matter what excuse people come up with the fact remains, Phil was a failure. He came in and sold Dolan on a dream. Took $60M in a little over 2 years. He was not willing to do the work. His arrogance only helped him make bad decisions. All you have to do is look at what Thibs and Rose have done in a short span and you can see what happens when you hire competent guys that have an intelligent plan and most of all are willing to do the work. Phil came here believing all the hype that he and others had created about himself. He though his aura wood bring a chip. The excuses people make are hilarious.
As mentioned on another thrrad. Phil was probably our biggest "Starphuck"! He did nothing for this franchise. He is and will always be yet another Dolan mistake in Knicks history. Those apologizing for his failure were either hopeful Phil dreamers or just cannot recognize a dumpster fire when they see or smell it. Not saying you are in this group but it seems like those are the ones defending him the most.

As an exec he was unproven but very confident in his moves.

I agree. Phil did a shit job. The end.
Btw, Phil out there placing blame says all that can be said about a man. We excused it when he was here as trying to motivate players in Zen like fashion. We now see it was just an arrogant old man who is showing you what he is truly made of.
Having said that, it was a terrible fit obviously, he did the job at half speed, and his attitude has brought all this upon himself. He should not be throwing blame around.
